Your Boys' Track & Field Coaching Staff
Head Coach:
Tom McCartan – Tom has been coaching track and cross-country at his alma mater since 2002. Since taking over the boys’ team, they have never had a losing season. A 1985 graduate of St. Mark’s, Tom has also served as head coach of girls’ track at Delcastle High School and head coach of men’s and women’s cross-country at Neumann College. In 2007, Tom was named New Castle County Boys’ Coach of the Year for spring track, after the Spartans placed 2nd at the State Championship Meet, the highest finish in school history. From 2006 through 2009, the St. Mark's Boys have scored more total points in the state championship meet than any other team in the state. Tom ran four years of cross-country and track at St. Mark’s, putting up PR’s of 17:13 for a cross-country 5k, and 10:31 for 3200 meters on the track. He works full-time at St. Mark’s in the library and lives in Newark with his daughter and son. Tom is a coaching disciple of legendary New Zealand coach, Arthur Lydiard. In addition to overseeing the boys' track & field program as a whole, Tom trains the distance runners in the spring and the sprinters in the winter. He has never tasted coffee and secretly watches American Idol.
Assistant Coaches:
Ron Smith – Ronnie came on board in 2005 and has been Coach McCartan’s proverbial “Right Hand Man” ever since. This Harvey Keitel lookalike has also been the head coach of Spartan freshman football since 1998 and an assistant with the varsity football team since 1995. His contributions to the boys’ track program have been priceless; Coach McCartan can sometimes be heard saying the best thing he has done for the program was to utter the words “I want Ron Smith” to the St. Mark’s Athletic Director. Ronnie graduated from Dickinson High School, where he played varsity football in 1973 and 1974, holding the single-game rushing record for 5 years. He also competed in track & field under fabled coach Carl Schmidtt, where he was a fixture on the sprint relays and an accomplished jumper. In 1975, Ronnie graduated from Dickinson High without ever being expelled or suspended and was generally liked by all animals and humans. He has put two children through St. Mark’s, where they also competed in track & field. Ronnie trains the boys’ sprinters in the spring and also oversees the team’s weight training.
Barry Zavislan – A popular Theology teacher at St. Mark’s, “Z” has been coaching here since 1991, doing turns in football, lacrosse, and track. Z has coached Spartan sprinters and jumpers to great success. Prior to working at St. Mark’s, he coached football, basketball, and track at St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake, Michigan. Some of Z’s protégés have gone on to professional careers in the NFL, but never said “hi” to him at the Super Bowl. As a schoolboy, Z lettered in football, basketball, track, and crew at St. Mary’s Prep. Z and his razor-sharp sense of humor will guide the boys' and girls' jumpers in the spring.
Pat McKeefery – His name sends a shiver down the spine of our boys’ sprinters, who are convinced Coach McKeefery is just a little crazy. Maybe he is the evil half of the boys’ sprint coaches, but since coming on board in 2006, two school records have fallen in the sprint relays. A 1975 graduate of St. Mark’s, Pat still holds the school record for 400 meters at 49.14 seconds, and was part of the school record 4x400 time of 3:21.94. His coaching resume includes 7 CYM Championships in track at Holy Angels. Pat was a member of two state championship football teams at St. Mark’s and continued his track career at the University of Delaware, where he was on three ECC champion teams. Pat’s two sons have also had outstanding track careers at St. Mark’s.
Mike DiGennaro – When Coach Deej isn’t teaching English at St. Mark’s or coaching distance runners, chances are he’s running. Arguably the best distance runner in the tri-state area, Deej took a season off to train for the 2008 Olympic Games. Illness and injury derailed those plans and in 2009 he takes the helm as head coach of the girls' spring track team. Deej competed in the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 3000 meter steeple-chase and was agonizingly close to making the team. His qualifying time of 8:35 ranked him 14th in the nation and in the top 100 worldwide. Since coming over to St. Mark’s from the Charter School of Wilmington in 2005, Mike has injected enthusiasm and energy into the boys’ and girls’ track and cross-country programs. A native of Massachusetts, his Red Sox and Patriots are favorite topics of conversation. He also has his own parking space at every Dunkin Donuts in the county. As a collegiate runner, Deej set 5 school records and earned 5 MVP awards at the University of Delaware, along with numerous All-America East and All-Region honors. Deej works with the boys' distance runners in the winter.
Greg Stirparo - Stirp joins the staff in 2009 as the boys' and girls' throwing coach. He is a 2005 graduate of St. Mark's and will soon leave the University of Delaware with a degree in chemical engineering. Stirp played football at St. Mark's in addition to being a standout thrower for the track and field team, where he launched a personal best throw of 131'10" in the discus throw. In his senior season, he was named team MVP. Stirp continued to throw at the University of Delaware, focusing on the 35 pound weight throw. His toss of 50'3.5" ranks 10th All-Time at Delaware. Stirp was a volunteer assistant in 2008 and now takes over for beloved former throws coach, Kyle Fray, and plans to continue churning out strong weight-men.
