Summer Rookie League

A learning league that stresses fun, good attitudes and fundamentals, in that order. This instructional league was formed and created by the area baseball legend, Dennis Denning.
Everyone plays games and receives baseball instruction each day by college coaches & players.

BASEBALL
Rookie League-Minors

WHO:
Boys currently in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in 2007-2008
WHEN:
1st Session (morning) 9:15 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. American League
2nd Session (afternoon) 1:00 p.m.- 3:15 p.m. National League

Mondays and Wednesdays: June 16, 18, 23, 25; July 7, 9, 14, 16, 21

July 21 = Championship Day includes contests, picnic & prizes
There are two different leagues for this age group and parents may select one or the other, however, on Championship Day, Sessions 1 & 2 both meet at 9:15 a.m. and go until noon.

Championship Day also includes contests and prizes (Fastest Runners, Strongest Arms, Most Accurate Throw, Longest Throw, HR Contest and Games and a Picnic with Hot Dogs, Pop, and Cookies)

Rookie League Majors

WHO:
Boys currently in 5th, 6th and 7th grades in 2007-2008

WHEN:

9:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays June 17, 19, 24, 26; July 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 (championship day)
July 22 = Championship & Picnic Day which lasts until Noon

I/we give my/our permission for __________________ to play in the John Tschida Baseball & Softball Summer Rookie Leagues. He/she is healthy and under no physical restrictions. I/ we know that participation in baseball and softball may result in serious injuries and protective equipment does not prevent all injuries to players, and do hereby waive, release, absolve, indemnify, and agree to hold harmless, Cheetah?s Championship Softball & Baseball, Inc., the University of St. Thomas, the organizers, sponsors, supervisors, participants and persons transporting my/our child to and from activities from any covered by accident or liability insurance.


LEAGUE FORMATS:

? All games played at McCarthy Fields, University of St. Thomas on corner of Grand and Cretin
? 12 players to a team
? All play every position each day and rotate in order from inning to inning
? Use pitching machines and safety balls (promotes offense and gives a lot of action for fielders)
? Instruction every day on a different fundamental with college coaches and players
? Fundamental topics include: pitching, base running, hitting, fielding, throwing, situations, outfield play, infield play)
? Learning league that stresses fun, good attitudes and fundamentals - in that order.
? Fee is $160 for the summer which includes a jersey, hat and on-line sign-up.
? Prizes and awards are given throughout the summer

Applicants will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. You can pre-register by filling out the application below and mailing it with a $160 check to John Tschida, 406 Duke Street, St. Paul, MN 55102. Make checks payable to Cheetah's Championship Softball & Baseball, Inc. Because of the numbers, we encourage you to sign up early.

Dates – (All Sunday Nights) Dec. 9, 30; Jan. 6, 20, 27

HITTING Grades 7-12:
Session #1: 1:30-3:30

Or Session #2: 3:45-5:45


PITCHING & CATCHING Grades: 9-12:
Session #3: 6:30-8:30


On Sunday, December 30th, we will have sessions 1-3 all meet in the Coughlin Fieldhouse, located on the corner of Cretin and Summit and will be going over defensive skills and offensive skills. The pitchers & catchers will start at 5:00 p.m. and go until 8:00. The hitters will go from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

CHAMPIONSHIP SOFTBALL CLINIC
An excellent opportunity for fastpitch players to get expert insturction in the following areas:

What is Covered:
- Pitching Topics:
Fundamentals
Velocity development and ability to change speeds
Control development
Movement (rise, drop, change, curve)
Become a pitcher rather than a thrower
Various workout programs
Proper arm care
Charting
Fielding your position (comebackers and bunts)

- Catching:
Fundamentals of framing

Throwing & Pickoffs

Plays at the plate

- Hitting:
Fundamentals of the stance, trigger, stride, swing, follow through
Hitting inside and outside pitches

TRANSPORTATION:
Campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp.

WHAT TO BRING:
Bring batting gloves, catching gear, bat, fielding gloves, and non-marking shoes. Please label all of your belongings.


DIRECTIONS
The University of St. Thomas' McCarthy Gym is located 1.5 miles south of I-94 at the corner of Grand and Cretin Avenue in St. Paul (two blocks south of the UST football stadium). The Coughlan Fieldhouse is located on the corner of Summit and Cretin (1 block North of McCarthy Gym).

COST
The fee for this clinic is $150 per group (Hitting group 1, Hitting group 2, pitching group, catching group). Each group will meet 5 times.
