Spring Fling Results Thrill Moms and Others

The Murray Jaguars posted the top performance among local clubs in the 2nd Annual USSSA Spring Fling youth baseball tournament held over the weekend in Benton and Murray. The Jaguars defended their 12-under division title with a 9-6 tally over the Southeast Missouri Cobras.
The Spring Fling event was originally scheduled for Benton’s Mike Miller Park only, but an abundance of teams pushed some overflow games in the 9- and 11-under divisions to Murray City Park fields on Saturday and Sunday.
The key Spring Fling win for the Jags was the Sunday 9-8 comeback over The Diamonds that featured a rally from 8-1 down entering the next to last inning. The Spring Fling win was a repeat championship for coach Tim Greer’s team, which also took home the hardware in the 2006 Spring Fling.
Murray teams also enjoyed weekend success in the crowded 11-under division. Team Blaze won the silver bracket title with an exciting 7-5 win over the Tenn. Terror. The Blaze went 4-1 on the weekend and allowed the team mothers to coach the club in its opening game as an unusual Mother’s Day present. The Jackson Purchase Redbirds rebounded from disappointing pool play efforts to take home the championship in the bronze bracket with a 13-11 win over the Paducah Panthers. The Redbirds stopped another new Murray team, the Murray Razors with an 18-3 tally in the bronze semifinal.
The 11-under overall championship (gold division) went to the Anna-Jonesboro Bombers as they posted a 5-0 record and topped the West Ky. Titans 4-1 in the title contest. It was the second local tournament title of the season for the Bombers, which also won the Early Bird Classic here in March.
The Murray Heat had a productive weekend in the 9-under division with a 2-2 overall record. The Heat cooled off in the semifinals via a 17-7 setback to the Dirt Devils. The 9-under trophies eventually went to the West Ky. Warriors in a thrilling 8-7 last comeback win against the Dirt Devils. The Warriors entered the last frame down 7-4 before rallying for their second tournament title of the season.
Other Spring Fling results included the Bootheel (Mo.) Blaze with a 10-1 win over the West Ky. Outlaws to capture the 7-under championship. The tables were turned in the 8-under division as the West Ky. Outlaws topped the Blaze 17-9 for the crown. The 10-under honors went to the Ky. Lake Legends when they stopped the Heath Pirates 8-6.
The next area event on the travel team calendar is the 10th Annual USSSA Memorial Tourism Classic on May 25-27. That tournament was originally scheduled in Mayfield until field lighting problems caused the event to be moved to Murray for the holiday weekend.
