Warriors Take Fifth In Wayland (February '03)
On February 8th, the Warriors traveled to Wayland to compete in the Elite/Select Tournament against 25 other Eastern Mass. towns. The 3-week tournament concluded on February 15 & 16 at Lowell High School, with over 550 wrestlers from over 50 Massachusetts and New Hampshire towns competing for individual and team trophies. In Wayland, the Warriors were once again lead by Curtis MS 8th graders Peter Ruymann and Jason Orlando wrestling in the Elite section. Ruymann had the misfortune of being placed in the 130 pound weight class, arguably the toughest bracket of the tourney. However, that didn’t prevent Peter from advancing to the finals after rolling up his North Andover opponent for a second period pin in his first match and then cruising to a 7-1 victory in his second. In the finals, Peter faced Natick’s Vinnie Napoleon, one of the top youth wrestlers in New England. Peter took the match to Vinnie, but was unable to best the more experienced Natick wrestler, giving Peter a well-earned silver medal. Jason Orlando came into Wayland with only one loss on the season, to a 254 pound A-B heavyweight earlier in January. The week before, Jason rolled to gold at the Regional tournament with three quick pins. In his first match, Jason controlled the match from the onset, coming away with a dominating 6-0 win. His second match was tied up at 2-2 heading into the third period, knowing that a shot at the final was at stake; Jason hit a beautiful single-leg takedown with 30 seconds left and held on for a 4-2 win. With most of the crowd watching, Jason had no trouble in the finals, with a dominating 13-2 victory to take the gold at the 180 pound bracket. In the Select section, the young Warriors continued their fine showing, with a solid fifth place team finish. Will Binder lost a heartbreaker in the finals, but still walked away with a silver medal. Chris Stoll won a thrilling 11-7 match to also secure second place at 65 pounds. Jeff Iuliano recovered from a tough second round loss, winning his next two matches to take a bronze. Devin Acton also recovered from an early loss, winning his next two, including a 16-6 victory in the consolation finals to take third place. Also contributing important team points were Chris Sniger, Lee Syatt and Chris Keating.
