Lightning Online

*Welcome to the home of the Tamaki Lightning! The purpose of this site is to provide you with information and developments from within the Lightning programme.

The bar has been raised for American Football in New Zealand. The teams are getting stronger, coaching is getting better and the Lightning are pleased to be a part of this wonderful sport. With the growth of the sport and the level of play dramatically improving with each season, the future of American Football in New Zealand looks very promising.

The Tamaki Lightning are always looking for new players. We feel we do an excellent job at the club of teaching the basics of the sport so that you can learn properly, be successful and enjoy the physical/strategical nature of this sport.

The 2008-2009 campaign came to an end for the Lightning Premiers with a 14-0 loss to the Metro Lions.  The Lions scored in the first two minutes and the final three minutes of the game.  Every other minute of the game was about as even as two teams can be.  The Lightning defense held Metro's offense out of the endzone, from inside their own five yard line, to finish the first half down 6-0.  The Lightning offense got inside the Metro 20 a few times, but one missed FG was the only real scoring opportunity of the game.  Metro scored late in the game and converted the 2 point conversion to win 14-0.

Metro then went on to beat the South Auckland Raiders 20-14 in the finals.  The Lightning would like to congratulate both teams on their success this season.

The Auckland Vulcans take on the Wellington Storm on Saturday March 21st at 11am.  The game is scheduled to be played at Harvey Wright Fields in Birkenhead.  Any Lightning players intersted in playing for the Vulcans need to contact Coach Rob for training details and equipment as soon as possible.

Good luck to any players that are taking on the challenge of a winter sport.  For those that aren't planning on playing rugby, league, soccer, curling, netball, etc. need to make sure they are hitting up the gym and staying fit for next season.  Feel free to email me if you need an off-season training programme.  See you in September!!
