Merle Crockett has had a wrestling club in this area for over twenty years. The Southwest Washington Wrestling Club (SWWWC) is sanctioned by USA Wrestling and is a member of the North West Junior Colleagiate Wrestling Association (NWJCWA), a wrestling league in the greater Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.

Most recently, Head Coach, Merle Crockett has served as Cadet Director for the Washington Wrestling Association. He has also coached the Washington National team, both Greco-Roman and Free Style for ten (10+) years. He has coached the U.S. National School Boy Dual Meet team and the Washington Women’s National team twice. In sum, he has coached kids from 6yrs to 26yrs at more than 60 National tournaments in more than 10 States.

A $75.00 fee is required to join our club and participate in optional tournaments on Saturdays & Sundays. This fee covers club expenses and includes a complimentary club tee shirt.

In addition, YOU MUST HAVE A USA WRESTLING CARD TO WRESTLE WITH OUR CLUB. You may purchase your membership card on-line at WWW.THEMAT.COM. The cost is approximately $45.00.

After receiving instruction from one of the most experienced coaches available and working out with some of the most accomplished wrestlers in our area, SWWWC members will have the opportunity to compete against against opponents (usally three) of equal age, weight (no more than two years age difference or five pound weight difference) and ability from more than thirty other USA Wrestling clubs in the area at optional tournaments free of charge during the Collegiate season.

Tournaments are held Saturdays/Sundays. To participate, wrestlers must check in with a coach before 8:00 A.M. at the tournament site and present their USA Wrestling card. Wrestling begins at 9:00 A.M. and usually lasts four hours or more depending on the size fo the tournament. If you do not check in BEFORE 8:00 A.M., you will not be able to wrestle in the tournament.

Practice in Battle Ground Area will be in the wrestling rom from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays (and Sundays). . T-shirts, shorts or sweatpants are acceptable attire. No jeans or clothes with zippers allowed. Wrestling shoes (available at most athletic stores) optional, but suggested. To protect the wrestling mats, shoes must be clean (NOT worn outside). Bring a clean pair of shoes to change into for practice. Parents who choose to be in the wrestling room must remove their street shoes, NO EXCEPTIONS.

First and foremost, be sure you maintain a balanced diet, drink lots of water, and get your rest. As a courtesy to your team mates, if you are sick, don't come to practice. For example, if you have "thrown up", you may be contagious for the next 24 hours. Wrestling is the ultimate one-on-one close contact sport. This makes it imperative that you avoid contagious skin diseases. If you develop a rash in an exposed area, you will NOT be allowed to wrestle. Consult your coach or your physician for effective remedies. Please keep your fingernails clipped short at all times.

The SWWWC does not want the cost of membership to be a barrier to any young person wishing to wrestle. If due to financial hardship you are unable to afford the cost of membership, scholarship applications are available upon request.

If you are interested in joining the SWWWC or would like information regarding Collegiate, Free Style or Greco-Roman wrestling competitions in our area, contact Merle Crockett at (360) 263-4947 or
