Thank you to everyone that was able to take time out of you busy schedules to attend the Grade 5-8 Parent's Meeting. Here were the key points discussed:
Congratulations to Ben Defronzo for qualifying for the upcoming New England Youth Championships. Ben battled to second place finish in the 77 pound weight class. Zach Bloom just missed a spot as well, dropping a heart breaking 2-0 loss in the consi-finals to finish 4th in the 32-man bracket. Also wrestling extremely well, but finishing out of contention were Nolan Flagg and Joe Rottman.
Congratulations to all the wrestlers who participated in the Big East Finals at Tyngsborough and Melrose on February 9th and 10th. We had a record turnout with 28 wrestlers participating in the Melrose tournament and our best team results in the 7 year history of the Club.
Great job to everyone who participated.
The Sudbury Youth Wrestling team participated in the annual Big East Regionals Sunday at Nashoba Regional HS. Twenty teams and over 400 wrestlers attended the tournament that saw Sudbury outscore all but the team to finish in second place. Wrestlers are assigned to separate divisions based on experience and ability (Novice Select and Elite) and then further divided by weight and age
The second place finish was a complete team effort with 28 Sudbury wrestlers contributing to the final result. The team was lead by exceptional performances from first-year wrestlers Forrest Sisk and Chris Giorgio, who in spite of their limited experience, each won 3 of 4 matches to finish first and second in their highly competitive Select group brackets. Team captain Ricky Antonellis took third place in the ultra-competitive Elite group, barely missing out on a third win when a last second takedown was ruled to have taken place after time had expired. Younger brother Timmy Antonellis showed he would be a wrestler to contend with in the upcoming years with two wins and a third place finish, wrestling in only his second tournament.
There were a number of outstanding performances submitted by Sudbury fifth graders including Ryan Berardino (3 wins), Cameron Hyde (3 wins), Russell Feye (2 wins) and Brian Bakerman (2 wins). Feye’s third match of the day went back and forth before he lost a heartbreaker in overtime. The sixth grade contingent was paced by Alec Melamut who rolled through his novice bracket with four dominating wins and Brian Lewis who chipped in with 2 victories.
Also contributing valuable team points were Chris Broecker, Ben Defronzo, Jake Galligani, Joe Rottman, Dan Murphy and Nolan Flagg.
The team will be traveling to Melrose HS this Sunday for the Big East Finals where the best wrestlers from around the state will converge to compete.
