Stunnerz Youth Baseball has provided an option for inner city youth of West Contra Costa County, to excel at the highest level of competitive youth baseball. The term "inner city" usually conjures up images of dilapidated buildings on crime-ridden streets, and when referring to "inner city youth", most think of kids that have nothing else to do but hang around on those streets and get into trouble.
Rob Barquis had a different idea. His inner city image is filled with well-read youngsters spending their extra time on the local ball fields, grooming themselves for successful careers and lives. Born in Oakland, and raised in the rough "iron triangle" of Richmond, California, Rob witnessed first-hand, how very few opportunities were available for the youth of his neighborhood, including the chance to compete at the highest level of youth baseball.
In 2001, he founded STUNNERZ YOUTH BASEBALL. Since 2002, SYB has competed in tournaments throughout the state of California, winning State Championships with USSSA and Super Series Baseball. With the help and generosity of local business like Kaiser and Richmond Sanitary, they have also been able to take their talents throughout the country, competing in the most prestigious national youth baseball tournaments.
But it's about more than baseball. The program has a readership program that requires players to read an hour a day, and brings in guest motivational speakers, not only from the sports world, but from the world of business, to speak to about their thoughts on success. In addition to its self-empowerment programs, SYB also promotes team activities with volunteer events and community outreach programs at various levels. SYB is proud to announce that many of our former players have been able to take what they have learned with us to D1 College programs, and continue to work towards having successful lives, and being active in the community.
We cherish the business community’s assistance to allow our
program to be a success.
