Warriors Capture Second at Regionals (February '03)

In only its second year, the Sudbury Youth Wrestling team marched into Natick High School last Saturday capturing second place in the Big East Middle School Regional Tournament. Lead by gold medals from Jason Orlando, Eric Pennington, Peter Ruymann and Jeff Newton, the Warriors shocked more experienced clubs, including squads from Wayland, Acton-Boxborough, Dedham, Weymouth and Wellesley to finish behind Natick. Leading the way for Sudbury was Jason Orlando. In only his first year of wrestling, Jason overwhelmed the competition with three pins in the 180 pound division on his way to the gold. Sudbury’s 160-pounder, Eric Pennington, went into the tourney brimming with confidence and delivered on his pre-tournament predictions. Forced to go the full three periods for the first time this year, Eric seized gold with a 6-1 win over a far more experienced wrestler from Natick in the finals. Peter Ruymann., wrestling in the highly competitive 125 pound division, also went undefeated, including a tight 2-0 win over another Natick wrestler in his final. Fifth grader Jeff Newton, another Sudbury first year grappler, captured the fourth Sudbury gold, pinning his opponent from West Roxbury in the finals of the 115 pound division. Additionally, Jesse Smith took silver, narrowly missing out on gold with a tough last second loss in the finals. Rounding out the team scoring for the Warriors and contributing key points were fourth place finishes from Peter Salvia, Neil Greene, Jeff Iuliano, Mike Pace, Ryan McCann, Jonathan Nichols, Nate Putnam and Mike Gigliotti.
