Each member of the team was rewarded for their success with a Drew Williams Tournament Champion tee-shirt. MB Moreno Sunday, March 18 Emily Greco Wins Girls STATE Free-Throw Competion! Coach Brian Weinmann of the St. Rose CYO 5th grade girls Div. I team passed on the exciting news that Emily Greco won the State Girls Free-Throw competition at her age level. Her dad Tony says "She shot 19 out of 25 free throws and competed against 13 other girls from all over the state. We just got back last night and she was so proud of herself!" Dad Tony also said to Coach Brian "Thanks for all that you do with her." Emily is a St. Rose CYO player, and a student at St. Rose School. The competition was held by the Knights of Columbus DARYL R. MUELLER CALIFORNIA STATE FREE THROW COMPETITION State Finals Date: Saturday, March 17, 2007 Place: San Joaquin Memorial High School 1406 N. Fresno St. Fresno, CA Way to go Emily! St. Rose CYO is proud of you. Thursday, March 1 St. Rose 3rd grade boys Lions take 2nd place at the Tomales Tournament The St. Rose CYO 3rd grade boys Lions team participated in the 3rd grade Tomales Tournament last weekend, February 24th and 25th. They played a total of 6 games over the 2 day tournament. Even with this grueling schedule, the team played great and came in 2nd place! The team is coached by Jeff Harper. The team members are Ben, Billy, Seth, Jace, Cedrick, Sam, Curtis, Chase, and Kyle. Coach Harper said the kids all had a great time. Each participant in the tournament received a tournament tee-shirt, and awards were handed out for top finishers. The Tomales staff run a great tournament. They have a full snack bar, and encourage participants and fans to visit frequently. The Tomales Tournament is a great wrap up to the 3rd grade season. There are no playoffs for the 3rd graders, and there are so many 3rd grade teams during the season that there are multiple divisions. This year there were three 3rd grade divisions, and St. Rose had two teams playing in two different divisions, the Lions and the Wolves. Both teams finished with terrific records. This is a very impressive fact, knowing that the teams are picked evenly talent wise, and the teams are all randomly assigned to the divisions. The Tomales Tournament allows teams to play each other that they never faced during the regular CYO season. The 3rd graders are looking forward to playing next year on a 4th grade team. While we are glad Patty's suffering has ended, we are very sorry for Andy and his family and their great loss. Please keep them in your prayers, and help any way you can. While the St. Rose CYO 7th grade boys beat St. Elizabeth in the championship. The boys game was a nail biter. The St. Rose boys lead by 6 points at half time, and seemed to have the game in hand. This was the third game of the day for the St. Elizabeth boys, having played St. Rose first thing Sunday morning. After loosing a close game to St. Rose the St. Elizabeth team won the looser's team bracket in a noon game to make it back to the championship game. What a squad of great players! The St. Elizabeth team played with 8 boys, to the St. Rose team of 10. They were clearly tired in the last game. After some words of encouragement from their coaches at half time they came out fresh, with their determination renewed. With a swing of momentum, St. Elizabeth hit two 3-point shots in a row, followed by a 2-pointer to take the lead. The crowd roared! It looked like St. Elizabeth was going to pull it off. They held a close lead into the 4th quarter... With six seconds left in the game and a one point lead, St. Elizabeth celebrated when St. Rose turned over the ball. After a timeout, St. Elizabeth inbounded the ball under the St. Rose basket. #33 on the St. Rose team (Alan) intercepted a pass at the top of the key, and with two seconds remaining on the clock sank a 15 foot jumper to win the game for St. Rose (by one point). The crowd was now in a frenzy. Many fans sat dazed, not realizing the game was over. There was great emotion displayed on both ends of the court. There was an awards presentation following the game and individual medals were awarded to the boys by Drew Williams' father and brother. The coach anounced each player's name to receive his medal. The coaches were awarded a team trophy. St. Rose followed up the game with pizza and video games...
