The Vanguards were one of sixteen teams competing in the Delco Duals at Academy Park High School on Saturday, December 27, 2008. Last year, Sun Valley finished in 5th place with 4 wins. Always wanting to do better than before, Sun Valley put the pressure on themselves. Boy, did they respond!

Jeff Chen (135) and Jim Chen (140) both stopped their matches in the first period with pins, giving Sun Valley the win.
Match #3 - Sun Valley - 53 - Lee Davis - 15
Lee Davis traveled from Richmond, Virginia and had the unfortunate luck to be placed in the same pool as the building snowball known as Sun Valley Vanguards wrestling team. Sean Simon (152) started the ball rolling with a 12-0 major decision win. After Josh Marquard (160) pinned his foe in the third period, Seth Snyder (171) won by decision. Mike Redden (215) was the second Vanguard to win by major decision. Paris Covington (285) won by forfeit then watched Dan Asebedo (103) pin his foe in the first period.
Mark Asebedo (112) was all business, winning by a second period tech-fall. Vinny Oristaglio (119) kept the Vanguards on track with another first period pin. Not to be out-done, Dan Stover (125) added six points to the Vanguards total with his own first period pin. . Chuck Morgan (130) was next and worked a tough win by decision. Jeff Chen (135) ended the scoring for Sun Valley with a major decision win.
Match #4 - The first match in the Championship Rounds

Shaun Lessik (189) added three more points for Sun Valley with a decision win. Mike Redden (215) put up his own first period pin and was followed by Paris Covington (285) who showed that hard work can lead to victory as he claimed a decision win. Dan Asebedo (103) showed his work ethic with a second period tech-fall. Vinny Oristaglio (119) put Sun Valley up 26-10 with a tough decision win.
Dan Stover (125) didn't take long as he pinned his opponent in 55 seconds of the first period. Chuck Morgan (130) ran the score up by five points with a third period tech-fall. Sean Simon (152) closed out the match in the second period with a tech-fall.
Match #5 - The Championship Final
Sun Valley - 32 - Harry S. Truman - 30
Here it is, the match-up for all the marbles. What a match this was, back and forth for the entire 14 matches with no one knowing the outcome, or even guessing how it would eventually turn out.
Shaun Lessik (189) put Sun Valley on the board and made the score 6-6 by pinning his foe in the first period. Mike Redden (215) followed with a very gutsy performance, winning by decision despite wrestling with about a 35 pound weight disadvantage. With the score tied at 9-9, Dan Asebedo (103) pinned his opponent in 53 seconds of the first period. With Sun Valley trailing 15-18, Dan Stover (125) showed his determination by winning a very tough match by decision tying the score again at 18. With Sun Valley down by a score of 17-24 (after losing a team point), Jim Chen (140) added three points for the Vanguards winning by decision.
With two matches to go, Sun Valley found themselves down by a score of 20-30. Needing 11 points to get the win and the championship, Sun Valley's captains were up. Sean Simon (152), who was a wrecking machine all day, was up. Psyched up is an understatement for how Sean was going into this match. He knew what he needed to do and was prepared to take care of business. When the whistle that signaled the end of Sean's match blew, only 19 seconds had elapsed in the first period. What happened? Sean barely worked up a sweat pinning his opponent making the score Sun Valley 26 to Truman's 30. Josh Marquard (160) went to the center of the mat and with everyone that was remaining in the gym, including the Harry S. Truman wrestling team, a large circle formed around the mat as Josh accepted a forfeit win to give the championship to Sun Valley. This circle was full of applause and cheering because this win was the 100th win in Josh's career.
Sun Valley showed what they are made of today. With tearing through the first three teams, then repeating the performance in the semi-finals, it would have been easy to let down in the final match. Facing their toughest opponent on the day, the Vanguards brought their "A" game and took control of their own destiny. Working hard, facing all challenges head on and rising to the occasion has earned the blue and gold a first place trophy!
Congratulations to the entire Sun Valley wrestling team and the coaches. Your hard work has paid off. Now only one problem remains - room has to be made in the trophy case for a new first place trophy!

Wow, what a match. They get some points, we get some points, they get more points, we get more points. That is the way this entire match went with no one being able to get the upper hand until late in the match.
The Vanguards traveled to Indian territory to take on the Unionville Indians in a Ches-Mont League match. Unionville came out wanting some Vanguard feathers but Sun Valley would have none of it. With Sun Valley down 0-12, Sean Simon (152) put the Vanguards on the board with a third period pin. Josh Marquard (160) followed with another pin, also in the third period to knot the score at 12.
Mike Redden (215) was leading after the first period and ended his foe's night early with a pin in the second period. Paris Covington (285) took his challenger down with 26 seconds to go in the first period to again tie the score, this time at 24-24. Dan Asebedo (103) came out on fire and lit up his opponent for a quick first period pin to put Sun Valley up for good.
Vinny Oristaglio (119) added 6 points to the Valley side by overwhelming his with a first period pin. With the Vanguards up by a score of 36-31, Chuck Morgan (130) put the match out of reach when he heard both, the ref's whistle blow and the slap of the hand to the mat, signaling the pin in the second period. When the final whistle blew, the Vanguards pulled out a well contended league win.
In JV action: Alex Kluka (119) went the distance and led the entire way to win by decision. Cody Lee (125) had a short evening with a second period pin. Jim Dantonio (130) was next and also pinned his challenger in the second period while Shane Brooks (135) pinned his opponent in the first period.

Josh Marquard breaks Sun Valley win record!
On Thursday, January 15, 2009, Josh Marquard recorded another win. What was different about this one? It marked the 106th win in Josh's career breaking the old record of 105 wins set by Willie Mack (2006 graduate). If you happen to see Josh around, make sure you congratulate him.

Sun Valley goes 4-1 at Conestoga 5 Star and brings home third place trophy
On Saturday, January 17, Sun Valley's wrestling competed in the Conestoga 5 Star Tournament, which includes teams from North Penn, Neshaminy, Conestoga, Unionville, West Chester Henderson and Central Bucks West. The Vanguards wrestled North Penn, Cardinal O'Hara, Conestoga, LaSalle and Neshaminy and ended up 4 - 1 on the day and finished in third place.
Match #1 - Sun Valley - 30 North Penn - 27
Dan Stover (119) put Sun Valley on the board with a hard fought decision victory. Jeff Chen (135) added three more points for Sun Valley with another decision win. With Sun Valley down 6 - 21 to North Penn, Sean Simon (152) started the rally which would put North Penn away with a never quit attitude and a come from behind decision triumph. Josh Marquard (160) didn't wait for the third period or even the second and pinned his foe in the first period. Shaun Lessik (171) brought Sun Valley to within three points of North Penn with a decision win. With the score still in favor of North Penn 18 - 21, Seth Snyder put the Vanguards ahead with a first period pin. Mike Redden (215) followed with a first period pin of his own to round out the scoring for Sun Valley and put the match away.
Match #2 - Sun Valley - 50 Cardinal O'Hara - 22
Vinny Oristaglio (119) accepted a forfeit win to get six points for the Vanguards. Jeff Chen (135) led the entire way, winning by a major decision. Matt Johnson (145) stopped his opponent early with a first period pin to tie the score at 16 - 16. Sean Simon (152) scored a third period tech fall to put Sun Valley up by five. Josh Marquard (160) also won by a tech fall in the third period. Shaun Lessik (171) took his opponent out with a second period pin and was followed by Mike Redden (189), Tyler Brun (215) and Dan Asebedo (103) who all accepted forfeit wins.
Match #3 - Sun Valley - 36 Conestoga - 30
With a lot of eyes on this match, Dan Stover (119) got things started with a quick first period pin to put Sun Valley up 6 - 0. Chuck Morgan (125) and Jeff Chen (130) both followed with gutsy decision wins making the score 12 - 0 in the Vanguards favor. Not a team to go down quietly, Conestoga came back to tie the score at 12 each. Matt Johnson (145) had a very interesting match. With Matt leading 5 - 1 after one and 11 - 1 after the second, his opponent became very frustrated and ended up with an unsportsmanship penalty then had the match stopped in the third period by the Conestoga coach for head butting by the Conestoga wrestler. This put Sun Valley back on top by a score of 18 - 12. Sean Simon (152) added three more with a grueling 2 - 0 decision win. Josh Marquard (160) put another six points on the board with a third period pin. Conestoga circled the wagons and mounted a comeback going up by a score of 26 - 30. Dan Asebedo (103) knotted the score at 30 - 30 with a major victory with only one match remaining. Vinny Oristaglio (112) nailed down the victory with a third period pin, giving the Vanguards the match win.
Match #4 - Sun Valley - 12 LaSalle - 48
With Sun Valley down in the team score, Chuck Morgan (130) controlled his match from the opening to the closing whistle, winning by decision. Jim Chen (140) was tied 0 - 0 after the second period, pulled out a 3 - 2 decision win. Sean Simon (152) scored two points late in the match to tie the score at 5 - 5 and head into overtime. With time running out, Sean scored a two-point takedown to win the match. Josh Marquard (160) was tied at 2 - 2 after the third period and also headed into overtime. Like Sean, Josh scored a two-point takedown in sudden victory overtime to take the win and end the scoring for Sun Valley for this match.
Match #5 - The battle for third: Sun Valley - 48 Neshaminy - 13
It was going to be interesting to see how these young men responded after suffering their first loss of the year. Boy, did they respond!
Chuck Morgan (130) started the show with a second period pin to put the Vans up 6 - 0. Jeff Chen (135) scored a decision win while Jim Chen (140) waited until there was literally less then one second in the third period to score with an escape and send the into overtime. Taking full advantage of the sudden victory overtime period, Jim scored two points with a takedown to win the match. With Neshaminy mounting a comeback, Josh Marquard (160) would win his 111th of his career with a third period tech fall. Shaun Lessik (189) would add six points to the Vanguard total with a second period pin. Mike Redden (215) outworked his opponent and came away with a decision victory. Tyler Brun (285) was again bumped up from his normal 215 pound weight class and wasted little time (42 seconds to be exact) in pinning his opponent in the first period for his first career varsity pin, despite giving up about 50 pounds. Dan Asebedo (103) was psyched by Tyler's win and took just slightly longer to pin his opponent, also in the first period. Vinny Oristaglio (112) took care of his challenger with a second period pin while Dan Stover (119) ended the scoring for Sun Valley with a major victory.
With the victory over Neshaminy, Sun Valley ended the day with the third place trophy. With teams of this caliber wrestling in this tournament, the Vanguards should hold their heads high, especially the way they came back from the first loss of the year when it would have been easy to get yourself down in the dumps. This team has a ton of character and is an extremely well rounded team. Congratulations again to the Sun Valley wrestling team and to the coaches for a great performance.
Next up for Sun Valley: possibly the District Duals on Thursday, 1/22 starting at 5:30 at Hatboro Horsham High School.
The Vanguard Invitational on Saturday, January 24, starting at 9:00 AM. Come out and support the team.

Sun Valley ties then breaks 24 year old team record!
When the 2008-09 Vanguards defeated Conestoga for their 18th victory of the year, they tied a 24-year-old record for most team wins in a season, which was set in 1984-85 season. Ending the 2007-08 season with 6 victories in a row and starting this year with 18 straight victories, Sun Valley's winning streak of 24 straight match wins was halted just short of the record of 26 straight wins over multiple seasons.
After overpowering Neshaminy, the 2008-09 Sun Valley Vanguard wrestling team broke the record for most wins in a season. This was the Vans 19th win of the season. Congratulations to the entire team as this takes an entire team working together to break a record of this nature. No one individual or even a couple of people working together can do this, it takes a total team commitment and a lot of hard work. Congratulate yourselves and feel good for what you have accomplished tonight and tomorrow, then forget about it and get back to working hard as there is still a lot of things to finish.

Congratulations to the team and to Dan, Dan and Josh.

Sun Valley goes 1-1 at District Duals
District Duals Match #1 - Sun Valley - 39 Harry S. Truman - 25
The first opponent Sun Valley (ranked #12 in District #1) would meet in the first round of the District Duals was Harry S. Truman High School (ranked #21 in District #1). With the Vanguards defeating Harry Truman in the Delco Duals earlier in the year by two points, they were wary but very confident coming into the match.
Sun Valley's two captains were the first two matches for the Vans and the captains started the ball rolling in the best possible way. Sean Simon (152) started things going the Valley way with a second period pin. Josh Marquard (160) followed with his own pin, this one in the first period. Seth Snyder (171) was trailing for most of the match, came on strong in the last thirty seconds to grab a decision victory to put Sun Valley up 15-0.
Shaun Lessik (189) led the entire way and secured another decision win for the feisty Vanguards. Paris Covington (285) took care of his opponent with a second period pin to keep the momentum in favor of the Blue and Gold. Vinny Oristaglio (112) didn't even work up a sweat as he pinned his foe in 55 seconds of the first period to put Sun Valley up 30-9. Dan Stover (125) took slightly longer as he pinned his opponent in the first period to put the match out of reach. Jeff Chen (135) rounded out the scoring for Sun Valley with a hard fought decision victory to seal the deal and send the Vanguards into the second round of the District Duals.
District Duals Match #2 - Sun Valley - 16 Council Rock North - 48
The Vanguards were next paired up against Council Rock North (ranked #5 in District 1). Council Rock is a perennial powerhouse from up north but the Vanguards did not back down and battled with everything they had. Every point that C.R. North got was earned, as Sun Valley gave nothing away.
Josh Marquard (160) was quick to subdue his challenger with a first period pin. Dan Stover (125) controlled his entire match and earned himself a major victory. Chuck Morgan (130) ended the scoring for Sun Valley with a pin in the second period. Sun Valley's wrestlers fought every second they were on the mat and the C.R. North wrestlers knew they had to work for their points. Nothing would come easy for the guys from "The Rock" tonight.
Congratulations to the Sun Valley wrestling team for being invited to wrestle in the prestigious District Duals and for being one of the top 12 teams in District 1. Hold your heads high because you have so much to be proud of.

Sun Valley places 9 out of 14 wrestlers in top 4 at Vanguard Invitational
Sun Valley’s wrestling team continues to impress and surprise people. Well, they don’t surprise anyone who is familiar with the team or anyone on the team. With 14 wrestlers from The Valley competing in the always tough and challenging Vanguard Invitational Tournament, nine of them placed fourth or better. The teams competing in this years tournament were St. Mark’s, Radnor, Sun Valley, Glen Mills, J.W. Robinson, Penncrest, Central Bucks South and Upper Darby.
J. W. Robinson is located in northern Virginia and is the high school that our own Coach “K” attended when he was in high school. When the final team points were announced, Sun Valley finished in third place behind Saint Mark’s (first place) and J.W. Robinson (second place).
The Vanguards had two wrestlers place first, one place second, two place third and four place fourth. Coming home with the gold medal for first place were Dan Stover (119) and Josh Marquard (160). Ending his day with a silver second place medal was Vinny Oristaglio (112). Chuck Morgan (125) and Sean Simon (152) finished with the third place bronze medals. Dan Asebedo (103), Jeff Chen (130), Shaun Lessik (171) and Mike Redden (189) all closed out the day in fourth place.
Finishing in third place in this tournament is something to be very proud of. This is a very tough tournament with quality teams being invited. The Sun Valley wrestling team and coaches are doing an excellent job and working extremely hard this year and it shows. When you are tired, work harder and continue pushing, it will pay off more than you can know right now.
Next up: Senior Night – festivities begin at 6:00 PM

Vanguards conquer Rams: Sun Valley - 31 Pennridge - 25
The Rams from Pennridge came down from way up north to take on the Vanguards. What a battle it was! Senior night at the Valley has never been so exciting. Boy, the seesaw out tonight and it was used all night. First Sun Valley was up, the Pennridge was up, then Sun Valley tied it, then Pennridge went back up. Sun Valley then tied it up and went ahead only to be tied again. Up and down, back and forth with neither team ever being up by more than six points.
Dan Stover (125) was the first match of the evening. Dan mastered his opponent taking a major decision win to put the Vanguards up 4-0. Pennridge came back to take a 4-10 lead until Jim Chen (140) posted a quick first period pin to knot the score at 10-10. With Sun Valley trailing, Josh Marquard (160) took to the mat and came away with a very hard-earned, decision win to bring Sun Valley to within three points of Pennridge. Seth Snyder (171) led the entire way and came away with a two-point decision win to tie the score at 16-16.
Shaun Lessik (189) put the Vanguards up by a score of 22-16 with a third period pin. With the score again tied, Paris Covington (275) worked for the entire six minutes and it paid off with a decision win to put Sun Valley up 25-22. Pennridge tied the score again at 25-25 with two matches to go. Mark Asebedo (112) was the first of the final two and twisted, turned, flipped and came out on top with a decision win to put the Vanguards up 28-25 with one match remaining. Vinny Oristaglio (119) was the final wrestler for the Blue and Gold of Sun Valley. Knowing what needed to be done, Vinny rose to the occasion. Vinny led the entire way and took a 7-3 decision win to seal the victory for Sun Valley.
On a night like this, it takes the entire team to pull together and work as one. If one person lost, the next one picks him up with a win while the person that lost is cheering you on, not sulking in a corner. That's what a team is and what a team does. What a team effort! Every single point was so important and every point was well earned.
In JV action:
Melissa Bailey (119) took her opponent the distance and came out on top with a decision victory. Cody Lee (130) dominated his challenger for a major victory. Shane Mullen (152) and Greg Kutys (189) both took care of their Rams with first period pins.
Next up: The Vanguards will visit West Chester Rustin on Wednesday, Feb. 4 starting at 6:30 PM

To the returning wrestlers that had their year end today, keep your heads up, work hard in the off season and come back and improve on this years team record. To the seniors that have finished their high school wrestling careers, a big THANK YOU for all you did for the team. Remember that you are leaving with three league championships that you helped create! Sun Valley Three-Peats
This article is better late than never.
Due to medical reasons, and for the protection of the wrestlers, the league decided to stop the season with only a few matches to go. So, on the strength of an outstanding wrestling year and being 4-0 in league matches (not 2-0 as has been reported in the Chester County Paper) Sun Valley has been declared co-champions of the Ches-Mont League along with Great Valley (who was 2-0 in league matches).
Congratulations to the Sun Valley Wrestling Team, Coaches, Managers and anyone who had anything to do with the team. Three in a row is something to be very proud of. All the hard work you did in practice has paid off, as you see.
To those wrestling in the off season, good luck and push yourselves. When you are tired and think you must stop, remember this - your opponent is feeling the same thing. All you have to do is keep yourself together, take a couple of deep breaths and carry on. You can do it!
To the wrestlers that have finished, good work and thank you for all you did for the team, work hard in the off season and go eat.

The Valley sends three wrestlers onto Regionals
With seven out of fourteen wrestlers securing a trip to the District Tournament, Josh Marquard (152), Sean Simon (160) and Mike Redden (215) have earned the right to represent the Vanguards next weekend at the Region 5 Wrestling Tournament to take place at Oxford High School.
Before the weekend was even here, Sun Valley was already down one wrestler as Vinny Oristaglio (112) had to withdrawal due to an injury. Dan Stover (119) opened up with a tough one point decision loss then proceeded to dominate his opponent in the next match to move on. In his third match, Dan dropped another gut wrenching, hard fought, leave it all on the mat one point decision.
Jeff Chen (135) commenced his district run by facing the top seed and eventual champion. Jeff wrestled competently but couldn't overcome his opponent. In his next match, Jeff gave his all and wrestled his heart out, as Jeff always does, but came up a little short at the end.
Josh Marquard (152) began his day with a major decision victory. Josh gave everything he had but it just wasn't enough as he lost a tough decision match to the eventual second place winner. For his third match, Josh took out his frustration and made it look easy as he easily bested his opponent with a major decision victory. The match for third place was a repeat of the match for first place at the Sectional Tournament. Holding nothing back, Josh put his opponent's shoulders to the mat for a third period pin, third place and a trip to Regions.
Sean Simon (160) started his march to States with a very tough opponent and lost a very tough match. Sean cranked up his never-say-die attitude and put everything he had into his next match, overwhelming his opponent with a major decision victory. Sean's third match was against the second place winner from last week's Sectional Tournament. Sean earned his way to the Regional Tournament next week with a well deserved and hard worked decision win.
Mike Redden (215) set off on his quest against the first place seed. Mike twisted, turned and twisted some more but it wasn't enough as dropped a tough one. Mike's next opponent was a familiar one from Academy Park. Not one to dwell on the past, Mike dominated his next opponent and moved on to the next round with a third period pin. To be able to make the trip to the Regional Tournament next week, Mike had to win his next match. Was he up to the task? Need you ask? Showing everyone what to do when your back is against the wall, Mike earned the trip to Oxford and the Regionals with a well wrestled decision victory.
Paris Covington also started his day by facing the top seed in his weight class. Doing his best and giving his all, Paris dropped a tough match to the eventual District Champion. Facing a very tough opponent from Pennsbury in his next match, Paris left everything he had on the mat but it was not to be as he lost a heart wrenching match by decision.
The Vanguards are still putting their stamp on the wrestling world with the quality wrestlers that are coming out of Sun Valley. Even though some wrestlers will not be moving on and have ended their year, they should hold their heads high as making the trip to Districts is nothing short of tremendous. Continue to work hard in the off season and come back next year ready to go.
To Mike, Sean and Josh, congratulations on making it through Sectionals and Districts and onto Regionals. Continue to work hard for at least one more week, you will see the rewards in more ways than you can imagine.
Next up: The Regional Tournament in Oxford next week. Come out and see some incredible wrestling and support your teammates.
Saturday, February 28
Sun Valley's record-breaking season comes to an end.
Josh Marquard (152), Sean Simon (160) and Mike Redden (215) were slated to begin competition in the Regional Finals. To get to this level takes an incredible amount of skill, strength, speed and heart. The wrestlers that are wrestling this late in the season are the best in the region. How good are they? The 152-pound bracket has a total win/loss record of 419/85 for an 83% winning record. The 160-pound bracket's win/loss record is 445/122 for a winning percentage of 79%. At 215 pounds, the win/loss record is 394/103 for a winning percentage of 79%.
Needless to say, these guys are good! If you make this level, you have every right to hold your head high. You are among the best of the region. Not many people can say they made it to regions. Be proud of your accomplishments and all the work you have done. The way this tournament works is if you win your first round, you wrestle again on Friday evening, if you lose, your next match is on Saturday, if you lose a second time, you are out of the tournament.
Wrestling at Oxford, in the new school was a treat. The gym is huge and allowed them to run six matches simultaneously. With that many mats going at the same time, you really had to pay attention to know when you wrestled. To Mike, Sean and Josh, when some time passes and you look back on this, think of this. There were 12 wrestlers in each of 14 weight classes wrestling in this tournament, that makes for 168 total wrestlers wrestling. How many wrestlers wrestle in the region? At least 1,000, so that makes you one of the best wrestlers in the region.
On Friday evening, Josh Marquard (152) started things off for the Vanguards. Wrestling against Joe Kent of Norristown, Josh moved onto the next round with a 3-2 decision victory. In the second round, Josh faced Nick Fushino, the number one seed of the weight class. Josh did everything he could but it was not to be as he lost by decision.
Sean Simon (160) faced Kevin Mallon (the eventual third place finisher) from Northeast Catholic in his opening match. Sean turned, flipped, spun and twisted but dropped a tough match by decision. Mike Redden (215) was wrestling Methacton wrestler Brandan Clark as his first opponent. Mike gave everything he had pushing the action and was always the aggressor in this match. Whatever Mike tried was thwarted by his opponent as Mike fell by decision.
On Saturday morning it was time to start the car's engine and make the 45-minute drive to Oxford for some more outstanding wrestling. First on the agenda today was Sean Simon (160) wrestling against John Hoch from West Chester Rustin. Always giving 110% and never quitting, pushing the action and leaving his heard on the mat, Sean ended up on the short end, dropping a heart breaking match by a single point.
Mike Redden (215) took the mat next and was the second Sun Valley wrestler to face an opponent from Northeast Catholic, Jeremy Reith With the match tied at 2, Mike put his foe on his back for what looked like two points for the blue and yellow of Sun Valley but it was not to be. One ref gave Mike the takedown but the other ref (there are two refs in these matches, one helps the other with match time, among other things) said that the time for the period expired and the two points Mike earned for the takedown were taken off the board. When the final buzzer rang, Mike fell by decision.
Josh Marquard (152) began his day in a match where he led the entire way, winning with a major decision win over Randy Haun from North Penn. Josh's next opponent was Nick Michaels from West Chester Rustin. When the ref blew his whistle signaling the end of the match, Josh had his hand raised in victory and another match to follow. As his third opponent of the day, Josh was facing off against Tim Feroe from Boyertown. These two were really going at it with each taking then losing the lead. It was a see-saw battle until the end as Josh lost a heart wrenching match.
When all is said and done, this has been an outstanding year for the Sun Valley Wrestling team. They have set a new team record for wins in a season with 21 and won both the Delco Duals and Octorara Duals. You came in second (an extremely close second) at the Radnor Holiday Tournament and captured third place at the always tough Conestoga 5 Star Tournament. You should congratulate yourselves on a job well done. Your dedication and hard work have paid off this year and will pay off next year, the year after and the year after that.
This Vanguard team has what it takes. Giving their all for the betterment of the team. Thinking TEAM first, not me first. People bumped up or down in weights whenever it was asked of them. In the practice room, you helped your workout partner become the best wrestler they could be even though you may have to wrestle them off for your spot. That is thinking of the team and not yourself. It will make for a better, tighter and more resilient team.
Just think of this, you have just won your third consecutive League Championship! How many teams can say that? Ending your final two years in the Del-Val League as number one and starting off in the Ches-Mont League with the championship is something to be very proud of.
To all the seniors who will be leaving us this year, WE WILL MISS YOU! You have been an inspiration to the entire team. To Dan Asebedo, Mark Asebedo, Josh Marquard, Chuck Morgan, Mike Redden and Sean Simon, good luck in all you do and always remember your time with the wrestling team. You have shown the underclassmen and women the way and you have left huge shoes to fill. With the determination and teamwork you have shown this year, you have what it takes to make a difference in the world. You all have to make one promise though, to come back and visit. Come back to cheer your teammates to onto victory.
To the wrestlers coming back, the seniors have shown you the way, it is now up to you. Work hard in the off season and come back ready to defend your crown. Now, everyone can have whatever you want for snack, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack, dessert and before bed, another snack.
To the coaches: Coach "K", Coach Dollard, Coach "PJ" and Willy (when your schedule allowed), thank you for all you have done this past year. For all the time you put in working with these young adults and helping to teach them responsibility and resilience.
To the managers: Thank you for everything you do. Yours is a thankless job but if it is not done, and done well, there will be chaos and turmoil.
To the parents: Thank you for helping out during the long season. If not for your help, things like the snack stand, tournament and banquet would be a disaster.
Have a great summer and we will see you in the fall.

2008-09 Banquet Recap
The end of a Record Breaking Season!
On Sunday, April 26, 2009 Sun Valley’s 21 win - record breaking season officially came to an end. The annual Wrestling banquet was held at the Aston-Beechwood Firehouse. Again, Aston-Beechwood came through with a beautiful hall in which to hold the banquet.
Parents and wrestlers again were entertained with a slide show produced by Tom Morgan consisting of pictures taken throughout the year of all the wrestlers during the year. As the show was running all through dinner, it was noted that many of the wrestlers were watching the show and not eating. More than a few laughs were heard as various pictures accompanied by well timed captions appeared on the screen.
Just before it was time to eat, Tom announced the coaches, their wives and special guests that were present. Tom then gave the blessing and it was off to the buffet table. The Italian Brothers Catering again did a magnificent job of cooking the food. They prepared a delicious buffet consisting of meatballs, stuffed chicken, green beans almandine, red bliss potatoes, chicken fingers, and an impressive amount of other choices.
After dinner and the cake which was made by Sinfully Delicious in Brookhaven it was on to the awards presentations. Coach “K” noted some of the accomplishments of this record breaking team. They are:

Coaches “K”, Dollard and Steininger gave flowers and letters to the managers: Megan Boccella, Morgan O’Rourke, Chey Hansen and Emily Mamola. All did a wonderful job and we hope the all come back next year. Without them, the team and meets would not run as smoothly as they do. Thank you young ladies one and all for all your hard work and all the hours you put in. You are also one of the reasons the team did as well as it did this year.
