JASMINE SANMIGUEL (CELINA) AND JORDAN HARTSELL (POTEET) SOFTBALL PREVIEW FROM THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS
New Braunfels Canyon vs. Mesquite Poteet
2 p.m. Friday
New Braunfels Canyon (36-3): The state's top-ranked 4A team has won 18 games in a row to reach the state tournament for the first time. Sophomore pitcher Sara Mireles is 31-3. Canyon has 10 players hitting better than .300 and has averaged 9.6 runs per game in the playoffs.
Mesquite Poteet (35-9-1): The District 15-4A runner-up has beaten three district champions in a row, eliminating Waco Midway, Rockwall and Forney. In the playoffs, senior Bradie Baker is 6-0 with a 1.33 ERA in games in which a loss would have ended Poteet's season. Poteet, in the state tournament for the second time, has a team batting average of .366 and averaged 6.8 runs per game.
Hitters
Mesquite Poteet: Ten players are hitting better than .300, paced by Central Arkansas signee Lindsey Barsoum (.481) and Carly Taylor (.437). Barsoum has scored 51 runs, and she had a 30-game hitting streak that ended in the regional quarterfinals. Barsoum has a hit in all but two of her games this season. Reachelle Spieker leads the team with 40 RBIs, and Taylor has 34. Taylor and Jordan Hartsell have combined for 27 doubles.
Celina vs. Longview Spring Hill
8:30 a.m. Friday
Celina (36-5): Celina has won 19 of its last 20 games, outscoring the opposition, 177-24, in that span. Celina won the final two games of a best-of-3 series to beat nationally ranked Van – the state's top-ranked 3A team – in the regional finals. This is Celina's second trip to state. The first came in 2006, when pitcher Sarah McCloud led Celina to the 2A semifinals. McCloud helped Georgia reach the Women's College World Series this year.
Celina: There is plenty of offense, as the team has scored at least 10 runs 15 times. Joey Cronin and Jasmine San Miguel have combined for 11 home runs, including four in the playoffs. Cronin leads the team with 52 RBIs. Cronin, San Miguel and pitcher Kylie Roos are all hitting better than .400.

BRITTNIE DEAN COMMITS TO HENDERSON STATE!
BRITTNIE DEAN A SENIOR AT FRISCO HIGH SCHOOL HAS DECIDED TO PLAY COLLEGE SOFTBALL FOR HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY. BRITTNIE WAS UTILITY PLAYER OF THE YEAR LAST YEAR IN DISTRICT 4A AND WILL BE JOINING THE REDDIES NEXT FALL. I WAS WONDERING WHAT A REDDIE IS AND HERE IS THE DESCRIPTION FROM THE WEBSITE....
By 1908, the newspaper writers were referring to the football team simply as “Reds.” A plausible explanation for the evolution to “Reddies” is that it fitted into pep songs and yells better than the shorter and more blunt “Reds.” In later years, well-meaning sports writers have called the teams “Redskins,” “Indians,” and “Big Red,” but the name “Reddies,” apparently originating from the red of the red and gray school colors, has stuck and the teams therefore remain without the traditional mascot.
The name Reddies is for not only athletes, but for the entire student body. No other color could better portray the honor, courage, and loyalty that represent Henderson State University. Hendersonians proudly wear the Red and are fittingly known as Reddies.
CONGRATULATIONS TO BRITTNIE AND THE DEAN FAMILY!
