Thursday, September 14 Athletic Overview Mens and womens varsity sports at St. Thomas offer a winning combination -- conference, regional and national athletic excellence on the playing field, and outstanding academic achievement on campus. Through the universitys memberships in both the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and Division III of the NCAA, its student-athletes compete in 11 mens and 11 womens varsity sports. St. Thomas has won a conference-best 310 all-time MIAC team championships, including playoffs. UST has won 36 MIAC regular-season championships in the last four years, including six in 2004-05 when it had top-three finishes in 17 of the 22 sports in which it competed and also won playoff titles in baseball, softball and mens hockey. In the last four seasons, the Tommies have qualified for MIAC postseason playoffs a conference-best 28 of a possible 30 times in hockey, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball. Terry Skrypek (mens hockey) and John Tschida (softball) were named Division III Coaches of the Year in 2005 -- the sixth and seventh national coach awards for St. Thomas in the last 15 years. Seven different St. Thomas coaches have been voted MIAC Coach of the Year in their sports in the last three seasons. In the MIAC All-Sports Championship competition, the St. Thomas men have won 19 of the last 25 years (first or second 30 seasons of the past 33 seasons), while the women have won 15 of the last 20 seasons. St. Thomas student-athletes won All-American honors 22 times in 2004-05. The Tommies have averaged 17 All-Americans each school year since 1997. In the 10-year history of the national Directors Cup competition, St. Thomas has placed in the top 40 each year among nearly 400 Division III institutions for its combined mens and womens national-meet finishes. The Tommies were among an elite group of 10 Division III institutions with top-25 placings in each of the first seven years. St. Thomas 11 NCAA team championships won over the last 23 years nearly equals the combined total won by the 12 other MIAC schools. St. Thomas teams also have nine NCAA runner-up finishes. St. Thomas is one of eight NCAA Division III institutions to win a national team championship in six different sports. The athletic program places a high emphasis on academic excellence. St. Thomas athletes received CoSIDA Academic All-Americans six times in 2001-02 and six times in 2002-03 tying a conference record. The Tommies have had 33 Academic All-Americans in the last 15 years, including 22 in the last five years. Many others have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, including two in 1997-98 and two in 2002-03. In four of the last 10 years, a St. Thomas student-athlete has been selected NCAA Woman of the Year from Minnesota, beating nominees from nearly 20 other in-state institutions. At St. Thomas, each student-athlete and sport is essential. None is treated as minor. The result is demonstrated by the universitys record of athletic excellence.
