NVSC STRYKERS:History/Honors

Here you will find the complete history of this team by season, all the way back to June 1997, when these guys were U7. It includes the evolution of the coaching of the team, as well as the transition from small sided, to full size 11 v 11, including the history of the 2 teams whose players made up the bulk of the first 11 v 11 roster.

Enjoy

Strykers Story
After all these years, we have have finished up as a team.  We ended up with 13 Tournament Championships, and 7 Finalists and 5 Quarter Finals in State Cup Play. We had an NCSL Division 1 Championship in the Fall 2007 season.  Now that we have finished it looks like most of the Strykers will be moving on to college.  Most will play soccer, some won't (or didn't) by choice but what is most most important was the friendships and great memories that were part of this team over the years that everyone will keep with them for the rest of their lives.

SEASON SUMMARY
We had a very successful season, between league play and 4 tournaments, our overall record was:
18-5-3....54GF....21GA...14 Shut outs

NCSL SPRING 2002 LEAGUE PLAY RESULTS
A VERY successful season in deed. The Strykers tied for 2nd place in point, but due to the head-to-head tie breaker, we ended up 3rd - which earned us the move up to D2. The two most noteworthy stats for the season were 6 Shut Outs in 9 games, and the fact that we allowed the least amount of goals in the entire division! We're very proud of the boys.
Our season record was:
6-2-1....16GF....6GA...6 Shut outs

MID SEASON TOURNAMENT RESULTS
As has become a traditional Memorial Day tournament for these boys, we played in the 2002 Virginian. "Lanza Ball" is really taking hold. We took home the CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY for the U11 Boys Premier division of 16 teams. Our tournament record was:
5-0-0....21GF....2GA...3 Shut outs

PRESEASON TOURNAMENT RESULTS
We played in 3 preseason tournaments for Spring 2002: OP Yellow Jacket Invitational, Chesapeake Cup, and Beach FC Spring Classic.
Between the 3, our record was
7-3-2....17GF....13GA...5 Shut outs

Winter 2001/2002
Unlike prior years, the team did not participate in indoor league play. We opted to train indoors this year. But, we did play in an indoor tournament held at George Mason University.
Tournament Results:
4-0-0....18GF....2GA....2 SO

FALL 2001 - New TEAM...New Season
The Fall season started off less than successful, when looking at game results early on. We played 2 pre-season tournaments, a mid-season tournament, a post-season tournament, and, of course our regular NCSL Division 2 game schedule. In all, we played 23 games with a 6-7-10 record, 30 GF (Goals For) and 28 GA (Goals Against) and 8 SO (Shut Outs) We definitely were not bragging about game results.

Before Coach Lanza ever laid eyes on these boys, he told us the importance of developing the skills to play in the older years...he said there are "ways" to coach these young players to win NOW, but it would "cheat" them of the skills they will need to play competitively when they are older...when it "counts". He said he will train them the style of soccer they will NEED to be able to play competitively when they are 14 and older.

Once the season was finished, we went back, analyzed the season, and compared the "beginning" to the end...here's where we find the "eye opening" facts, and now find ourselves able to BRAG about our first season. We came to realize that several factors impacted the team's initial performance: first season on a full sized field with full sized goals, 15 kids as a group that are not used to playing with each other...more like against each other, a brand new trainer/coach (Lanza) that none of the kids had ever seen before tryouts, and a new way of playing the game and playing positions - Total Possession Soccer.

PRESEASON TOURNAMENT RESULTS
We played in the PWSI Toys 4 Tots & the Dulles National Tournaments.
Between the two, our record was:
2-4-1....10 GF....14 GA....1 SO

FIRST 2 NCSL GAMES - FALL 2001
After the first 2 weeks into the NCSL season, the '91 Strykers NCSL board read,
"2 games played, 0 wins, 2 losses, 0 ties, 1 goal for, 6 goals against".

With so much talent on the team, it just didn't seem possible to have a total record of:
2-6-1....11 GF....20 GA
Imagine the feeling...we had lost 6 of the first 9 games we had played...and we hadn't even played the TOUGHEST teams yet!!!!

THE LAST 14 GAMES OF THE FALL SEASON - INCLUDING 2 TOURNAMENTS
THEN the team started to "gel".
After that second NCSL game the Strykers really performed VERY well...playing 14 games with a:
4-1-9....19 GF....8 GA....7 SO
Imagine what it was like...after losing 6 of the first 9 games, the '91 Strykers came back and Won or Tied all but 1 of the last 14 games!!! The '91 Strykers played the toughest teams in these 14, and showed them all, that THIS TEAM is one of the toughest teams THEY will have to face.

POST-SEASON...A GREAT FINISH TO A TRULY SUCCESSFUL SEASON
To finish out soccer for the Fall 2001 season, we played in the MCSA Fall Classic. This annual tournament is hosted by our Club...Mid-County Soccer Association. We played in the U11 Boys Royal Division

We WON!!!!
4 games played,3 WINS, 0 LOSSES, 1 Tie, 6 Goals For, 1 Goal Against.

It may have started off rough, but the boys continually increased their level of intensity, and ability to play the possession style of soccer. They never lost sight of where Coach Lanza is taking them. Most of the players on the team are "winners" and don't take losing very well. The neatest part of the whole thing is that the kid "see" the big picture...the long term picture that Coach Lanza is laying out for them.

Looking forward to the Spring 2002 season

Tournament Success - Prior to Fall 2001
StrykCobraTournys

This shows all of the tournament success of the '91 Strykers and the Cobras

End of Spring 2001 - a NEW Start
The end of the Spring 2001 season, marked the end of the small field, small sided 7v7 play.

With all of the great teams in the area, it would be difficult for any of them to pick up many solid players to play the Big field with 11v11 play.

The VIST Cobras & the '91 Strykers were in the same boat. Both teams had some great players, but would have needed 4-6 strong players to "round out" their squads. It can be very difficult to get more than 1 or 2, much less 6!!

The Coaches of the 2 teams decided to more or less "dissolve" their two teams, send them to an open tryout with Bill Lanza, as well as encouraging them to check out all options. At the same time they advertised that a whole new team would be forming under the direction of Coach Lanza.

A whole new beginning with a whole new team found the NEW '91 Strykers having a roster with players from both teams as well as other teams.

Between Coach Lanza and the high quality players picked as the NEW '91 STRYKERS...the future sure looks good for these boys.

Since many of the players on this squad came from either the Cobras or the Strykers, OUR history below reflects the "roots" of THIS TEAM

'91 Strykers Spring 2001 NCSL
The Strykers landed in Division 2 for our first time in Ranked brackets. We struggled, and with the exception of 1 game, the games were all very tight. Fortunately we were able to maintain a spot in Division 2...and it came down to the LAST game.

Cobras Spring 2001 NCSL
The Cobras made it in to Division 1 for the first ranked season - had a tough go of it, but weren't far behind in points from the top teams. Any one game would have made the difference.

Cobra's Spring '01- Jefferson Cup Finalists
The Cobra's were the Finalists of the prestigious Jefferson Cup 2001 Tournament held in Richmond!

Stryker's Spring '01 - St. Patty's Tournament
We have had tough games before, and occassionally gotten "shut out", but we must have missed the "signs" that said DO NOT ENTER. The chemistry was not there for us this year in the St. Patty's tournament. We went 0-3-0, and went home! 0 goals for and 8 against! YES, we got skunked the entire tournament! The game against the SAC United Premier team, was a decided win for them. They completely dominated. The other 2 games we were definitely playing well enough to win, tie, or at least score, but we just couldn't put one in the net. TOUGH way to start out the spring, but our boys are up to it.

Winter '00 / '01 Indoor Soccer at TSP
We had a decent showing in our annual indoor season. We went 5-2-1, 74 goals for and 32 against. We fell one game short of winning the trophy for the season.

Stryker's Fall '00 U10 NCSL
Overall the Strykers had a good season. We went 5-2-2, 25 Goals for and 10 goals against. The record was good enough to put us in Division 2 for the Spring 2001 season, which is the first season where you are put in numbered divisions.

MCSA Fall Classic '00
Annual tournament hosted by Mid County Soccer Association.
Record 2-1-1. 4 Goal for, and 3 against. While this was a round robin tournament, with no "final" match, our last game was against Bill Delaney's SYC Fire Gold. It just so happened that the Strykers and the Fire Gold were leading the bracket going in to the game, so, in essence it was a final. When we play the Fire, it is usually a toss up as to who will come out on top. Columbus Day in Hampton, we knocked them out of the finals, and for this tournament they took the Championship. Hat's off to Bill...he always plays tough.

October 2000 Columbus Day U10
Columbus Day 2000 host - Beach FC 3-2-0, 10 goals "for", 6 "against"
(WON the Semi as the WildCard team, 2nd overall - lost the Championship)

June '00 - McSoccerFest
Three of our boys played in the McSoccerFest Tournament held at Hellwig.
Tim and Jamie played on Saturday in the U10 age division and they went all the way to the championship and WON!!
Gage played with all U11's in the U12 division and went all the way to the championship game, but lost. Still got a trophy for second.
Special Congratulations to Tim, Jamie, and Gage!!!

Stryker's Spring '00 U9 NCSL
The STRYKERS had a very busy season. We played in 2 preseason tournaments, 9 regular season NCSL matches, and the Virginian 2000 Memorial Day tournament. It was an exciting season and the most highly competitive season we have seen. All games combined, our record was 15-4-2, 56 goals "for", 25 goals "against".

NCSL Season - 6-1-2, 16 goals for, 7 against
Chesterfield Spring Invitational - 1-2-0, 5 goals for, 9 against

Winter '99 / '00 Indoor Soccer at TSP
The STRYKERS were placed in the U8 / U9 age division. Unfortunately there were only 2 other U9 teams with competitive skill. The very last game of the indoor season was forfeited by the STRYKERS because of an out of town tournament.

The STRYKERS played 7 of 8 games
Forfeited 1 game
Won 7 games
Scored 117 goals FOR
Allowed 19 goals AGAINST (7 of which were scored in a game where the STRYKERS played 2 men down, 5 v 7, deliberately due to level of skill of the opponent)

Stryker's Fall '99 NCSL U9
Fall 1999 - the STRYKERS played travel for the first time as a U9 soccer team playing in NCSL.  This was also the first season for NCSL U9 division.  It was a great first season in travel.  9 games played, record: 8-1-0.  Throughout the entire season they gave up 11 goals and scored 43.

*17th Annual RMYSL/PVYSL Columbus Day Tournament (Oct 9/10) - first travel tourny - CHAMPIONS - scoring 21 goals for, allowing only 3 goals against - winning all 4 games played.

*'99 MCSA Fall Classic (Oct 20/21) - CHAMPIONS - played 4 games, won all 4, 20 goals for

Spring '99 U8 vs U9/U10
Still U8, the Strykers again played "up" in the U9/U10 recreational Cadet division.
End of season results - 8-0-0.
In June '99 the STRYKERS played in 2 All-Star Tournaments:

  • The FPYC Father's Day Tournament - played 4 games,
won all 4, 24 goals for and 2 goals against

  • The Mid-County Summer Soccer-Fest - played 4 games,
won all 4, 11 goals "for" and 0 goals "against"

  • Winter '98 / '99 U8 Indoor vs U9/10 Travel
The STRYKERS played Indoor soccer at Total Sports Pavilion in Woodbridge against
U9 & U10 Travel Teams.  These boys again put out a tremendous amount of effort
to keep up with the competition.  While some of the games were close, others were not
close at all (1-6-1 record) but again, the TEAM was very successful in working toward their
GOAL - development of the skills necessary to play Fall '99 Travel

    Fall '98 U8 vs U9/U10 House
The STRYKERS, then U8 players, were granted permission by MCSA to play up in
the Cadet division, which consists of U9/U10 house teams.   There is a considerable
difference in size, strength and speed between U9/U10 players and U8 players.
The STRYKERS "stepped up to the plate" and responded very well to the "big boys".
Utilizing their skill to offset the age difference they had a great season
    with 8-0-0 record.

    Spring '98 U7 vs U8 T Division
MCSA created a "Transitional Division" which is designed for a "higher level"
of competition for the U7/U8 aged players.  The "make-up" of the Transitional
teams were basically that of All-Star teams.
This division consisted of 4 teams:

  • The STRYKERS-all U7

  • A U8 girls team

  • One Boys team with all U8 players

  • One Boys team with only one U7 player

  • This was a very high level of competition for the STRYKERS and the first time they had to face skilled opponents.  While their win/loss record would be considered weak (1-6-1), the results proved to be invaluable - they had improved and adapted their level of play to be able to stay with the older teams.

    Fall '97 U7 House
In the Fall '97 season, as a U7 team, the STRYKERS played in the MCSA Bantam division which consists of U7/U8 players.  This proved to be a very unbalanced level of competition with the TEAM having to pull back to prevent running the score too high against the recreational teams - record 8-0-0.

    The Beginning - June 1997
The '91 STRYKERS were formed during the summer of 1997 as a U7 "Developmental" TEAM.  The points and/or concepts that define "developmental" are:

  • TEAM of players with advanced individual skills

  • Players are coached to learn TEAM skills

  • The TEAM plays "up" against older teams to learn how to contend with bigger, stronger, and faster players

  • Ultimately, the Developmental TEAM is designed to "develop" the skills required to play "Travel" Soccer

    Cobra's Fall '00 U10 NCSL
The Cobras finished with a record of 6-1-1 in their two preseason tournaments. We were Finalists in the Dulles National Tournament (lost on a Coin Toss after a storm ended the game in the 2nd OT) and we lost in the Semi Finals of the FPYC Tournament. We out scored our opponents 25 to 3 during this stretch of 8 games in two weeks.
