2009 St. Thomas Soccer Team Successful Thanks To You!

The 2009 St. Thomas Tigers soccer season has come to an end. It's success was dependent on a number of people. The Tigers soccer team would like the thank the following people for making this season successful:

  • The players themselves. They took the time to commit themselves to their school team. We play as a team with pride representing the best school in Southington, St. Thomas.
  • Thank you to the parents of the players. Thank you for allowing your child to play soccer for St. Thomas. The players attitudes, sportsmanship, desire to learn, and desire to get better can be coached and guided. However, it has to start somewhere. That somewhere is at home and handed down from you, the parents. A big thanks to all of you!
  • Thank you to Father Nick, Jean, Mrs. Wirkus, and Mr. Hergott for their continued support of the St. Thomas soccer program. The work behind the scenes doesn't get recognized too often. We would like to let you know that we appreciate what you have done to help make this program successful!
  • Mr. Condren, thank you for all you do with making sure the field is ready to play each season. Mr. C can be found a couple times a week outside after school lining the field. Recognizing that Mr. C does this for the kids and the school...we once again want to thank him for this! Oh, and we can't forget to thank him for being our guest juggler this year for the juggling contest! He got "22"!
  • Thank you Ceil Morelli! Ceil has done so much for this program that goes unrecognized. She has been chaperoning the gym for home games while Coach Shea and the 8th graders set up the field (putting up the nets and flags). She has coordinated the orange slice list among parents. She got some of the cheerleaders to come out for Tiger Pride game. She has chaperoned the juggling contest, when we walked over for ice cream. She has put together a picture board of the soccer program in the hallway. She has taken the team picture. We're sure we are leaving something unsaid....she has done so much. Thank you Mrs. Morelli!
  • Thank you Mrs. Morrisey for being there at the right time on the juggling contest day.  When we found the local ice cream establishment closed for the season, Mrs. Morrisey arrived just in time.  She took the orders down and drove over to another establishment to get the ice cream.  PHEW!!!!  Thank you Mrs. Morrisey!
  • To all of our fans who have come out to watch us play! So many teachers, along with Father Nick and Mrs. Wirkus have come out to support us. So many parents, getting out of work early (when possible) to watch the team play! We really appreciate all of your support!
  • Our team captain, Laurel. The players respected and followed the path led by Laurel. She helped the younger players when they needed it and led the team on and off the field for each practice and game.
  • Our senior class of 8th graders. Thank you to Zachary, Charlie, Laurel, Thomas, Adrian H., Nick and Sarah. Most of these players have been with this team for four years. They have progressed and improved over these years. Their time with the team has created many memories for St. Thomas Soccer. They will all be missed! We thank them for their time and hard work put into this program.  We wish them the best of luck as they enter the next phase of their lives.  The future is bright with these seven students on their way to make a positive impact!

Well, that's it for now.  Please be sure to check out some of the pictures taken during the season.  The website will update photo's from this season within the next couple weeks. We wish you a Happy Holiday season.  Until next season......GO TIGERS!

St. Thomas Finishes Season By Winning Third In A Row

On the banks of Long Island Sound with the city of New Haven as a backdrop, the St. Thomas Tigers took on St. Francis.  This was the last game of the season for the Tigers.  The most unfortunate part was the loss of several players to the flu and other "bugs" going around town.  Several players stepped up today for the Tigers.  Michael led the pace for the Tigers and set up the first goal, scored by Garrett.  Zachary played a big part in taking all the corner kicks today for the Tigers and made several crosses from the right side of the field.  Michael again found an open player and this time Anthony scored his first goal for St. Thomas.  There was solid play on defense in the first half led by Max, Kim, Chris and Sarah.  Alyssa started in goal.   Anthony and Cynthia played well together up top, several give and goes completed the next two goals.  Cynthia scored from the left side and then set up Anthony for his second goal of the game.  Nick, just getting over being sick and nursing an injury took on the goalkeeping duties for the second half.  St. Francis battled back and capitalized on a mistake back on defense.  But the Tigers battled back. Kate played a personal best game of the season. At one point, she hustled from the right side all the way over to the left as a St. Francis attacker was about to take a shot.  She got in his way and made a nice tackle.  Adrian S. got some more playing time today and really made some good plays.  Garrett was not done and made a nice move on a defender and then pounded the ball into th back of the net for the fifth goal of the game.  The whistle blew and the St. Thomas season came to a conclusion.  The team gathered by the bench with the lights of New Haven at their backs as the coach thanked them for a great and memorable season.   Stay tuned tomorrow for the thank you's of the season.

Tigers Shut Out St. Stanislaus
Meriden was the location for today's game against St. Stanislaus.  The St. Thomas Tigers came out strong with couple goals by Michael to start.  Sarah and Chris stepped up on defense for the Tigers.  Both Alyssa and Zachary provided strong goalkeeping for the Tigers.  Max provided some good opportunities for the Tigers up front for St. Thomas.  Charlie continued to play some great soccer with some nice moves and scoring with a nice shot on goal.  Sean also displayed some nice moves on defense, beating pressure each time it was put on him. The offensive attack was led by Bryan and Cynthia, who are always giving their all on the field.  Alyssa moved to the forward role for St. Thomas and got her first goal as a Tiger!    The St. Thomas Tigers got the shut out today.  They march on to the final game of the season next Tuesday when they take on St. Francis of New Haven.

St Thomas Gets The Win At The Tiger Pride Game
The annual Tiger Pride game was hyped up like never before, but there was one thing in the way (unexpected).......the weather.  The temperatures dropped down into the upper 40's and the rain moved in.  That didn't stop some of the brave parents, teachers and fans from attending.  Mrs. Peshka even brought Bella...but we weren't sure who was keeping who warm. A few of the St. Thomas Cheerleaders arrived and could be heard nice and loud.  The referee blew the whistle and the game against St. Stephens of Hamden was on.  Both teams started off strong with field play moving back and forth.  Laurel had a tough task of staying close with a quick, fantastic striker for St. Stephens.  She broke up many plays to keep the shots on goal down.  St. Stephens was able to capitalize first with a goal.   Cynthia and Anthony played hard and took on players twice their size with determination. A hand ball was called in the box and Joey was able to capitalize with a penalty kick to tie it for the Tigers.  Adrian H, Garret and Alyssa continued to play strong defensively.  Anthony made a nice pass out to Joey to score again!  The Tigers were now up.  Michael played solidly in the midfield, while Kate and Caleigh got acquainted with the left forward position during the game.  A deflection of Gregory's shin guard laid the ball out perfectly for Joey who connected for a hat trick.    In the second half, Max continued in goal.  This was Max's first game back for the Tigers after an injury in the beginning of the season.  His communication on the field was second to none.  Bryan returned too and was a influence in the midfield, he broke away and scored for the Tigers.  St. Stephens got a goal back.  The Tigers were not done. Joey wouldn't settle for three goals today, he charged for another and was successful in connecting for his fourth goal of the game.  The Tiger Pride Game wasn't pretty.....weather wise, but the Tigers put on a nice performance today for the win.

Tiger Pride Game Countdown....One Day
The annual Tiger Pride soccer game will take place tomorrow, on Tuesday October 27th.  All parents, relatives, students of the school, faculty, former players, and guests are welcome to come out to root on the Tigers as they take on St. Stephens of Hamden.  St. Stephens was victorious for the first meeting and now St. Thomas is hoping to equalize with a victory at the Tiger Pride Game.   A free raffle will take place at half time for a brand new soccer ball.  Additionally, face painting will take place prior to the game.  St. Thomas Art Teacher Mr Z., along with Rachel D. will be doing the face painting.  Tiger paw prints will look cool on you...don't you think?  The St. Thomas Soccer Team has worked hard all season.  This is the last home game for the Tigers and they would like your support, they deserve it!  Game time is 3:30pm right behind St. Thomas.  Come a little early for the face painting and enjoy a really good game of soccer.

Juggling Contest Complete
On Friday, October 23rd, the St. Thomas soccer team held their annual juggling contest.  Each year, each player's juggling score is recorded at the beggining of the season.  The players practice their juggling throughout the season.  At the end of the season, each player has to beat their original score.  Or, they have to beat a mystery guests score, whichever is higher.  The mystery guest is normally a teacher at St. Thomas.  This year's mystery guest was Mr. Condren.  Mr. C is a former soccer coach himself......but forgot what juggling was all about when he started juggling the soccer ball with his hands.  After the players corrected him, Mr. C started juggling and most players were shocked to see Mr. C warm-up with juggling twenty something touches.  Fortunately, all the students were able to beat the high score.  Therefore, Coach Shea bought them all ice cream for their success.  Thumbs up to the St. Thomas Tigers soccer team for successfully accomplishing this.

St Thomas Visits St. Stephens
On a Indian summer day, with highs around seventy five degrees, the St. Thomas Tigers traveled to back to Moretti Field in Hamden to take on St. Stephens.  This was the first meeting of the season for the two teams.  St. Thomas, looking to continue another winning streak met a tough opponent on this day.  With six players out for the Tigers, Coach Shea tinkered with the line-up.  It looked as if the changes were going to pay off at first.  Cynthia settled in nicely back on defense.   Kim moved out from defense with hopes of capturing her first goal as a Tiger.  At top, Garrett moved to a new role at forward.  With some nice passing, finding space, and creating opportunities the Tigers were able get on the board with a goal from Michael.   Michael, joined the team at the halfway point of the season and has settled in nicely with his teammates.  St. Thomas then made a few mistakes with losing their shape on defense and not covering the middle of the box and St. Stephens took advantage of that.  Up top, a few scoring opportunities were squandered with a few offsides calls going in favor of St. Stephens.  If you were wondering...no, Coach Shea didn't have hair prior to these offsides calls.  The Tigers tried to overcome and conquer as momemtum built up for the Tigers.  Charlie made a very nice run beating defenders and scoring for the Tigers.  Chris impressed the coach with his defensive role today.  Sarah also was aggressive and determined to help St. Thomas.  Charlie didn't stop, he was determined to score again, and did for the Tigers.  Alyssa made some fantastic saves at the end of the game.  Unfortunately, mistakes hurt the Tigers today.  The good thing is, we can all learn from our mistakes.  The Tigers take on St. Stephens again next Tuesday in their last home game of the season.

St. Thomas Shuts Out St. Francis
The Tigers welcomed St. Francis to Southington for their first meeting.  Charlie started off in goal for the Tigers.  Gregory and Michael led the attack for the Tigers.  Kate and Karina impressed Coach by stepping up a level today.  St. Francis was called for a handball in the box.  Michael took the penalty kick and converted for the first goal.  Tommy and Chris got some opportunities on the field to keep the Tigers attacking.  Nick made a nice shot and scored a second goal for St. Thomas.  In the second half, Zachary moved into goalkeeper role for the Tigers.  The wonder twins Sean and Alyssa celebrated their birthday by playing foward, hoping to score.  Kim just missed a goal for the Tigers.  Michael completed the shut out by scoring his second goal of the game.  It was a nice win for the Tigers.

St. Rita's Stops St. Thomas Winning Streak
St. Thomas traveled to Hamden to take on St. Rita's.  The top ranked St. Rita's displayed why they are at the top this season.  Physically outmatched, St. Thomas held their ground but heavy mistakes allowed multiple goals to be scored against St. Thomas.  The Tigers were able to create some opportunities.  Joey had a few missed shot's on goal but was able to deliver.  Michael made his debut game for the Tigers and provided a good effort. Zachary, Kim, and Garrett continued to play strong. Laurel picked up the pace and stopped several break aways. The younger Tigers, Cynthia, Owen, Anthony, Caliegh and Gregory all played key roles.  Eventually these players will be the future of the Tigers down the road.

ICEBOWL 2 - A CHILLER
"Fair is foul, and foul is fair."  Today, the second annual ice bowl was held.  The St. Thomas Tigers intersquad scrimmage started off with snow flakes falling upon the field. Zach led the Orange team of Adrian H, Owen, Karina, & Kate versus the red team led by Sarah that included Laurel, Alyssa, Caleigh and Coach.  The temperatures hovered in the 40's with the wind chill bringing it down further. Owen's nutmeg on Coach  help put Orange on the board.  Sarah worked hard to get the ball up the field for the Red, only to find Kate bringing it back down and setting up the second goal scored by Zach.  The score went back and forth with time ticking away it was 4-4 and the next goal to win it all.  Alyssa blasted the last shot of the game and the the winning shot for the Red team, helping them win 5-4.  That marked the end of the second annual IceBowl.  "What's done is done".

St. Thomas Takes One Back from Holy Trinity
On a blustery day, the Tigers of St. Thomas took on Holy Trinity.  A hand ball was called on the Tigers within the first five minutes of the game and Holy Trinity quickly took the lead.  They continued to play well, but Casey was able to quickly strike back with a goal for the Tigers.  Adrian played a good game on defense.  Alyssa, once again, was strong in goal.  Laurel, returned from an injury, and helped Nick and Kim lead the defense.  Sean and Kate played a key role on both defense and midfield during the game.  Holy Trinity was able to take a 3-1 lead.  But the will to continue to claw back is in the DNA of the Tigers.  Zachary made some key plays to help set up Casey, as Casey hit the net four more times!  The whistle blew and St. Thomas once again left their home field with the win.

St. Thomas Get's The Win Over St. Stanislaus

St. Thomas was victorious over St. Stanislaus of Meriden today.  The home game went well for the Tigers.  Joey was able to strike on a penalty kick early in the first half.  Zach and Sarah both stepped up their game to help back on defense.  Kim and Nick both continued to play solidly too.  Alyssa made some key saves for the Tigers.  Joey knocked in a couple more for a hat trick.  But that wouldn't be it as Owen recorded a goal also.  Bryan and Garrett continued to play strong in the midfield.

St.Thomas-St. Bridgets Battle To The Final Seconds
The St. Thomas Tigers welcomed St. Bridgets to Southington on this cool and cloudy day.  St. Bridgets came into this game without conceding a goal this season.  St. Thomas was determined to change this and that they did!  Joey made a great shot and scored for St. Thomas early in the first half.   Casey and Anthony led the midfield attack for the Tigers.  Laurel, Kim, Bryan and Nick did a fantastic job on defense.  Owen and Joey led the attack at the top and Alyssa, who just keeps getting better and better, was solid in goal.  Unfortunately, a handball was called in the box on St. Thomas and St. Bridgets was able to connect to tie it up.  At half time, both teams were tied 1-1.  Former St. Thomas player, Eddie was in attendance and commented that the Tigers looked really good today.  The second half was on.  St. Bridget's connected to go up early.   After that, they struck again.  The Tigers never gave up and hung on strong.  With ten minutes left in the game, Joey made a cross to Bryan and Anthony.  Bryan connected with a shot on goal.  Momemtum was building up to that and carried over.  The same play and the same result occured.  A cross from Joey and a shot from Bryan.  We were all tied up now, 3-3.  With less than 90 seconds left in the game, the unfortunate occured.  Both teams were in "hurry-up" mode sensing the time running out.  The ball was played on the right, outside of the goal.  The ball rolled out of bounds over the end line and St. Thomas grabbed it quickly to get it back to Alyssa for a goal kick.  A St. Bridget's player yelled  hand ball and the referee then blew his whistle.  A devestating and most controversial call against the Tigers.  This call would be fatal as St. Bridget's connected.  The whistle was blown and the game over.  St. Bridget's would get the win 4-3.  A controversial call ended this game today, but St. Thomas should hold their heads up for a well played game.

St. Thomas Battles St. Anthony's
The St. Thomas Tigers  traveled to Bristol and got on the board early when Anthony made a great pass to Nick who took a great shot to score.  St. Anthony's battled back and scored an equalizer.  Adrian H. saw a lot of action defending on the right side and broke up several attacks.  Both Karina and Cayleigh showed the coach what the future looks like by putting on a good display of their skills.  St. Anthony's went up 2-1 when a hand ball was called on the Tigers in the box.  A successful penalty kick was the result. St. Thomas was not done though and put the pressure on St. Anthony's.  Cynthia and Anthony made some great passes to Zachary.  Zachary's luck was left behind on this day as he missed a few "just missed" opportunities.  Coach was happy that Zach found his position each time.  Then the equalizer occured when Anthony found Cynthia and she tied it for St. Thomas.  Sean worked hard out there to try and make something happen, but time ran out and St. Thomas and St. Anthony's walked off the field with a 2-2 result.

St. Rita's Makes Come Back
The Tigers welcomed St. Rita's at St. Thomas for their first of two meetings this season.  The Tigers attacked early and dominated the early play.  The Tigers made some nice passing combinations between Owen, Anthony, Joey, and Charlie.  Joey powered his way through to receive a pass and strike first for the Tigers.  This was the first game the Tigers scored first this season. St. Rita's had some outstanding players on their team.  The transition hurt the Tigers as St. Rita's was able to out number the Tigers on several attempts on goal.  Eventually, this caught up to the Tigers and St. Rita's was able move ahead.  Several counterattacks were made and Joey was able to add a couple more for the Tigers.  Kim broke up a lot of attacks and played an outstanding game.  The Tigers are looking forward to the rematch with St. Rita's.

St. Thomas Takes On Holy Trinity
St. Thomas, played it's first game of the season against Holy Trinity in Wallingford.  The young St. Thomas team played strong.  Numerous first year players played key roles for the Tigers.  Owen and Anthony quickly stepped in roles that were previously held by those that moved on to their High School teams.  Cayleigh celebrated a birthday by beating two defenders and setting up fellow first year teammate Max for another goal.  Charlie added a third goal for the Tigers.  Time ran out and Holy Trinity was able to keep the lead for the win.
