Published: Saturday, January 30, 2010 9:54 PM CSTIn an absolutely brilliant day of competition, the Taylor High School boys swimming and diving team held off both Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes to win the district title Saturday afternoon at the Katy High School Natatorium.Entering the final event of the day – the 400-meter relay, Taylor sat second in the team standings with 118 points, trailing Cinco Ranch (121) and holding a slight lead over Seven Lakes (116).

The Mustang 400-relay squad was seeded just third in the 400, but outswam the competition to rack up 18 points and finish with 136. Cinco Ranch took third to finish with 133 and Seven Lakes was second to finish with 130 in the closest three-team race in district history.

“After the prelims, I told our guys we've got our work cut out for us,” Taylor second-year head coach Rick Barker said.“We had a lot of points down the stretch and the guys competed amazingly.”Barker was named Boys' Coach of the Year.

Taylor piled up 56 points in the final three events – the 400 relay, 100 breast and 100 backstroke. The biggest surge came in the backstroke as Cooper Robinson won the event, Jake Blegen took second and David Harlan finished third.

Seven Lakes actually racked up the most points among the boys teams in the afternoon swimming finals, but the diving competition did them in. Cinco Ranch took the top three spots in boys' diving, and Taylor notched 10 points while Seven Lakes had only one competitor in the event.

On the girls' side of the pool, Cinco Ranch outpointed Seven Lakes 184-164 for another title. Not surprisingly, head coach Christie Patterson earned Coach of the Year Honors.“Seven Lakes is a great program and they're definitely on the fast track,” Patterson said. “It was exciting to see our girls go out and swim some great races today and show a lot of heart”The top six swimmers in each event advance to the regional competition in two weeks.

Taylor's Robinson was named Male Swimmer of the Meet. In addition to winning the 100 back, he took third in the 100 freestyle and was a crucial link in the Mustangs' relay squads. Seven Lakes' Anne Steele was named Female Swimmer of the Meet. Individually, Steele won the 200 free and 100 fly and helped the Spartans finish second in the 400 free relay, first in the 200 medley relay and second in the 200 free relay.First-place winners are listed below.
