* Bulldogs Fall to Archbold *

ARCHBOLD -  Even though there was a impressive opening drive by the Bulldog offense to begin the contest, the game went downhill from there as the Bulldogs fell to the Archbold Bluestreaks by a score of 40-7 this past Friday night. Despite the very dissapointing outcome of the game, Head Coach Ben Ohlemacher and his staff remain positive as they vow to continue to improve the team and make progress this season. The coaching staff did not emphasize any moral victories but did come away with a few positive signs from the game. Sophmore Quarterback Travis Hilton continued to improve and be a leader for the Bulldog offense as he made some great runs and also connected with his go-to receiver Louis Miller 3 times for 65 yards. Kaylan Gilliam and Mimmo Lytle also made some big plays catching the ball for the offense. On the ground, Darnell Hinds continued to make some exciting runs while sophmore fullback Mimmo Lytle rushed for 22 yards including a touchdown for the Bulldogs. Nick Yunker provided the extra point. Seniors Jake Redfox, Cole Doren, Kyle Gilliam, all displayed the toughness and effort the coaching staff has emphasized from day 1 as they were leaders for the Bulldog defense.

     Garrett Morton threw for three touchdowns and ran for another for Archbold (3-2, 2-1). Morton's TD passes were thrown to three receivers - Drew Smith (35 yards), Trey Westrick (39 yards) and Noah Keefer (19 yards). Morton added a three-yard TD run to make the score 34-0 in the third quarter. He completed 13 of 17 pass attempts for 190 yards. Westrick caught five passes for 87 yards.

     Although the game was a dissapointment for the Swanton football program, the coaching staff and the players were back to work early Saturday morning preparing hard for their next oppoent , the Liberty Center Tigers. The Bulldogs will take the trip down to Liberty Center to face their NWOAL rival this Friday, October 2nd. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm

* Bulldog JV News *

    This past Saturday morning, the Swanton Bulldogs JV team welcomed the Archbold Bluestreaks JV squad to Hansbarger Stadium. The JV squad was not intimidated by the Bluestreaks despite the dissapointing varsity defeat the night before in a physical, defensive battle. Despite great play by the JV defense, the JV team was defeated by a score of 26-12. Quarterback Sam Knepley, wide receiver Paul Kennedy, and tight end Casey McCaw all made big plays for the JV offense. Linebacker Jacob Ressinger, defensive end Jamie St. Clair, defensive tackle Ramon Labiche, and defensive back Andrew Foore all made big plays on defense. The next JV game will take place on Monday, October 5th at Liberty Center with a 4:30pm kickoff time.

*A Look at This Week's Opponent*

Liberty Center Tigers

Coach: Rex Lingruen, 25th year

Last season: 9-1 overall, 7-1 NWOAL

Returning letter winners: 14

Returning starters: offense 5, defense 4

Schemes: Wing-T, 5-2

FROM THE TOLEDO BLADE PREVIEW:

Outlook:

 The Tigers were hit hard by graduation, losing six starters on offense and seven on defense. But 14 lettermen do return, including several top performers on both sides. On offense the Tigers welcome back three all-league players in Elling, who ran for 850 yards; Sharp, the top returning lineman; and Prchlik, a well-regarded receiver.  Defensively, Sharp finished with 95 tackles a year ago, while Hefflinger posted 85 stops as a freshman. "We may have as many as nine players who go both ways," Lingruen said. "If we stay healthy, we should be pretty competitive. But we have no depth whatsoever."
