LOCAL WRESTLERS WIN AT RENO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Vancouver, Washington, April 20, 2007 The Southwest Washington Wrestling Club (SWWWC) had a several of its wrestlers place at the Reno World Championships held April 6-8, 2007 in Reno, Nevada.
Tommy Strassenberg earned the title of Champion by placing first at the Reno World Championships in the eight years and under division at sixty-seven pounds. (See photo attached).
Tommy competed in the 8 & under division 67# and wrestled over a three day period pinning his opponents up to the semifinals which he won 9-0 and then winning his finals match 7-0. He was not scored on in any of his matches. We attribute this to good head position, hand fighting and attitude all attributes developed by Merle (Crockett) and other coaches, stated his father Tom Strassenberg.
Josh Newberg placed 4th at the Reno World Championships in the under 12 year old division competing at 67 pounds. Josh Newberg lost his first match and then battled all the way back through the consolation side of the bracket to wrestle in the medal round for a possible third place finish. He eventually ended up losing a hard fought match by points and finishing a respectable 4th, stated Tom Strassenberg.
The other Southwest Washington Wrestling Club members who competed in the Reno World Championship tournament include: Jared Newberg (Under 10/58 lbs.) and Emilio Alcantar.
The club works out in the wrestling room at Battle Ground High School from 5:30 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Well, we must be doing something right to have these wrestlers that are new to the sport do so well after our more experienced wrestlers had a similar success rate at State last weekend. Im proud of all these boys but I have to admit I got something extra out of watching little Jacob Ray win the first match he ever wrestled and go on to finish third. It just doesnt get much better than that., said Merle Crockett, Head Coach, SWWWC.
