Burlington Tournament Results (January '05)
Over 400 wrestlers descended on Burlington High School Sunday to compete in the Burlington Invitational Youth Wrestling Tournament. Teams from throughout Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island were in attendance including eleven members of the Sudbury Youth Wrestling team. Sixth grader Marc Pace started out with tough first round loss but rebounded with a dominating 10-4 win, setting up a third round match with teammate Nick Murphy. In a well-wrestled match, Pace took the win 10-6 propelling him into the consolation finals, a huge achievement in his first tournament. Third place was not to be for Sudbury's first year wrestler, losing to a far more experienced competitor from Salem, NH. Mikey Stein, a fifth grader from Sudbury, had early round troubles and lost a heartbreaking second round match on a late third period reversal forcing an early exit from the tournament. Both Sudbury seventh graders, Carter Mode and Owen O’Brien fell prey to high seeds in first round matches. O’Brien easily won his second match before dropping his third. Mode also lost his first but rebounded nicely with a second period pin over his opponent from Lowell. In his third round match, Carter controlled things throughout, coming away with a terrific 6-4 victory. Like Marc Pace before him, Mode was unable to keep the momentum and lost in the consolation finals to take home fourth place. Eighth grader Jordan Syatt had perhaps the match of the day for the squad. Paired up with the bracket's top seed, Syatt took control early and came away with a hard-earned 7-5 upset win. Unfortunately for Syatt, he was unable to advance to the medal round losing his next two matches. David Garelik, opened his tournament with an odd 4-2 loss. David, more familiar to freestyle then “folkstyle” wrestling scoring, controlled the match but was unable to score points. From there David was unstoppable, first a 15-0 technical fall, then a 7-0 win to propel him into the consi-finals. In a tightly fought affair, David scored a takedown in overtime assuring him third place, the best finish for a Sudbury 7th or 8th grader in three years. The day began with members of the Jr. Warrior squad taking the mat first in the K-2 round robin matches. Leading the way for Sudbury was "Big" Doug Hamel who dominated all three of his matches to capture first place. The Ferocious Feye Brothers - Alex and Russell - both won two of three for silver. Lastly, after a first round loss, Ryan "The Pinning Machine" Berardino came back to win his next two matches for second place. Congratulations to all the competitors!
