Orlando & Pennington Shine at Gold/Silver Tournament (February '03)
Lowell - All
Sunday saw over 300 of the best wrestlers from New Hampshire and Massachusetts descend upon Lowell HS, in search of the title of Big East champion. Ryan McCann and Jason Orlando wrestled in the Gold Tournament while Eric Pennington and Nate Putnam, wrestled in the Silver. Nate had the misfortune of lining up against the eventual third place finisher, dropping a decision in his first match of the day. Pushed down into the consolation bracket, Putnam dominated his Salem, NH opponent in his next match cruising to a 12-2 win. Unfortunately, Nate dropped his next match, eliminating him from the tournament. Ryan McCann had a similar fate. In spite of wrestling well, Ryan fell victim to two talented wrestlers from Acton-Boxborough and Timberlane (NH). Meanwhile Eric Pennington was cruising at 160 pounds. In his first match, Eric controlled the match from the onset before pinning his Derry, NH opponent early in the second period. Pennington was caught be surprise in his second match, and found himself trailing 2-0 after the first period. The lead for the Waltham grappler was short lived, however, as Eric scored a quick reversal and then a pin 20 seconds into the second period. With first place in sight, only a Woburn wrestler stood in the way. This time Eric took no chances, controlling the match from the start, notching his third straight pin for first place. Jason Orlando was seeded first in the 180 pound division. In the semi-final match, Jason squared off against a tall, athletic wrestler from Wilmington. The match was tight throughout, but Orlando proved to be the better wrestler and advanced to the finals. Jason faced off against a very aggressive wrestler from Hollis, NH who was able to take advantage of Orlando’s inexperience to win the match. Jason’s second place represented the highest placement of any Sudbury wrestler since the Youth Program began two years ago.
