TEXAS TRI-COUNTY BABE RUTH 18U
2010 REGIONAL CHAMPS!
NEXT STOP, Babe Ruth WORLD SERIES !
Well, that was a terrific 2010! Now after hosting the Southwest Regional Tournament in 2011, Tri-County is set to host the World Series in 2012!!!
The Texas Tri-County 18U Babe Ruth All-Star Team is looking forward to a great season of baseball, as it focuses on working toward victory in the Southwest Regional Tournament in Eagle Pass, Texas. ...and now victory in the Babe Ruth WORLD SERIES!!!
Headquartered in Weimar, Texas, the Texas Tri-County Babe Ruth League began play in 1981. The League has divisions for players from ages 13 through 18. The Tri-County League features both regular league teams as well as All-Star teams for ages 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18U. Originally players came from Colorado, Fayette, and Lavaca Counties, but over the years the League has expanded to offer playing opportunities to young men from nearby locations as well. Tri-County 18U teams have appeared in the Babe Ruth World Series 6 times ( CORRECTION: 7 TIMES! ) ('82, '97, '01, '02, '03, '04, ...AND '10! ) and TC 16U teams in 2 World Series ('96, '00). The Tri-County 18U All-Star Team won the 2002 Babe Ruth World Series, held in Stamford, Connecticut.
Practice Friday at 6:30 in WEIMAR! (Finally! WE can use the Weimar baseball field!) In addition, we want to have a meeting with our team parents tonight in Weimar at the baseball field to discuss what we know about travel arrangements, hotel reservations, team issues, the flight schedule, etc. The meeting will start around 7:00PM.
We now know more about the travel schedule. The team will fly out of Houston on Tuesday in the later afternoon (I think it is 4 or 4:40PM) and will arrive in Columbus, Ohio after 10PM local time (9PM here). The team will be bused to Newark (about 30min away) and will be assigned to their host families. Apparently there is no banquet before any World Series games. We will begin play on Wednesday evening. The departure time is a welcome relief, since in the past most of the preparations had to be done the day before leaving, since the team often had to fly out before dawn.
!!! REGIONAL CHAMPIONS !!!
Wow! What a great run! That was a terrific tournament for all of us! Everyone did their job, and now we're going to Ohio.BABE RUTH WORLD SERIES LINKS:
The headquarters hotel is the Cherry Valley Lodge. It is a great place for hanging out for parents (and coaches!).
Leera Janecka (Trent Janecka's mom) is making the hotel reservations. Babe Ruth HQ wanted only 1 person to be in charge of getting rooms for "team followers". I am assuming that Babe Ruth blocks off a large number of rooms early in the year (8 Regions, with up to 18 players on a team, that would be a maximum of 144 sets of parents; throw in a few more for relatives, plus other Babe Ruth officials and umpires, and they probably take close to 175-200 rooms). At any rate, rooms are available. If you haven't gotten a room yet, please contact Mrs. Janecka. (call me at the number listed below if you don't have her number).
TRI-COUNTY WINS REGIONAL!!! (posted Thu., 1:40PM) Tri-County had to go to Game 2 in the Championship, but emerged with the Regional Championship. Mid-County won Game 1 by a score of 10-7. Tri-County then bounced back with a clutch 12-6 win in Game 2 to claim the Championship.
In Game 1, Ross Goebel, Brock Otto, and Joe Tallerine all saw time on the mound. Jacob Garlick smashed a 3-run homer that kept Tri-County in the game. Mid-County hit extremely well, and also benefitted from several lucky bounces and TC errors. Unfortunately, Tri-County couldn't keep up the MC scoring and fell 10-7.
In Game 2, TC sent Dallas Ponder to the mound. Tri-County's offense pounded 4 different Mid-County pitchers for 16 hits in 32 at bats. MC seemed to get most of the breaks in Game 1; TC seemed to get most of the breaks in Game 2. Tri-County wasted no time jumping on top in the bottom of the 1st when Kevin Daniels doubled to left, and scored on a Joe Tallerine hit. After a Ross Goebel sac bunt, Dallas Ponder smacked a towering homer run over the left field fence. The Garlick doubled and scored on Cole Mann's base hit to make it 4-0 TC. Mid-County's offense was hard to keep down, but TC kept answering. When Ponder began to tire in the 4th, Jason Zbranek entered the game and began to slam the door. Zbranek would go the rest of the way on the hill. The final score was 12-6 in favor of Tri-County! Dallas Ponder went 4-4 with a 2-run HR in the game, while Jacob Garlick was 3-4. Joe Tallerine went 2-3.
UPDATE (Mon., 11:45PM): Tri-County defeated Del Rio 8-4 in the second round. Dallas Ponder recorded the win, with relief help from Weston Wick, Clay Gaddy, and Jason Zbranek. Zbranek earned a save.
In Monday's Winners' Bracket Final, Tri-County defeated Eagle Pass. TC led 4-3 heading into the top of the 6th. Then Tri-County scored 6 runs to take a 10-3 lead. In the top of the 7th, Tri-County exploded for 8 more, and took an 18-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Eagle Pass scored once in the bottom of the inning to make the final 18-4. Trent Janecka pitched through 4 innings, before giving way to Jason Zbranek and Weston Wick. Trent Janecka hit a Grand Slam in the top of the seventh, Dallas Ponder went 4-5 at the plate, and Jacob Garlick hit a 2-run HR in the 6th.
Tri-County advances to the Championship Game where they will take on Mid-County at 10AM tomorrow morning (Tuesday). Tri-County will have to win one game to win the Championship while Mid-County would have to win two. Mid-County will likely start mid-to-upper 80's LHP Cody Laird, while Tri-County will probably counter with Ross Goebel.
UPDATE (Sat., 5:17PM): Tri-County opened the Regional with an 11-0 victory over South Arkansas in 5 innings. Ross Goebel pitched all five innings for TC, allowing only 2 singles. Joe Tallerine went 3-4 with 2 2B's while Dallas Ponder and Jonathan Stavinoha were both 2-3 (Ponder with a 2B off of the left field fence).
Tri-County's second game will be on Sunday, at 10AM, against Del Rio. Del Rio defeated Mississippi 3-2 in their opener. Other first round games on Friday had Eagle Pass defeating West Texas 3-2, and East Texas (Mid-County) beat North Arkansas 12-3. On Saturday morning, Eagle Pass knocked off Louisiana 7-2.
The Regional is here! This is what it is all about for us!
Now is the time to bear down...I've said it before, but we will NOT be able to out-talent our opponents at the Regional. But we can always outhustle and outscrap them!
(posted July 20): Good job everyone on winning the Houston 5A Baseball.com Tournament this past weekend. It is always nice to win any tournament, but I don't want to dwell too much on it. After all, our reason for entering the tournament was to prepare for the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional. We were able to accomplish much of what we wanted toward that end. Winning the tournament was the proverbial gravy. But we had and still have our sights set on something larger this weekend!
Briefly, there are some nice pictures taken by the professional protographer on the H5AB.com messageboard Q3 Tournament post. Our team photo, along with a great shot of Kevin Daniels running the bases, is up on the main H5AB.com website. Here is a link to a page with just the slideshow. If you stop the show and click forward, our first photo is number 18. (the photos show Cole Mann, Jonathan Stavinoha, Dallas Ponder, our team at home plate following one of Dallas' homers, Ross in the background, Clay Gaddy, Jason Zbranek, and Kevin Daniels)
We also had 4 players named to the All-Tournament Team. Joe Tallerine, Ross Goebel, Dallas Ponder, and Jason Zbranek were our four all-tournament picks. (they are, of course, the three pitchers who stared on Sunday and collected wins, plus Jason, who came through with the huge strikeout to end the Semifinal game) In addition, Joe Tallerine was named Championship Game MVP (winning pitcher, 2-2, HR, 3B, HBP in championship).

While there is no added fee to play on the All-Star Team (your fee for the regular season team takes care of your eligibility and insurance for both the regular and All-Star seasons), we do play in select tournaments and games during the week in order to prepare for Babe Ruth Tournaments. These select tournaments have entry fees that must be paid, and we must pay umpires for the extra weekday games. Therefore, we must ask our players to provide the funds necessary for this. We have discussed what amount of money we will need this season with our players at practice.
One new thing that we are requiring is a REFUNDABLE deposit of $50 for jerseys. Note that this money will be returned to the player/parent when each player turns in both of his league-owned jerseys at the end of the season. (We were reluctant to do this, but last year we purchased new jerseys and lost 2 pair of jerseys when players did not bring them back. We are trying to find some way of minimizing these yearly losses of equipment)
