The Devils gave up an opening game kickoff return for a touchdown, but after that, it was pretty much all Sharpsville as a second half comeback spelled defeat for the WPIAL power. Payback was sweet and the Devils defense held the Western Beaver offense scoreless in the 2001 season opener. Click the link or go to the albums page for pictures of tonight's game.
The Devils moved to 2-0 with a sound beating of the Brookfield Warriors. The defense was once again dominant in this 35-0 blowout that wasn't even close. The scoring was spread among several Devils while the Blue Devil defense remained unscored upon in two games. The game saw a little of everything with the "mercy rule" coming into effect midway through the 3rd and the Brookfield Head Coach getting tossed from the game for arguing a call. For now, let's savor this win. But not too long! Up next are the Pius X Royals, the number one ranked single A team in the state. Check out the album page for the pics of tonights game and the video clip page for some mpegs.
In what had to be one of the most bizarre finishes in high school football history, the number one ranked Pius X Royals pulled out a 10-9 victory over the Devils on a free kick that split the uprights on their last offensive play of the game. In one of the better games in recent Devils memory, Sharpsville proved they can play with the Big Boys in a game that seemed all but won until the Royals stole it back on a game ending free kick that is rarely ever used. The Devils D which has been dominating this year, essentially shut down Royals battering ram Eric Rath who ran for over 2000 yards last season. But as it turned out, it wasn't quite enough as Ray Rotell's PAT attempt went wide right in the second quarter. He redeemed himself with a 41 yard FG that bounced in off of the cross bar late in the 4th. It just wasn't to be however, and the Devils drop to 2-1 on the year. Take a look at the pics in the album section and some MPEGS in the video section. On yet another sunny Saturday afternoon, the Sharpsville Blue Devils once again proved superior to a larger visitor. The Devils are making a habit out of teaching their opponents that "Speed Kills" and demonstrated that with another victory today in their 27-12 win. That makes 22 in a row within the friendly confines of "The Pines". Sharpsville dominated most of the way jumping out to a 20-0 lead and never looked back. A couple of fluke catches and a late score in "garbage time" by St. Joe's made for the final. See the pics and the video by going to the album and video pages.
The Devils got off to a slow start and actually trailed 7-3 at the half, but after getting it together and showing what they're made of, they stormed back and took control and the game with a 23-10 win over the previously unbeated Raiders of Reynolds. The pics and videos are up. Take a look.
For the second week in a row The Devils made the necessary halftime adjustments and came out and did the job in their comeback win over AAA Hickory 19-7 in a constant downpour. The Devils played the spoiler once again downing the Hornets in their Homecoming game. Fighting the bad weather and numerous injuries, Sharpsville dominated the second half, scoring twice to pull out the victory. The highlight of the game was Ron Haywood's interception return for a TD late in the final quarter to ice the game. Ron was questionable for this game due to an injury but did the job when the Devils needed it most. With the win, Sharpsville moves to 5-1 and will face arch rival Kennedy Catholic next week in a crucial Single A matchup. Be there! Once again Sharpsville fans came out in full force to support the team they love. The annual Homecomint Parade was followed by a pep rally and bonfire. The team and the fans got ready for the crucial Single A matchup with arch rival Kennedy Catholic.
Well, it was that time of year again and in came the Kennedy Catholic Golden Buzz...I mean Eagles. For the 23rd time in a row at home, the Devils sent the fans home happy with a big win over arch enemy KCHS 35-0. The Devils "D" held KC without a single first down for the entire game! Now that is impressive. Sharpsville called of the dogs midway through the 4th but even the 2nd and 3rd teamers mounted a scoring drive against a tired and overmatched KC defense. Now it's on to West Middlesex for the MCAC single A title. See the album section and video section for pics and vids.
After a sluggish first half the Devils offensive engine came out firing on all cylinders in their Single A battle with the West Middlesex Big Reds. Sharpsville held an 18-6 halftime edge but came out in the second half and like they have to so many other teams this year, put an end to any hopes of a WM upset. The final was 37-6 and with this win, Sharpsville wins their 5th MCAC title in the last six years and moves to 7-1 on the year. Along with this win, the Devils get yet another engraved invitation to the PIAA Single A playoffs. We close out the 2001 regular season campaign next week at home against Campbell Memorial from Ohio. Don't forget, all former Devils football players are invited to participate in the Senior Night ceremony. Call Kathy Napotnik for details at 962-9954.
The Devils finished where they started...with a win, in taking apart Campbell Memorial in the battle of the Devils: Red vs Blue. As usual, The Blue came out on top as the Devils running game came up big in the 42-14 victory in the snow and mud. This was the last game in The Pines for 2001 where the Devils haven't lost in over 5 years in maintaining their now 24 game home win streak. We end the regular season at 8-1 and enter the district playoffs with some momemtum. See the pics from this game by clicking above and see two new videos in the video section. Also, stay tuned to the page for some pics from Senior Night and some closing thoughts on the season. See you next week in the playoffs!
For the last time, the seniors of Sharpsville High gathered together in the friendly confines of The Pines, and finished out the regular season. After four years as Sharpsville Blue Devils, the seniors said goodbye one last time. It was an extremely emotional night that began with a team meeting in the locker room where there wasn't a dry eye in the house, and ended with a big win over Campbell Memorial of Ohio. It was a night to remember not only because of the weather or the fireworks or the ceremony or the win. Instead, it was a night to remember for these young men, because they pledged to lay it all on the line for themselves, their families, their fans and most importantly each other, one last time at home. We joined tonight as a Sharpsville family to honor and congratulate them, and to wish them well as they enter the playoffs and more importantly as they entered the next chapter in their lives.
It was Lights Out for the Conneaut Valley Squad in round one of the District 10 playoffs tonight at Hickory High School. A pregame power outage delayed the start of the game but didn't delay the Devils ongoing mission to capture yet another District 10 Title. After holding the coin toss under the dim light of the scoreboard, the Devils came out slow and a little flat, but after the half poured it on like the dominant team they are, in a 40-15 sound beating of the FCVC rep. The field conditions, while not as bad as last week, certainly weren't ideal as the game was played on a thick muddy battleground. The powerful Devil running game proved too strong for CV tonight and using a combination of Ron Haywood, Eric Major, and Jeff Watson, Sharpsville pounded out a handful of TD's. Check out the pics in the album section and look at the videos in the new VIDEO PAGE (see above). Sharpsville plays Iroquois from the FCVC next week for the District 10 Championship. The date, time and place are yet to be announced, but most likely the game will be Saturday 11-10-01 at The Vet in Erie. We'll let ya know so come on back!
The Sharpsville Blue Devils won yet another District 10 Championship game in a 39-6 blowout against FCVC rep Iroquois. The overmatched Braves hung with the Devils for about half a period but then it was all Sharpsville the rest of the way in an all out, well balanced air and ground attack. A first half knee injury limited starting QB Bill Stiger to DB and WR in the second half but backup Mark Anglin showed the maturity and experience he has gained during the year in leading the Devils to the big win. With this win, the Devils claim their 4th D-10 title in the last 5 years. Sharpsville now awaits their next foe from D-9. Check back here during the week for the date, time, place, and opponent who will be either Coudersport or Curwensville (remember them?) who play Saturday. See you next week! Note: If you see a picture missing in any of the albums, I had to remove some due to size limitations.....Sorry. Nothing else to do? Take a look at what the extra-terrestrials see when they peer into their telescopes to watch the Devils play.
Well, it didn't take long for the Devils to display their dominace over D-9 champ Coudersport Falcons tonight at E.J. Mansell Stadium in Dubois, PA. Something like 15 seconds! Randy Vecchia took the opening kickoff about 80 yards for a quick 6-0 lead and the Devils never looked back. Sharpsville again rode on the backs of their backs with a fine display of power running sprinkled with a touch of passing. They topped off their scoring with a sweet halfback pass from Ron Haywood to Bill Stiger and the Devils will move on after this 35-12 trouncing of Coudersport. Next week we move on from the "Sweet 16" to the "Elite 8" against Bishop Carroll who defeated Windber 35-7. The game will be at Sharon's Tiger Stadium and will be at 7 PM on Friday 11/23/01. The State Quarterfinals will be in our house, so join the Devil Nation and be a part of history next week! Browse the albums page for the pics and go to the video page for two new videos.
Well guys, it's been a great run. But like all good things, it had to end. The Devils ran into a really tough Bishop Carroll Huskie team tonight and fell for just the second time all year, 24-13. BC opened up a quick first half lead 21-0 but the Devils got on the board before halftime with a big Ray Rotell fumble recovery and run for a TD. They then made some adjustments at halftime and came back with an early 3rd quarter TD, but the PAT was blocked and BC led 21-13. The Huskies tacked on a FG and the rest was history. It was an emotional night for the Devil Seniors who closed out their high school careers tonight with this loss. There was absolutely nothing to be ashamed of however because this Huskie team was for real! Their star running back Chad Shilling was awesome and QB Nate Crookshank has one great arm. Special congratulations and wishes of good luck go out to Sharpsville Seniors Chad Bucciarelli, Ron Haywood (who was also this week's student-athlete of the week on WYTV), Blase Iorio, Mike Kulka, Bill Stiger, Matt Holsopple, Eric Major, Brandon Pavone, Brett Peruzzi, Jerry Steen, Ryan Thompson, Dan Vamosi, Randy Veccia, Dave Wallace, and Mark Zreliak. We fans all salute you, thank you, and wish you all the very best of luck in whatever paths you take. On a personal note, let me say that it has been my honor, and my pleasure to be associated with you guys and with this organization. This year marks the end of Dr Bonz' 8th year as team doc, and I couldn't be more proud of you all. Everywhere I go, I always seem to find a way to mention "my team" in one way or another. Any time I see an athlete in my office or in the ER, the conversation always turns to the Devils. I'm like a proud father sometimes (yes, as hard as it is for me to accept, I'm old enough to be these guy's father!). I hope that I, in some small way, have contributed to the sucess of this proud program, and if asked, would do it gladly again in 2002. Good luck guys, God bless you all, and see you next year!
