Xplosion Eclipsed Again on a PK
Team Xplosion faced off against the Eclipse Select East White 91-92 for the second time this season.  The Xplosion opened their Fall 2007 season with a 2-1 loss to the Eclipse and was looking forward to a payback game.  The match was hard fought throughout and looked headed for a scoreless tie until the referee whistled the Xplosion for a foul in the box with only 10 minutes to play.  The Eclipse made the most of this gift and scored off the Keepers hands for the only score of the match.  With the loss, Team Xplosion finished the season with a record of 5-3-2, but won't know exactly where they finished until all of the division scores are posted.

Sunday, November 4
Xplosion Tops Pride
Team Xplosion played yet another tough, close match, this time against the Windy City Pride and prevailed in the end by a 2-1 margin.  Lauren Blyth scored the only goal of the 1st half, splitting the defense and beating the Pride Keeper following a nice pass from Liz Wrobel.  The Pride wasted no time at all tying up the match at 1-1 early in the 2nd half, after which both teams settled in to see who would break first.  After about 25 minutes, Natalie Hazim nearly scored after launching a long, high shot into the wind from deep in the right corner.  The ball barely went cleared the top of the net.  About five minutes later, Natalie launched an identical shot from nearly the same position, and this one found the back of the net for the game winner.

BIG Tie
Big Tie

Team Xplosion took on their cross-town rivals, the Tinley Park Twisters in a battle for U-16 bragging rights for the Fall 2007 season.  The Twisters are a true U-16 team and the Xplosion had never played them outdoors before today's game, although they have matched up multiple times during indoor seasons past.  The matches were usually close, but the Twisters always seemed to have that extra edge to pull it out at the end.

At the IUSC Candlelight Bowl on Saturday night, Rick Wrobel was rarin' to go and quoted as saying "I've been looking forward to this match all season", and indeed the Xplosion had been looking forward to this game and considered it to be a measuring stick of their development to date.  What made it even more interesting was that the Twisters were dominating the division and came into the match with a perfect 7-0 record, having outscored their opponents by a 26-2 margin.  Additionally, Team Xplosion was missing several key players due to injury or other high school commitments.

Both teams battled hard for the full 80 minutes and when the final whistle blew, Team Xplosion had achieved a well earned scoreless tie with the Twisters.  The Xplosion easily held their own throughout the match, and at times carried the play.  Both teams had a goal reversed on offsides calls, and fortunately for the Xplosion, the Twisters "offsides goal" occurred during the final minute of the match.  The Xplosion had also dodged another bullet with only about five minutes to play when the Twisters managed to hit both goal posts and the cross bar in rapid succession without scoring.

So, in the end, both teams will have to share bragging rights for the season.  Although a win would have been "way more enjoyable", at least Team Xplosion can say that they were able to spoil the Twisters attempt at a perfect season and improve their own chances for a top three finish.

Sunday, October 21
Windy Victory

Team Xplosion traveled to Bourbonais, IL to face off against Girls United Soccer on a warm but very windy late October Sunday.   The Xplosion rode a strong 1st half wind at their backs to a 4-0 halftime lead, which they hoped would be enough to hold off the expected 2nd half charge from Girls United with the wind change.

During the 2nd half, our girls did well to consistently work the ball out of their end and switch the attack.  Despite giving up three goals to Girls United, incredibly the Xplosion matched those goals with three of their own against the wind!  When the final whistle blew, Team Xplosion had defeated Girls United quite handily by a score of 7-3.

Lauren Blyth scored a three goal hat-trick for the Xplosion, with other goals coming from Sam Rodriguez, Iris Casler, Natalie Hazim, and Liz Wrobel.  Ashley Noreen had two assists, with other assists going to Sam, Natalie, Jamie Thauer, and Liz Kopecky.

Sunday, October 14
Xplosion Lose 1-0 Heartbreaker to Galaxy
Team Xplosion played one of their strongest matches of the season against the Galaxy 91-92 Black for 80 minutes, but fell 1-0 to the Galaxy on a fluke 2nd half goal.  The Xplosion played with tremendous energy and anticipation and had several strong scoring chances, but couldn't dent the Galaxy net.  Meanwhile, the Galaxy had fewer scoring opportunities, but managed to score their only goal midway through the 2nd half.  After Michelle dove and gathered in a Galaxy shot, the ball bled out of her hands momentarily and was pounced on by a Galaxy forward who pushed it into the net for the game's only score.

Sunday, October 14
Xplosion Top SE Celtic By Forfeit

SE Celtic showed up ready to play, but unfortunately their coach did not, and so the Celtic were forced to forfeit their match against Team Xplosion.  Officially, the score was recorded as a 1-0 victory for the Xplosion.  For statistical purposes the goal was awarded to Becca Evans.  Our girls played a short scrimmage against the Celtic, and Becca scored one of the team's goals and had the most spectacular celebration, thus she gets the credit for the forfeit goal.  The scrimmage also marked the debut of Iris Casler as a Keeper.  Iris played the final 10 minutes in goal and handled her first shot flawlessly and received a standing ovation for her effort.

Sunday, October 7
Xplosion Battles Shock to 1-1 Tie

Team Xplosion battled the Orland Shock to 1-1 tie in a close match that was just a "break" away from going either way.  In their three previous matches, the Shock had only given up three goals and scored only four themselves, so the Xplosion knew this would likely be a low scoring game with a premium placed on each goal either scored or allowed.

The Shock carried the play early with several shots on Keeper Becca Evans which she handled easily.  However, Team Xplosion broke through on the scoreboard first when Ashley Noreen directed a long pass up the middle to Lauren Blyth who dribbled around the Shock Keeper for an easy goal.  The Shock tied it up later in the half following a scramble in front of the Xplosion goal that the team couldn't clear.  The two teams were scoreless in the 2nd half as both toughened up their defenses knowing that the next goal scored would likely be the game winner.

Sunday, September 30
Best of the Midwest Tournament
Team Xplosion traveled to Hobart, IN over the weekend of September 29-30 to participate in the Kohl's Fall 2007 Best of the Midwest Tournament.  The Xplosion competed in the Girls U-16 Champions Division against quality teams from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri.  Although the team played hard, the competition was just too superior, as Team Xplosion lost twice on Saturday by scores of 5-0, and once on Sunday, 3-1.  The lone Xplosion goal was scored by Jamie Thauer with an assist from Liz Kopecki.

Sunday, September 23
Xplosion Eclipsed 2-1

Team Xplosion dropped their first match of the season, losing 2-1 to the Eclipse Elect East White 91-92.  The Eclipse had dominated their first two opponents, so the coaches knew the team was in for a tough game.  However, when all was said and done, the Xplosion hung in there well, and in fact, this was a game, the team could have either tied or won outright.

The Eclipse scored twice in the 1st half after breaking down our defense with long runs up the sideline followed by beautiful crossing passes that were converted into scores.  Team Xplosion had been "sleep walking" through the 1st half, but then woke up and played a much more spirited 2nd half.  Lauren Blyth finally broke through with a goal in the 30th minute on a nice assist from Sam Rodriguez.  The team fought hard over the last 10 minutes in an effort to tie the game, but couldn't net the equalizer.

Sunday, September 16
Xplosion Bombs from Long Range

Team Xplosion “Xploded” for six goals against the DG Road Runners Black and won the match going away by the score of 6-3.   The game was tied 2-2 at the half, with the Xplosion scoring the tying goal in the last minute of play.  DG scored early in the 2nd half to take a 3-2, but then the Xplosion took over and scored the last four goals to close out the game.   The six goals represented the most they have scored in a game in nearly two years when the team defeated the Lemont Raiders 9-1 on September 18, 2005.

Shannon Clark scored the two 1st half goals with assists going to Lauren Blyth and Liz Kopecky.  Shannon’s game tying goal came on a “bank shot” from a sharp angle.  Shannon’s drive deflected off the goal post, and then off the Keeper’s leg and into the goal.   Iris Casler also scored twice, both on 25 to 30 yard dead ball direct kicks that sailed high and hard over the Keeper’s head into the back of the net.  Ashley Noreen also scored from long range on a hihg, long floating shot that slipped just under the crossbar.

And last, but certainly not least, Lauren Blyth scored the team’s first ever outdoor season goal on a “header”!  Iris Casler launched yet another long direct kick into the goal box, and Lauren positioned perfectly in front of the Keeper lept high in the air, angled her head perfectly, and re-directed the ball past the Keeper.  Simply a thing of beauty.

Sunday, September 9
Xplosion Wins Opener

Team Xplosion opened their Fall 2007 season with 2-1 victory over the HSC Hawks U16 White.   This is the 11th consecutive season (spanning six years) together for many of the team’s players.   The Xplosion returned 12 of the 14 girls from last season’s roster, but did add two new players for the upcoming season:  Natalie Haizmi (#1) and Samantha “Sam” Rodriguez (#22).

Jamie Thauer scored the first goal of the season midway through the 1st half when she redirected a beautiful crossing pass from Shannon Clark.  The Hawks tied the match in the first minute of the 2nd half with a long, high shot over Keeper Jamie Thauer’s outstretched hands.  Team Xplosion missed on several excellent scoring opportunities until Lauren Blyth scored the game winner following a scramble in front of the Hawks goal with about 10 minutes remaining.   Once again, Shannon Clark earned an assist on the play.

Open Letter to Team Xplosion Parents and Players
I've been giving a great deal of thought to yesterday's Team Xplosion parents meeting. I had very little to say during the meeting as I thought Coach Gerry did an outstanding job of making all of the key points, while Sue Prokaski and Tina Thauer added the perfect exclamation points with their personal perspectives. Although I felt that everything was said that needed to be, there still appeared to be a great deal of uncertainty in most parents minds as to what the appropriate next steps should be.

It is around this uncertainty that I have been reflecting the most since yeterday. First, it is obviously important that parents and daughters talk together and decide if they even want to play Fall soccer. For those that do and haven't yet made up your minds to leave the team, I recommend that you have faith in Coach Gerry and his ability to provide the best opportunity for your daughters. Gerry and Sue Prokaski have given their all to Team Xplosion for the past five years to help make the team and its players the very best they could be and prepare them for high school. That is still their primary motivation. It is now time to show faith and loyalty in return. It is especially important that the leaders on this team make this committment early, as I believe that others will then gain confidence and make the same decision.

As Coach Gerry stated, Team Xplosion is Tinley Park's premier U14 Girls travel soccer team. It is a travesty that the team is not remaining intact and that other strong players from the area are not joining up with Team Xplosion to make them even better. However, the situation is what it is. I firmly believe that Team Xplosion can survive the loss of a few players, keep the core group together, and continue to thrive through one of the options provided by Coach Gerry or perhaps another option not yet even thought of. If truth be told, wouldn't the girls prefer to continue playing with their friends and teammates from the past five years? Let's keep our girls together and give Coach Gerry a chance to determine and provide the best situation for our team going forward.

That's just my opinion.

...Tom Slawik

"Trainwreck" Set for Release
Video Cover
"Trainwreck" was the title chosen for Team Xplosion's Fall 2006 Season Video DVD set for release shortly. This title is not meant to be an indictment of the team or our players in any way. Rather, it was simply intended as a humorous, "tongue in cheek", one word description of the results of our past season, where for a variety of reasons, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

Quite honestly, the Fall 2006 Season was one of those seasons that everyone would no doubt like to forget. However, Sam Evans, Doug/Rose Ann Blyth, and Ashley Noreen once again provided hundreds of great photos and Jim Choragwicki shot some exciting video that has all been packaged together with music and special effects to produce a set of presentations that I think everyone will enjoy.

Trainwreck...coming to a theater near you. Don't miss it!

Special thanks to them for their dedication and effort. Please contact Tom Slawik if you would like additional copies of this or previous DVD's.

Welcome to the Spring 2006 Season
Can you believe it's April already and that our first outdoor game of the Spring 2006 season is only one week away! Following a very successful championship season in the fall, our team has earned the right to move up and play in the more competitive IWSL B South Division. This will definitely be a challenge for our players, and we expect each match to be a close one. However, we are confident that our girls will rise to the challenge and elevate their game and effort accordingly.

Training and Practices

  • Our normal practice schedule will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30.
  • Our IUSC Club Camp will be held Monday (4/10) through Thursday (4/13)
  • Club foot skill training is also available on Mondays during the season at no additional charge.

Tournaments
Our team will participate in two tournaments this season. A third overnight tournament may be considered if there is sufficient interest.

  • May 20th - Small local tournament hosted by the Homer Hawks at Lemont HS.
  • Memorial Day Weekend - Prairie Soccer Tournament (Oswego)

Fees and Team Accounts
Spring season fees will be $275. The fee may be paid in full by April 1st, or in two installments of $175 by April 1st, and the balance of $100 by April 17th. Those with unused credit from the Super Bowl fundraiser should reduce their fees accordingly.

Remember...to call Coach Gerry on his home (429-7547) or cell (312-961-2495) phones if a player cannot participate in a practice or game.

Coach Gerry attended the IWSL Spring 2006 Season Seeding meeting today and it's now official. Team Xplosion will be competing in the IWSL B South Division for the upcoming season. Also moving up from the C South Division were the 2nd Place Plainfield Freedom. The B South Division includes 10 teams and many of our old rivals from season's past, including the Orland Park Celtics, Oak Park/River Forest, HSC Green, Naperville Lightning, and many more. The Spring 2006 season will definitely be a more challenging and competitive one for Team Xplosion than Fall 2005. However, Coach Gerry and Coach Tom both believe the girls will elevate their level of play and rise to the occasion. Buckle up - it should be an exciting season!

Team Xplosion "Photo Music Video DVD's"
Video Camera
"Get Your Shine On" is the title of Team Xplosion's Photo Music Video DVD for the Spring 2005 season. This production was just completed and copies will be given to the girls during the pre-season camp. Once again, Sam Evans "clicked his finger to the bone" especially during the parents vs. team game in which he took more than 200 pictures. Many of them are featured in a segment dedicated exclusively to that game. Doug Blyth was also busy shooting pictures last season and contributed several great shots to the production. The new DVD also includes some video clips shot by Jim Choragwicki for an added touch. We hope you enjoy re-living the past season though this special audio/video presentation.

Team Xplosion "Flagman of the Year" Contest
Alright Xplosion players and parents, it's time to make this website a little more interactive. Thus, we proudly present the Team Xplosion "Flagman of the Year" contest. Our two finalists for this prestigious award are Jim Choragwicki and Rick Wrobel, who were both "strutting their stuff" for the judges along the sidelines yesterday in our Fall season finale.

I have never witnessed such crisp and precise flagsmanship in all my years in soccer. Both Jim and Rick certainly raised the standard by which all future flagman will here-to-for be judged. Rick even added a new dimension to his performance in the freestyle portion of the competition with his patented "hip action". However, it will be up to the judges to determine whether that sort of display has any place in the up-to-now traditional sport of "flagging".

So vote with your mouse and let me know your selection for Xplosion "Flagman of the Year". Just send me an email (tgslawik@sbcglobal.net) and let me know your choice, as well as any "choice" comments you would like to make to support your decision. The winner of this award will have an opportunity to advance to the Illinois United SC club-wide competition, and may get a chance to represent the United States in the upcoming Olympic Games, where "flagging" will become a demonstration sport for the very first time.

So who's it gonna be, Flagman Jim or Flagman Rick?

    Indoor Soccer Session 1
    header
The Indoor Season (Session 1) is just around the corner, scheduled to begin in early November. Indoor soccer is a great way for our girls to stay in "soccer shape" and to continue developing and enhancing their skills for the next outdoor season in Spring 2003.

Coach Gerry has secured a slot for us at the new Homer Glen Sportsplex (Bell Road just north of 159th Street). Payments of $110.00 made payable to the Tinley Park Bobcats are due by Saturday October 19th. If we are able to pick up add'l players to increase our roster to twelve, credit will be provided on future fees.

    Happy Holidays!
    Christmas

    Dear Xplosion Players and Parents,

Thank you very much for your generous gift certificates to Gatto's. We will definitely be thinking of you all when we redeem and enjoy them. ( Maybe we'll even check and see if Gatto's is interested in sponsoring a certain "up and coming" U10 girls soccer team.)

We feel that the Xplosion made great strides during this past year, and will only continue to improve in the seasons ahead. We are both very proud of the progress the girls have made and enjoy the time we spend coaching them. Girls, thank you for your dedication and hard work. Parents, thank you for allowing your daughters to play and for making the time to run them all over the south and west suburbs, and for coming out to encourage and cheer them on, win or lose.

Best wishes to all for the holiday season, and a healthy and prosperous New Year in 2003.

    Sincerely,

    Coach Gerry and Coach Tom

    Welcome
    Welcome (Back) Victoria and Lauren!
Team Xplosion extends a warm welcome to Victoria Kappel who joins the team for Indoor Session 2. Victoria brings some valuable experience with her, having recently played for Team Copa (U12). After only a few games with the team, it is apparent that Victoria is a great addition, and fits right in with the rest of the girls.

The Xplosion would also like to welcome back #99, Lauren Mrozek for Indoor Session 2. Lauren was a key player for the Xplosion during its Fall 2002 season, and Indoor Session 1 just wasn't the same without her. We definitely missed her energy on game days and are very glad to have her back.

    Spring Is In the Air
The start of the Spring Outdoor Season is right around the corner, with the opening game scheduled for April 27th. I can hardly wait for the sunshine, warm temperatures, and green grass to get here. Click on the "Schedules Link" for a look at the complete spring schedule. Keep in mind though that there are still two games to be scheduled, and a few other games may need to be re-scheduled due to tournament conflicts.

Team Xplosion will again compete in the IWSL U10 D South Division against teams from Tinley Park, Orland Park, Palos, Darien, Naperville, and Oswego. The Summit team moved up one level to the "C" Division so the league should be well balanced and highly competitive. Our goal is to improve upon our Fall Season record of 4-4-2, and contend for the league title.

Practices will be starting up again shortly. Parents, thank you in advance for your efforts in helping to make this a successful season.

    Future Pros of America
    Moves2
Beginning this season, Team Xplosion and a number of the other Bobcat travel teams will begin receiving training and instruction from Future Pros of America (FP), currently the largest and most respected team training organization in the Chicago-land area. Now in their 10th year, the FP staff administers training programs at the level and pace that is appropriate for each team. This flexibility keeps teams working harder and smarter to advance to higher levels of play.

All of the FP instructors and staff are comprised of former or current professional players from over 15 different countries. All potential trainers must pass criminal background checks and are screened to ensure they will be effective coaches. During the Spring Season, we anticipate conducting two practices each week, with an FP instructor leading one of the two practices. Our FP trainer will also have an opportunity to observe our coaches and players at a few of our games and provide constructive feedback and instruction based on their observations.

We look forward to working with and receiving the benefits of our involvement with Future Pros of America. Individual and team skills should increase significantly as a result.

    New Team Xplosion Logo
A special thanks to our very own John Casler for creating a contempory, colorful, and high quality graphic design for the new Team Xplosion logo. The new design looks awesome, and we are exploring different applications including hats, patches, decals, etc., as well as maintaining a prominent presence on our website. John, you do great work. Thanks again for lending your talents to the cause.
