FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO SUCCESSFUL TRAINING

Factors that Contribute to Successful Weight Training

In any sport success or failure in a game or match depends upon numerous variables. Similarly, there are a number of factors that play a role in whether your young athlete leaves the weight room feeling psyched about the workout or frustrated and disappointed. Some of these factors include:

  • Rest – Is your young athlete getting sufficient rest prior to working out? Fatigue going in to the gym usually results in a sluggish performance.

  • Diet and Nutrition – Sometimes young athletes do okay in the gym fueled by a breakfast of soda and donuts, but in the long run they will miss their potential.

  • Stretching – Preparing the muscles before working out is extremely important for assisting the muscles during the work out. Making sure the muscles are stretched and warm before weight training helps the performance of those muscles during the exercises and protects them from injuries.

  • Gym Environment – Is the gym too hot or too cold? Is there poor ventilation or is the humidity too high? These types of environmental factors can be both physically inhibiting and psychologically distracting.

  • Condition of Equipment – If the weight room equipment is not well maintained it can be very frustrating for your young athlete. If weight machines are not adequately lubricated they often don’t reflect accurately on the athlete’s effort.

Anyone who has spent any time in the gym recognizes that a bad day is inevitable. There are things, however, under your control that can help reduce the number of those bad days. Work on creating the best situation for your young athletes to ensure their success in the weight room and instill in them a long-term interest in weight training.
