Swanton Bulldogs Football: Program News: Bulldogs Hit a Roadblock in Lake
Bulldogs Hit a Roadblock in Lake
*Bulldogs Hit a Roadblock in Lake*
This past Friday, the Swanton Bulldogs traveled to Lake High School to take on the Flyers in the opening game of the 2009 season. Expectations were high, and there was electricity in the air for this non conference game for the 'Dogs. Unfortuantly, mental errors, some questionable calls by the officials, tremendous offensive play by the Flyers, and other bad breaks during the game doomed the Bulldogs as they dropped their season opener by a score of 24-3.
The Flyers had 188 yards rushing on 37 carries and were 7-of-9 passing for 108 yards. The Bulldogs tallied 59 yards rushing on 29 carries and sophmore Travis Hilton making his varsity football debut at Quarterback 12-of-26 for 103 yards. On a positive note, senior kicker/punter/receiver Nick Yunker had a productive night on special teams for the 'Dogs as he completed a 24 yard field goal in the fourth quarter and also provided a great effort on kickoffs and punts during the game.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs also received a strong effort on defense from senior defensive back Louis Miller who recorded an interception and junior defensive linemen Derek Johnson who recorded 6 tackles for the "junkyard" defense.
The Bulldog players and coaching staff were back to work early Saturday morning to prepare for their upcoming game with the defending NWOAL champions, the Patriots from Patrick Henry. Kickoff time is 7:00pm at Patrick Henry High School.
*A Look at This Week's Oppoenent*
Patrick Henry Patriots
Coach: Bill Inselmann, 19th year
Last season: 12-1 overall, 8-0 NWOAL
Returning letter winners: 12
Returning starters: offense 5, defense 6
Schemes: Shotgun "West Coast" Offense / Multiple Defense
FROM THE TOLEDO BLADE PREVIEW:
Top players: Seniors: Justin Buenger, 5-10, 180, HB-S;
Aaron George, 5-10, 200, TE-DE;
Luke George, 5-10, 185, QB-S;
Bill Miller, 5-11, 190, FB-LB;
Brad Yarnell, 5-11, 255, OT-DT.
Juniors: Josh Almanza, 5-10, 190, G-DE;
Xavier Dye, 5-9, 160, C-NG.
Outlook: A number of big names are back on offense, including all-league picks Buenger - who set a school record with 1,645 rushing yards - as well as Luke George - who threw for 1,681 yards. The same is true on defense thanks to the return of All-NWOAL performers Dye and Aaron George. But there are questions along both lines following the graduation of Cody Pettit, the district lineman of the year in Division V, and three-year starter Mike Gobrogge.
"You don't lose kids like that and just replace them easily," Inselmann said of his losses on the line. "With our losses on the line on offense, we're concerned that people will load up the box and force us to throw to be successful, so we're going to have to show some balance to be successful."
