How to Prevent Heat Related Injuries (click here) ******* BE PREPARED ********
Please be prepared before comming to practices in the summer. Have all of your equipment and clothes layed out and ready to leave. This way you will not forget your water. Take a water bottle larger than your child can drink not a 9oz. bottled water. Bring at least a half gallon cooler that closes tight and easy(Kids will knock them over and your player no longer has any water when he comes back during a break.

Also Hydrate your player throughout the day, not an hour before you leave for practice. Dont let them play outside all day in the sun and send them off to practice, they will not respond well and will feel negative toward practice and themselves because they are not at there fullest potential.

How Should My Player / Son Act In Full Gear During Practice/Game ? ???????
Remember that this is the first or second year that most all of your sons have ever played a sport with this much equipment on. You probably have about 5 to 7 Lbs. of equipment on during practice or a game. They will feel weighted down and stiff, and have a hard time bieng as mobile than what they are use to. They will get use to it; however you the parents have to be supportive during this transition.
Common Problems:
My head hurts or I have a head ache
I can't get my helmet on and off
I gag with my mouth piece in and can't breath
I'm to hot and can't move
These pads don't fit right
I can't catch the ball
I can't run fast anymore
My feet hurt
I'm sore

Remember everyone else is in the same situation your player is in.

FYI Questions About Equipment For Practice
*   Helmet with chin strap (Optional; you can go to Dicks and purchase ($9.99) a paded chin strap that protects your players chin more and fits better than the old ones.

* Tee shirt (You can make a cut off shirt how: Have Parents Cut an old
under      tee shirt on the seam of the shoulders, put shirt on child find
shoulder his diaphram in middle of chest and take 2 fingers down and mark
pads    it. Take shirt off lay shirt on flat surface cut even across
left to right. Make sure you dont cut to much or you can get
rashes under the arm pit or chest area.

*   Cleates: (Have to be molded rubber on bottom) Just my opinion but dont go out and spend $50 on cleats. You could even use Baseball or Soccer cleat as long as they have about 1/2 or more of the posts left on the ball of foot to toe. At this age they are not going to benifit from the upper end designed shoes they dont have the strength nor the speed to benifit from them. stay around $20 -$35. Make sure they run around in them in the back yard break them in a little before you start a full week of practice.

* Socks:    Make sure that your player is wearing socks the go beyond the rim of the cleat. The sock is used as a barrier to protect your foot from getting blisters.

* Mouth Pieces: Tomahawks usally supplied mouth pieces; however these are usally adult size. You can get a youth mouth piece from a sporting good store for about $5. Make sure it has a string or some way to mount to facemask because the kids will lose the mouth pieces that have no string. Mold it ahead of time and have your player put it in his mouth while playing with there equipment this helps them deal with the discomfort.

* Water Bottle Bring a water bottle no smaller that 1 liter. DO NOT BRING BOTTLED WATER THEY ARE TO SMALL. Make sure it seals well when they are done drinking otherwise it will spill out when everyone knocks it over. PUT YOUR PLAYERS NAME ON THE BOTTLE.

* Athletic supporters / CUPS It is reccomended; however this is a personal decision between you and your player. It is uncomfortable, but if it something you believe in this is the age to inforce it. If you wait they prob. will never get into the habit.

Fitting Your Players Mouthpiece
******* Optional; However if you buy a mouthguard make sure it is a youth *******
make sure you get one that has a strap that attaches to face mask

For most Mouthguards:
1) Bring water to a boil. Remove water from heat source. Immediately place mouthguard in water for 10 to 12 sec.
2) Lick your lips before placing mouthguard in your mouth. Carefully place mouthguard tight around all upper teeth. Bite down firmly and push tongue against roof of mouth. With a strong sucking your gums.
3) Rinse under cold water for 30 seconds to set.
4) If you do not get a proper fit the first time, repeat 1-3.
5) To remove excess material that causes discmfort, you can trim your mouthguard with a sharp scissors.

Prevention of injuries & equipment issues
Prvent Injuries:
* Never put your head down while tackling
* Never hit or tackle another player unless instructed game/practice
* Never throw or hit another player with objects in game/practice
* Always hydrate yourself before practicing or playing a game 3/4HRs before

Equipment & Tips :
* Always wear socks that are higher than the cleat that your player is wearing to prevent rubbing and blisters.

* If you are having problems getting your players helmet on and off try:
       1) Hair cut (shorter)
       2) Wetting his head down before and during practice
       3) Using vasiline on his ears and key areas (small amount)
Also make sure the you get a good chin strap and it is pulled evenly on both sides

* Shoulder Pads STAY COOLER; take a couple of old shirts and put one on your player put the shoulder pads on and mark 1-1/2" under the shoulder pad (chest). Take the shirt off and cut the marking around the chest area evenly. Also cut the sleeves off on the outside stitching of shoulder so the deltoid muscle (shoulder) is showing. Do not cut off collar of T-shirt because it will rub on his neck.

* GIRDLE; Make sure your hip pads are in there designed pockets inside the girdle. The girdle is designed to fit snug like a pair of spandex shorts. The 2 hip pads and 1 butt pad will fit tight inside the pocket and may not fit that will because they are 2 different brands.

* PRACTICE & GAME PANTS; Are to fit snug if possible so the thigh and knee pads don't move all around. The pants have pockets for 2 thigh pads and 2 knee pads and the curved portion of the pad forms around your players leg. Your player may be inbetween sizes this year and possibly next season and the pants may not fit ideal.

* Putting The Belt Through The Pants; The easiest way I found was to take a pencil or pen and tape the belt to it. This will allow you to feed the pencil/pen through easy and then pull belt the rest of the way out.
