FALL 2009 13U TEAM WINS 1ST TOURNAMENT !!
After 2 rain-outs in previous weekends, the new 13U Texas Hurricanes team was finally able to play in its' first ever live games this past weekend (9/26/09) in a Cleburne tournament. In pool play, the team went 2-0-1 with one of the games a run rule. That seeded them 1st, and then in bracket play they went 2-0 with a 10-0 win and a 8-3 championship win. (This is the first time a Canes first season team has won its' first tournament.)
Speaking of firsts, Cody Farhat hit his first over-the-fence home run in the championship game. Everyone came through with big hits and big defensive plays, and they made only a few defensive mistakes considering this was a "rookie" team in its' very first tournament.
This 1st place will only be the first of many trophies this team will bring home over the next 2 years. Congratulations!!
CONGRATULATIONS SPRING 2009 Hurricanes !!
Our 2009 Spring/Summer 13U team placed 7th out of 64 teams in the AAYBA World Series in Flower Mound TX in early July. Led by "Little Nick" Ramos who joined the team especially for this tournament, our guys put together a SICK series of games to send home some highly ranked teams. This very respectable finish was made all the more satisfying considering that we didn't even have this team put together as late as early February of this year. We are all VERY PROUD of the EFFORT and HEART demonstrated in 7 days of 103 degree heat.
The roster included:
Cody Farhat Aidan Abueva David Laster Jacob Patterson
David Coker Peyton Johnson Jordan Reynolds Jake Hulsey
Nick Pena Chase Broeske Nick Ramos
HURRICANES HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STARS!
The Texas Hurricanes 14U team that played in the Elite 24 in Orlando (August 2006) has made an almost CLEAN SWEEP in the local high school All-District rosters. Of the 13 players on that Orlando roster, 9 have been named FIRST TEAM ALL-District in the Spring 2009 season and one was SECOND TEAM ALL-District (2 did not play high school baseball this season and 1 was not named to an all star team.)
There are 8 high school juniors and only 2 seniors in this group of Canes All-Stars. They are:
Victor Fuentes - Dallas Baptist (Sr.) 1st Team - has been offered at least 2 college baseball scholarships.
Jamodrick Magruder - Lubbock (Sr.) 1st team - May be drafted in the upcoming Major League draft - otherwise will go to Texas Tech to play ball.
Travis Ballew - Rockwall (Jr.) 1st team
Travis Brewster - Mesquite Horn (Jr.) 1st team
Christian Cline - Richardson High (Jr.) 1st team
Nic Watkins - Mineola (Jr.) 1st team
Jake Sutton - Mesquite Poteet (Jr.) 1st team
Nick Bell - Plano East (Jr.) 1st team
Connor Zmolik - Plano East (Jr.) 2nd team
Brandon Mayes - Wylie (Jr.) 1st team
WOW! We knew they were special back when they played for us, but they are even better NOW! These young mens' successes and other ex-Canes like them are what motivates the Texas Hurricanes coaching staff to continue with new young players and new Canes teams year after year. Congratulations and continued success!!!
STEVEN NIEDWIECKI'S TEAM WINS NJCAA WORLD SERIES !
Steven Niedwiecki is a Texas Hurricane (2003-2004) who is now playing for Howard Junior College (Big Spring TX), a team that has just won the NJCAA World Series. They did lose ONE game in the play-offs (their ONLY loss for the entire season). The Hawks were ranked #1 all season in the NJCAA polls. He will be one of the returning players to defend the title next year.
Scott Wingo Named TEAM MVP
Scott Wingo, Texas Hurricanes (2001-2002) was recently named the team MVP for UT-Pan AM for the 2009 baseball season. Scott is a Junior pitcher with a 92-mph fastball and an assortment of off-speed pitches. We are all looking forward to a great 2010 season for Scott and then a strong showing in the MBL draft next year.

The CANES are an independent baseball "organization" that has been competing at the highest level since 2000. The Hurricanes usually form teams at the 13u year and keep them for two years. The goal of the organization is to expose our young men to the highest level of baseball from around the state as well as the country, and we play in tournaments from California to Florida. Giving these kids a chance to compete against the best there is and exposing them to championship play gives these players an invaluable experience factor when it's time for high school and college ball.
We loosely call ourselves an "organization" since we are not your typical "organization". We do NOT have paid coaches and our goal is NOT to sign up as many players as possible to write us those team fees checks. We are NOT driven by the need to pay rent or salaries - we are driven to Provide the BEST baseball instructions for our players and the MOST Memorable big games that many of our guys have ever played in.
The Canes normally play anywhere from 18-20 tournaments a year, including Fall play, for a total of about 90 to 100 games. It is truly a year round commitment for only the most dedicated of players. The Canes pride themselves in their hard nose style of play and their never say die attitude. There may be "better" teams out there but none that play harder.
The Canes have had the same coaching staff for our whole existence and it is this stability that allows us to continue to compete and build dominant teams year in and year out. Nothing is harder than building new teams every two years that have the ability to compete with the best teams that have been together for a long time, but the coaching staff is very dedicated in doing just that. The challenge, as we see it, is teaching high caliber student athletes that technique, dedication, having a heart of a warrior, understanding of game situations, having respect for all participants as well as for the sport itself, prioritizing life's responsibilities -- ALL of these things and MORE make up a true athlete & teammate .

Chicago Bulls Theme
Saturday, August 9
The 13U Texas Hurricanes are just back from the Orlando ELITE 24 at the DISNEY WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS.
The competition was of course very intense and the very best teams in the US were there. The Canes played teams from Maryland, California, Atlanta, Houston, and even Dallas. We tied the Houston Banditos Black in pool play who, entering the tournament, was the #1 13U team in the US. We beat the Atlanta Monarchs, another very highly ranked team. We lost to the Hanover Heat, who finished as one of the top 4 teams in the tournament. And we beat the Texas Tornados, one of the top 5 teams in Texas, in an elimination game.
All of that allowed us to rank as one of the top 12, but then we faltered with a 5-1 loss to a strong All-American Baseball Academy team from California.
All in all, another unforgettable experience for all of our players, parents, and coaches. Now it's time to re-group and work towards another run at this same tournament next year.
Sunday, July 13
Over the week of July 6th through July 12th, the 13U Texas Hurricanes claimed the Championship in the Flower Mound TX AAYBA Platinum Division World Series with a perfect 7-0 record. In the first 4 games, the Canes scored a total of 53 runs and gave up 1 run. That was good enough for 2nd seed out of 48 total 13U teams.
The 5th game against the Garland Cubs was a real fight in which the Canes had to come back in the bottom of the 6th inning from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-4 lead which was the final score.
The semi-final game was against the Texas Tornados who always plays tough against the Canes. This time the Canes pitching and hitting proved too strong and a 7-1 win was the result. That propelled the Canes into the THIRD AAYBA Platinum Division championship game out of the last 3 times we played in this event. The first 2 times the Canes had to settle for 2nd place trophies.
This time the title game was against the North Texas Thunder, the #1 seed in the tournament. That meant that the Canes were the visitor for the first time (Thunder was seeded 1 and Canes were 2). Well, the Canes delivered a message that they were there to win with a 3-run 1st inning. BUT, the Thunder responded with 2 runs of their own and the game was close until the late innings when the Canes rallied again and made the score 7-3.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Thunder fought back to 7-6 before the last out was finally made. The World Series Champ - Texas Hurricanes.
Texas Hurricanes Won-Loss record in 2008: 50-16-2.
Earlier this Spring, the Canes won the "Luck of the Irish" tournament at Mesquite's BBI and also took the championship of the 14U American Super Series qualifier at Craig Ranch.
More recently, in just the past 6 weeks, the Texas Hurricanes have;
* Placed second in the Kansas City Memorial Day USSSA SUPER NIT Elite 24 qualifier, which was billed as the largest youth tournament ever played ( a total of over 300 teams ranging in age from 9 through 13). The Canes placed 2nd to the Thunder in that tournament, so there was revenge factor in the AAYBA championship win.
* Won the championship of the Dallas USSSA SUPER NIT qualifier with a win over the Ark-La-Tex Tornados (who pay all expenses for players to fly in from all over the Southwest region to play in tournaments).
* Won the AAYBA World Series against 47 other 13U teams.
* Won the Garland TX 13-14 regular season league title with an undefeated record of 14-0.
Now we begin to prepare for the ELITE 24 which will begin in early August. The state of Texas will be sending seven (7) total teams to the Elite 24 and 4 from North Texas. 13U Baseball in North Texas is as good or better than ANY OTHER REGION IN THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES.

AMAZING !!!!!
OUTSTANDING !!!!!!!!
UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!
TEXAS 13U USSSA FALL STATE CHAMPS
"The Streak" - as it will be referred to for years to come - started at Mesquite BBI in September. Rain kept the teams off the field for much of the weekend, and we only got to play our 2 pool games. But we were 2-0 and the top seed, so when the bracket play was cancelled we were listed as the winner.
Then came the Lone Star Tournament in DeSoto, where we went 3-0-1 and took the championship with a last inning rally and an extra innings "California Rules" championship win.
Next was trip down the Interstate to League City where we played at the great Field of Dreams complex. Even though we had to wait for one rain delay after another, the fields were equipped with excellent drainage systems so we still got to complete the tournament. The Canes went 4-0 and again won in our last at-bat of the game. Small ball was the poison we used this time as we bunted the winning run in.
The Tara Sawyer tournament was next. It is the most popular and largest tournament of the Fall in the Dallas area. The Canes went 5-1 and beat the Young Guns very late Sunday night in a come-from-behind bottom-of-the-seventh two-out full-count bases loaded double by the "Little Man" Nick Ramos. FOUR tournament championships in a row and three last inning Championship game wins in a row !!!!! WOW !!!!
Now comes the State Tournaments.........
First, the Triple Crown Texas North Zone State Tournament at Bakersfield in Flower Mound. The Canes win 5 games in a row to take the top spot. And, for once, we didn't have to wait until the last inning to pull off another miracle win. We run-ruled the Waco Buzz/Lightning Black in 6 innings.
Second, the USSSA Texas North Zone State Tournament at BBI. Actually, we played all of our games except 1 at Holford Park in Garland. After going 3-1 at Holford, we had to scramble to get over to the Mesquite BBI field to play the championship game. We beat the McKinney Marshals in a run rule game and made it home at a relatively decent time that Sunday evening.
Third and finally, we went to Round Rock to play in the USSSA Texas State Championships. A few teams cancelled out, and we ended up playing a round robin type of tournament with the other teams. Once again, the Texas Hurricanes took the championship trophy with an 11-2 run rule decision.
So, that adds up to SEVEN tournament Championships in a row for the Fall of 2007 - "THE STREAK". We won every tournament we entered, and ALL included top-notch National/Major calibur teams such as the Tornados, the Bad Boys, the Thunder, the Young Guns, the Marshals, the Waco BLB, and others.
Including the World Series games we played in this past Summer plus all of our Fall games, the Texas Hurricanes record over the span between July 29 2007 through November 12 2007 is 32 WINS, 4 LOSSES, and 1 TIE (Against other quality National/Major teams).
