Thunder History and Accomplishments

HistoryThe Thunder was established in the fall of 2002 in Sugar Land as a first year 12U under the name Sugar Land Thunder. The Thunder competed well during the fall attending several major tournaments which included the 12U Ronald McDonald.   By the summer of 2003 the Thunder was fast becoming a team to be reckoned with.  The Thunder qualified for and attended the USFA 12U Nationals in Panama City, FL. The fall 2003 the Thunder changed it’s name to the Third Coast Thunder. This was because the team was represented by players from throughout the Greater Houston and the Houston Gulf Coast. The summer of 2004 the Thunder made a few personnel changes and by the summer was one of the best 12U teams in the State of Texas. The Thunder racked up several state championships which included ASA, NFSA, 13U USSSA and runner up at the AFA state tournament. Thunder attended ASA national tournament in Moline, ILL where they finished in the top half.  The fall of 2004 the Thunder moved to 14U brought more success, the Thunder placed 3rd in the Ronald McDonald while again competing in several major fall tournaments. The summer of 2005 the Thunder won yet another state championship at the NFSA state tournament and went on to finish 2nd at the 2005 14U USFA national tournament in Biloxi, Mississippi. Prior to nationals the Thunder finished tied for 13th in the Colorado Fireworks. The fall of 2006 the Thunder made the jump to 16U play where the team competed in Ronald McDonald and other area 16U tournaments. Summer 07, the Thunder coaching staff decided to make the move into 18U. The Thunder played in and won the 2007 Houston ASA 18U Metro Tournament. The Thunder also played in the Colorado Sparkler where the team played in the platinum bracket and finishing tied for 33 out of nearly 300 teams. The Thunder had saw three senior players sign D1 letters of intent and go on and play softball at the collegiate level. Fall 2007 the Thunder gained entry in four of this nations most prestigious fall college showcase softball tournaments, the Rising Stars-Davie Fl; OC Batbusters-Orange County, California; Ronald McDonald-Spring, Texas and the Elite College Showcase in McKinney, Texas. By competing in such showcases the Thunder had three seniors sign at D1 universities and one at a NAIA (Houston Baptist University). The summer of 2007 brought even higher goals for the Thunder where team tried qualifying for the 18U ASA Gold National held in Oklahoma, Ok. The Thunder took a very young group of athletes competed in the sectors 2 and 3 qualifiers, the Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Ok. Hall of Fame complex and region 7 in Beaumont, Texas. Although the Thunder fell short in their attempt the experience was invaluable. The Thunder also for the first time competed in the 18U Colorado Fireworks in Aurora, Co. where over 200 college coaches were in attendance. The Thunder attended the 2007 AFA National Tournament in Beaumont, Texas where they finished tied for 1st in a rain shortened national tournament. (Co-AFA National Champs).
