Results from 11th Annual Memorial Tourism Shootout

Here are the title game results from the 11th Annual Memorial Tourism Shootout: 9-UNDER: West Ky Outlaws 15 - Murray Heat 7 11-UNDER: Southeast Rattlers 6 - Team Blaze 4 11-UNDER CONSOLATION: Paducah Panthers 12 - Jackson Purchase Redbirds 2 12-UNDER: Graves Co. Titans 8 - Dexter Titans 0 13-UNDER: Southern IN Bombers 6 - Barren Co. Trojans 1 Team Blaze posted the highest finish among the local teams participating in the 11th Annual USSSA Memorial Tourism Shootout youth baseball tournament, held in Murray over the holiday weekend. The Blaze finished second in a crowded and talented 11-under division, falling 6-4 to the undefeated and higher-classed Southeast (Mo.) Rattlers in the finale of that nine-team division. The championship loss came on the heels of the most exciting game of the weekend, when Team Blaze and the Murray Bucs met for the first time in nearly two years, with the Blaze posting a 6-5 win. In the semi-final contest of local clubs, the Bucs struck for three runs early and the Blaze responded to tie the game in the second inning. Team Blaze moved ahead 5-3 and then 6-3 before the Bucs mounted a rally that fell just short in the sixth (last) inning. The game ended on an excellent defensive play – a shoestring catch of a liner to the outfield - with runners at second and third. The Jackson Purchase Redbirds advanced to the consolation championship in the 11-under division before falling 12-2 to the Paducah Panthers. The 9- and 10-year-olds combined to play a round-robin format and both the 10u Murray Bucs and the 9u Murray Heat enjoyed success over the weekend. The Bucs wound up 3-1 in the tourney and gained some valuable momentum heading into next weekend’s play. The Heat battled the West Ky. Outlaws to a 7-7 tie through four innings before the final frame proved their undoing in a 15-7 championship loss. The Murray Jaguars had a tough tournament, failing to make the championship game in the 12-under division. The Jags won their last two tournaments, but failed to reach the title contest this weekend with a 1-3 record. The Graves Co. Titans downed the Dexter (Mo.) Titans 8-0 for that division’s championship. A balanced division of 13-under teams included the West Ky. Hurricanes, a team with several local players. The Canes qualified for Sunday’s semifinal action with a 13-4 win over the West Ky. Tribe on Friday night. The Canes lost a 5-4 decision to the Bolton (Tenn.) Wildcats and also fell to the Southern Ind. Bombers, the eventual 13u champs, in pool play on Saturday night. Sunday’s semifinal action included a Canes-Bomber semifinal rematch that went 8-3 in favor of the Bombers. The Bombers topped the Barren Co. (Ky.) Trojans 8-1 to take the overall title. The next event on the local tournament trail is the 9th Annual USSSA West Ky. Invitational slated for June 8-10 in Murray. The tourney is a “double points” event for USSSA sanctions and is expected to draw a big field of teams from throughout the four-state region.
