Tryout Information
Tryouts are required for certain levels of play in both the baseball and softball programs. One of the main purposes of the tryouts is to insure that players are playing at a level appropriate for their ability. Every effort is made to form as many teams as possible with the available players at each level. Generally if you have played at a particular level the previous season you're not required to attend the tryouts to play at that same level again.
Every effort is made to conduct the tryouts as fairly as possible. Generally there are at least two coaches conducting the tryouts as well as the Player Agent. The Player Agent is a SW Portland Little League board member that monitors the tryouts so that they are conducted in the appropriate manner.
We realize the kids may be nervous about attending the tryouts, but they really shouldn't be. Many times you'll hear us also refer to the the tryouts as 'evaluations' and they are really just conducted like a regular practice. There are various drills that are run through and no one is singled out or grouped in any way based on skill. Parents are encouraged to attend if they think it will help their child feel more comfortable. Parents are also encouraged to bring their own gloves and throw the ball around as well.
When: Feb. 11 & 25
Where: All tryouts will be at Jackson Middle School gym
Tryouts for baseball and softball will be at the same location on the same dates this year and will be conducted at the following times:
Baseball: register/check in at 12:30 with tryouts from 1:00-2:00pm for Majors, register/check in 1:30 with tryouts from 2:00-3:30 for AAA.
Softball: register/check in at 1:00 with tryouts from 1:30-3:00pm for BOTH Majors and AAA.
Walk-in registrations will be accepted, but you must be registered before participating in the tryouts. All those desiring to play on AAA or Majors MUST attend one of the above tryouts.
