The Glen Mills fans were getting loud but Josh Marquard (160) quieted them down a bit, pinning his opponent in the third period.
Next up for the visiting Vanguards was Adam Porter (171). Taking a 4-2 lead into the third period, Adam really hushed the crowd (except for the Sun Valley fans) and added 6 more points to the Vanguard lead by pinning his challenger in the third period. Mike Redden (189) made the crowd go silent with a hard fought 5-1 victory – giving the Vanguards an insurmountable 39-20 lead.
The JV action saw Mark Asebedo (119) tied 2-2 after the first and leading 6-4 after the second period. The end of the match saw Mark’s hand raised in victory, winning by a score of 6-5.

Shane Mullen (140) was trailing 4-1 after the first and 10-5 after the second period but didn’t back down and pinned his Eagle in the third period. Kyle Russell (145) worked hard and picked up a tech fall win. Sean Simon (152) went the distance for the win to add to Sun Valley’s growing lead. Josh Marquard (160) brought his contender down with a first period pin. Adam Porter (171) ended his match in the second period with a tech fall. Next came Tyler Brun (189) and Mike Redden (215) who both won by forfeit.
Mike Horvat (285) stepped on the mat next and kept the Vanguard armada going full steam ahead with a decision win for the Blue and Yellow. Vinnie Oristaglio (103) made quick work of his match as he pinned his opponent in just 25 seconds. Dan Stover (119) also went the distance and outscored his opponent to give the final win of the night to the Vanguards.
In JV action, Nick Cox (103) took not quite one minute to pin his opponent while Mark Asebedo (112) also pinned his challenger in the first period.

On Saturday, January 26 Sun Valley hosted the Annual Vanguard Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Teams in attendance were Central Bucks South, Upper Darby, Glen Mills, Radnor, J.W. Robinson, St. Marks and Penncrest.
In case you are wondering about where J.W. Robinson is, keep reading. Robinson is located in northern Virginia and is the high school that our own Coach "K" attended. They are a very good team and have two wrestlers who are ranked in the top 5 of the state and were very well represented.
Sun Valley did very well as they placed three wrestlers in the final match for the championship and two wrestlers in the consolation finals. Our one "One" - ending his day in first place was Josh Marquard (160). Sean Simon (152) and Adam Porter (171) are our two "Twos", both finishing the tournament with the second place medal. Earning third place and our two "Threes" are Dan Stover (119) and Mike Redden (189).

Vanguards light up the Knight(s) - win 34 - 29
On a windy evening in Delaware County, the Vanguards of Sun Valley invaded the territory of the Academy Park Knights. It was going to be an evening to remember. As the match drew near, you could feel the electricity building. The stands were getting more and more full and the noise level was escalating. It was time for the battle of the unbeatens. Both teams were psyched and ready to head into battle. The captains meet at center mat, the flip of the coin and it was time to get it on!
The first match of the evening was to be Shane Mullen (140). Trailing after the first period 0-2, leading after the second 3-2 and tied after regulation 5-5 into overtime they went. Needing only 20 seconds of the one-minute overtime period, Shane pinned his opponent to give Sun Valley the early 6-0 lead. With the Knights coming back, taking an 11-6 lead, Sean Simon (160) stepped up and controlled the entire match, winning with a major decision to bring Sun Valley to within one point of Academy Park.
Josh Marquard (171) was next, pinning his challenger in the first period. Adam Porter (189) lead after the first, the second and the third periods to earn a decision win and three more points for the Vanguards, making the score 19-11 in favor of Sun Valley. Showing that they would not go away quietly, the Knights came storming back to take a 20-19 lead. Putting a halt to the Knights stampede was Vinnie Oristaglio (103) who pinned his competitor in the second period to give the Vanguards a 25-20 lead. A lead they would never relinquish.
In a huge match, Dan Asebedo (112) came out on fire and was he energized! Scoring a very quick takedown in the first period, Dan kept the pressure on. Not wanting to give up any points, Dan increased his lead to 3-0 after the second period and would need every point he scored. When the final whistle for the match blew, Dan added three more points to Sun Valley's score with a 3-2 victory.
Jim Chen (119) took to the center of the mat in what was to be the longest match of the evening. Leading 2-0 after the first period, Jim found himself tied 2-2 after the second. When the third period bell sounded, the score was still 2-2.Whew! Another overtime match. (I told you this was going to be an evening to remember.) Do you think someone would score any points in the one-minute sudden victory overtime to end the match? Nooooooo, the score was still tied 2-2. Now it was time for two 30-second periods. Scoring a three point nearfall in the first 30-second period, Jim held off his opponent in the second 30-second period to take a very hard earned and very tiring 5-2 victory.
While both sides of the gym getting louder, stomping their feet and yelling encouragements, Dan Stover (125) stepped up with the chance to put the match out of reach for the Knights. Tied 2-2 after the first period, Dan scored a takedown in the second to lead 4-2 after two. Dan held off his opponent in the third period to take the victory 4-3 to end the scoring for The Valley, giving The Vanguards an insurmountable 34-20 lead.
A job well done by the coaches for getting this team ready to wrestle and a job well done by all the wrestlers for bringing your "A" game.

Vanguards sink Bucs - 43-16 - Take DEL-VAL Championship!
It was a night to remember. Sun Valley Wrestling already had a piece of the Del-Val Championship secured going into the evening but they were not in a sharing mood and wanted the championship all to themselves. As the start of the match drew closer, the stands became more and more filled. With the noise in the gym growing, the excitement, energy and tension was thick and getting thicker with each passing second.
With Sun Valley down 4-0, Kyle Russell (145) earned a tough decision win, starting the Vanguard engine with the first of 8 straight Vanguard wins. Sean Simon (152) was next in the drivers seat, going the distance and taking care of his Buc with an 8-5 victory to give Sun Valley a 6-4 lead in the match. Shaun Lessik (160) revved the engine some more and electrified the crowd with a second period pin of his opponent. Josh Marquard (171) took the crowd and team higher with another second period pin.
Adam Porter (189) upped the noise level in the gym, taking his foe down with a thundering third period pin. Vinnie Oristaglio (103) sent the match out of reach with a 7-1 decision victory, giving Sun Valley an insurmountable 36-4 lead. Jeff Chen (125) made his opponent walk the plank with a 6-2 victory while Matt Johnson (135) ended the scoring for the evening with a 9-0 major decision victory.

Four Sun Valley Wrestlers head to the Regional Tournament
Dan Stover, Sean Simon, Josh Marquard and Adam Porter. The four Sun Valley wrestlers who are advancing onto the Regional Tournament next week. We wish all the best of luck and you have our full support.
Sun Valley wrestlers are starting to make a name for themselves and for the Sun Valley wrestling program. This tournament consists of the best wrestlers from 29 teams in our district competing against each other to advance to the next levels, first the Regional Tournament then onto the State Tournament. Just to give you an idea of how good the wrestlers are that have advanced into this tournament, here are some stats of the eight weight classes that our Vanguards wrestled in.
Weight Wins Losses Winning Percentage
103 252 78 76%
119 225 88 72%
130 245 94 72%
135 225 82 73%
152 194 108 64%
160 202 69 75%
171 236 59 80%
189 165 88 65%
The overall winning percentage for all the wrestlers competing in the same weight brackets that our guys did was 72% with a total of 1,744 wins. These guys know how to wrestle and take no prisoners. Just to get to this level is an achievement in itself and something all our boys should be proud of.
As a team, the Vanguards improved from last year which is what coaches are always looking for, continuous improvement. This year our eight wrestlers ended the day in 5th place with 74 team points. Out of eight wrestlers going to Districts, four have advanced to the Regional Tournament.
With Friday wrestling cancelled due to inclement weather, Saturday was going to be very full. Some matches have to be completed on Monday due to a rule in the P.I.A.A. which states that no wrestler can wrestle more than 5 matches in one day. There are quite of matches to be finished on Monday, including one by Mike Redden.
Vinnie Oristaglio (103), one of our Freshmen wrestlers, started his day with a first round bye. In the Quarter Finals, Vinnie wrestled valiantly but fell in a tough match. Starting off in the Consolation opening rounds, Vinnie won his first match, defeating a Haverford wrestler by decision. In the Consolation Quarter Finals, Vinnie wrestled an Interboro wrestler and earned the right to continue via a 4-0 decision win. Wrestling in the Consolation Semi Finals, Vinnie faced Dan Dortone from Springfield, who has a record of 32-4. Vinnie lost to the eventual third place winner in a tough match. Vinnie ended his day and freshman season as the District’s sixth place finisher. A very good start to a promising career.
Dan Stover (119) began his day being Sun Valley’s first to wrestle. Dan made quick work of his opening round opponent, pinning him in the second period. In the Quarter Finals, Dan faced the third seed and duplicated his first round performance with a second period pin. Moving into the Semi Finals, Dan skillfully wrestled his way into the Championship Round with a 4-2 decision win. Facing Zac Haynes from Council Rock North, the #1 seed, Dan gave his all before dropping a tough match. Dan will move onto the Regional Tournament next week at Council Rock South and extend his season at least one more week.
Charlie Morgan (130) was paired up against Jason Hirsh from Council Rock South, the eventual second place finisher in the opening rounds. Charlie twisted, turned and gave it his all but was outscored by Jason, putting Charlie in the Consolations. In the Consolation rounds, Charlie wrestled heroically however was unable to find an answer to his opponent. Charlie shows great promise for the future and will be looked at as a leader for the wrestling team next year. With the experiences that Charlie has had this year, it’s a good thing that Charlie goes to Sun Valley as he will be a definite asset to the team next year.
Matt Johnson (135), another Freshman wrestler wrestled in his first District Championship Tournament and was paired against a senior wrestler from George Washington High School. Matt wrestled very well, but faced a wrestler with too much experience and dropped the challenging match by 7-1 decision. In his Consolation opening round, Matt was again paired against a senior wrestler, this time from Council Rock South. Matt gave it his all but had his season come to an end. Matt will bring a ton of experience back to the team from this District Tournament and will only improve himself and the team next year. Look for good things in the next three years from Matt.
Sean Simon (152) also started in the Preliminary Rounds facing an opponent of equal skills and determination. Sean was leading most of the way until his foe made a very skillful reversal for two points right at the end of the match to move Sean into the Consolation Rounds. Dropping a very tough match like that could do a number on your psyche, but not Sean. They don’t call don’t call them wrestle-backs for nothing. In the first round of the wrestle-backs, Sean took care of his Bensalem opponent by a score of 9-8. In the Consolation Quarter Finals, Sean ended another opponent’s season with a 5-2 decision victory. Up now was the Consy Semi Finals where Sean faced the same opponent that gave him his first round loss. Sean made sure there was no repeat and soundly defeated him by a score of 10-3. Sean wrestled aggressively in the Consy Finals but dropped a hardfought 6-1 decision to end his day in 4th place. By way of his 4th place, Sean has earned the right to represent Sun Valley in the Regional Tournament also next week. Sean will take a wealth of experience and skill to the Regionals and will be back one more year with the Vanguards.
Josh Marquard (160) started his day with a first round bye. Wrestling in the Quarter Finals, Josh moved into the Semi Finals with a victory. In the Semi Finals, Josh faced Ed Shupe from Pennsbury. Everything Josh did was countered by Ed, moving Josh into the Consolation Quarter Finals with a very tough decision loss. In the Consy Quarter Finals, Josh didn’t have a lapse and took care of his opponent by pinning him in the second period. Moving into the Consy Finals Josh faced Pat Leahan from Springfield. Josh lost a very demanding decision match, ending his day in fourth place. Josh will also be wrestling next week at the Regional Tournament and will be looking for some payback.
Adam Porter (171) began his day wrestling in the Preliminary Rounds against Rich Applegate from Pennsbury. When that match was over, Adam secured the win with a 7-2 decision victory. Facing his Quarter Final opponent, Adam didn’t let the match go the distance by pinning his opponent in the second period. In the Semi Finals, Adam was opposite Jamie Callender (with a record of 39-2) from Council Rock North and the eventual champion. Adam gave his all before giving way to a second period fall. Moving into the Consy Semi Finals, Adam faced an tough opponent from Council Rock South, defeating him by a 6-2 decision. Facing the #3 seed, Adam went took his opponent into double overtime before scoring two points in the first round of double overtime and holding off his foe in the second round of the second overtime for a well earned 6-4 decision victory and third place. Adam is the fourth Sun Valley from this year to head to this year’s Regional Tournament. Adam has the skill and determination to excel next week at Regionals and will be a force to be reckoned with.
Mike Redden (189) didn’t have to wrestle in the Preliminaries due to a first round bye. In the Quarter Finals, Mike defeated a Council Rock South wrestler by a score of 1-0. In the Semi Finals, Mike was matched up with the tournament’s #3 seed from Pennsbury. Mike threw everything he had at his opponent but dropped a hard-fought 6-3 decision. Heading into the Consy Semi Finals, Mike faced Rob Dowd from Haverford. With the score tied at the end of regular time and at the end of the first overtime, they went into the second overtime with Mike coming up just short with a 3-2 decision loss. Mike will be back up at Council Rock North on Monday because his opponent had wrestled 5 matches already on Saturday. Mike will be wrestling for 5th place and this will be the last match of the year for him. Mike will be back at The Valley for one more year and it is definitely a huge advantage to have Mike wearing the Blue and Gold of Sun Valley.
To the wrestlers who have ended their season at the District Tournament, keep your heads high – you have nothing to fret about. You will bring a wealth of experience back to the team next year and will all be assets to build upon.
Sunday, March 2
Incredible season comes to a close at Regionals
As Adam Porter, Josh Marquard, Sean Simon and Dan Stover prepare to wrestle against the best wrestlers from our region, we will take a quick look at just how good the competition is at this level. The wrestlers in this tournament as a whole (all wrestlers in all weight classes) have a record of 5,018 wins and 1,291 losses for a winning percentage of 80%. The weight classes that Adam, Dan, Sean and Josh are wrestling in have 1,488 wins against 358 losses for a winning percentage of 80%.
The Regional Tournament opened on Friday night with wrestling to consist of Round 1 and the Quarterfinals. Sun Valley's first wrestler to see action in Round 1 was Sean Simon (152). Sean was paired against Don Smith from Hatboro Horsham. Sean twisted and turned but was caught and fell in the second period. Josh Marquard (160) was next and faced off against Devon Passman from Central Bucks East who had an identical 33-2 record as Josh. When the dust settled, Josh fell in a tough match by a score of 6-5. Adam Porter (171) Sun Valley's last wrestler to go in the opening rounds was matched up with Joe Stolfi from Souderton. Leading after every period, Adam advanced into the Quarterfinals with a 6-2 decision victory.
The Quarterfinals opened with Dan Stover (119), who had a first round bye. Dan's opponent was Zach Robinson from Pottsgrove. Trailing by one point after the second period, everything Dan threw at Zach was countered when Dan got caught and fell very near the end of the third period. Adam Porter was next and faced Josh Homer from Downingtown West, the number one seed. Zach stopped everything Adam tried and Adam went down by decision. As we left for the night, we were greeted by dark skies (of course it's dark cause it's 10:00 PM) with the snow coming down.
Saturday dawned clear but windy and wrestling started with Round 1 of the Consolations. Dan Stover (119) was first on the mat and was met by Bob Gildea of Springfield. Trailing going into the third period by a score of 1-0, Dan made a tremendous throw for a two-point takedown securing the lead and a 2-1 victory. Sean Simon (152) faced his old nemesis, Fernie Ozuna from Glen Mills. Sean gave it his all, threw everything he had at his opponent however dropped a tough decision to end an excellent year for Sean.
In Josh Marquard's (160) match, he faced Max Callopy from Central Bucks West. After scoreless first and second periods, Josh's year was brought to an end with a tough decision loss. A tough end for a stupendous year of wrestling. Adam Porter's (171) challenger was Andrew Scholer from William Tennent. With a 0-0 first period score, Adam entered the third period with a 2-1 lead. Late in the third period with time winding down Adam scored an incredible takedown for two points, the lead and the win by a score of 4-3. How much time was left in the third period when Adam scored his 2-point takedown and secured the win? I'm glad you asked, how does 3 seconds left in the match sound? Adam advanced into the Consolation Quarterfinals by keeping the pressure on and wrestling up to the final whistle.
In the Consolation Quarterfinals Dan Stover's outstanding season ended with a tough decision loss at the hands of Tim Boate from West Chester Henderson. Adam Porter was facing Dave Smith from Hatboro Horsham. Adam's Sun Valley career was extended at least one more match as he took one more step forward with a hard earned 3-2 decision victory. In the Consolation Semi-finals, Adam met the number 2 seed, Nick Edmunson from Upper Perkiomen. Adam's advancement through the ranks was ended with a tough hard fought 9-8 loss. Adam had one more match to go and finished his incredible year and great career with a 6th place finish at one of the toughest tournaments around.
Without offending any other wrestler, when a wrestler advances from the Sectional Tournament to the District Tournament, the skill level of wrestlers competing is upped by at least 50%. Just qualifying for the Districts is something to be very proud of. When a wrestler moves up to the Regional Tournament, the wrestling skill leaps up at least another 50%. The wrestling at this level is extraordinary. These are some of the best wrestlers in the state. Our state is broken up into 5 regions. Within each region, there are 12 wrestlers competing in each weight bracket. What that means is that the Sun Valley wrestlers competing in the South-East Regional Tournament among the top 60 best wrestlers from each weight bracket in the entire state of Pennsylvania.
This brings to an end an incredible season for Sun Valley Wrestling. The Vanguards always found a way to go the extra mile whenever it was called for. Being moved out of your weight class and comfort level, weather it was bumping up in weight class or being asked to lose weight and drop a weight class to help out the team, our guys did it. They did it without whining or saying, "Why me?". They just took it upon their shoulders, stood up to the challenge put upon them and succeeded in every possible way.
The 2007-08 Vanguards had a magnificent season. They ended the year as undefeated Del-Val champions, their second consecutive Del-Val championship. They sent eight wrestlers to the District Tournament and four wrestlers to the Regional Tournament.
To the wrestlers that are graduating this year, Mike Horvat, Adam Porter and Kyle Russell, we wish you the best of luck in everything you do and will miss you. Your leadership, skill and friendship will always be a part of Sun Valley Wrestling. You will always be welcomed back, so make sure you come back to cheer on your teammates.
To the wrestlers coming back, enjoy your time off and get ready to compete with some very good wrestling schools as you enter uncharted territory by heading into a new league. Have a great summer and we will see you in the fall.
Next up: The Vanguard Wrestling Banquet - Sunday, March 30 at Aston-Beechwood

Wrapping up an incredible wrestling season!
On Sunday, March 30, 2008, Aston-Beechwood Firehouse again played host to Sun Valley Wrestling Team's annual banquet. It was the end of another great season of wrestling,
Upon entering the hall, guests, wrestlers and parents were greeted by the wonderful smells of the cuisine prepared by the Italian Brothers Catering. There was salad, fruit salad, rolls and butter, stuffed chicken, chicken fingers, sausage scaloppini, baked ziti, red bliss potatoes, green beans almandine. The wonderful championship cake we enjoyed for dessert was made by Sharon Ryan.
Everyone was also greeted by the incredible slideshow prepared by Tom Morgan. Tom used pictures from the past season and incorporated music into the mix for a first-class slideshow. Everyone was seen watching the show and laughing at the word balloons Tom inserted into some of the pictures.
Tom Morgan began the evening by introducing the special guests and the coaches and their families. Tom then gave the blessing and it was now time to finally put a taste to the wonderful smells that flooded the senses. After dinner, Susan Lessik gave a brief speech praising the accomplishments, dedication and care of Coach Damon Kuzemka. She then presented him with a plaque signifying that he was selected as Del-Val Coach of the Year. An award that is much deserved.
