2011/2012 Stingers Tryout Results

The Coaching Staff would like to thank all of the girls that attended the Stingers's tryout.

We respect that this is a very difficult time for parents, players and coaches.  The coaching staff firmly believes that any of the girls attending the tryout could have been successful as part of the St. Louis Stingers.  However, due to only having 3 openings, that could not happen.  We wish all of the girls much success in the future and again thank you for the attending.  The following girls have been selected to join the St. Louis Stingers for the 2011/2012 team:

Abby

Elaine

Jenna

Thanks again!

St. Louis Stingers Celebrated With Video Presentation

The Stingers traveled to Indy this past weekend to face some really tough teams in a College Exposure Tournament (Fire Cracker Circle).  The Stingers played 5 games and there were no easy teams.  They faced teams from all over the greater mid west area and battled in everyone.

The weekend was capped off by some crazy presentations that the girls did centering around "weird stuff I can do that no one else can do" and a Stinger video presentation reflecting back on the season to date.

The video link can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NyLxrCR1KE&sns=em

Thanks Frank for preparing this, I know it means a lot to the girls!

Stingers Take 3rd in ASA KC Memorial Day

St. Louis Stingers Take 3rd Place in ASA Memorial Day Tournament in Kansas City

This past weekend proved to be a huge challenge as 32 teams from all over the midwest met to play in one of the most respected tournaments that ASA puts on - the annual KC Memorial Day tournament.  The Stingers went 7-3 and took 3rd place.  The weekend started off before bracket play by the Stingers going 4-2 in pool play.

Saturday brought a cool misty day and the girl's first game was against the Missouri Madness.  The Stingers got behind early but exploded in the bottom of the first inning by batting through their 12 girl roster and went on to win 12-4.  Then, the Stingers played the Missouri Hurricanes and the hitting continued with an impressive 11-0 win.  The night brough on the big challenge and the Stingers took on the Nebraska Nemesis Gold.  The Stingers took and early lead but couldn't hold on and lost 4-1.  Saturday ended with a 2-1 pool play record.

Sunday brought 3 more pool games.  The Stingers needed a must win and took on a 2-1 Desoto Belles.  The Stingers' bats arose and the they ended up winning 6-0.  Now in the driver seat for the #2 seed, the girl's bats went frozen and we couldn't hit.  The Stingers lost 2-0 to the Missouri Black Ice and were 3-2 and needed another must win to maintain the #2 seed.  The team took on a very solid Hot Stix team and won 2-0 to secure the #2 seed with a 4-2 pool record.

Bracket play for the girls started at 9 pm Saturday under the lights and a cool breeze.  The team played the Swing Builder Lightning and won 6-0.  With 16 teams left in bracket, the night was over and the Stingers rested for Monday's matinee.  The first game was against one of their home town rivals, the Warcats.  In a very intense game, the Stingers prevailed 3-2.  With a game off the girls prepared for an extremely solid Neosho Flames team from Joplin.  The game became a pitcher's duel and we prevailed 2-0.  With only four teams left, the Stingers drew the eventual winner  - the Originals.  The Stingers gave it all they had but ended up bowing out 2-0 on a great game by both teams.

The Stingers had a great time this weekend and as in every year, leave with some really cool memories.  The coaching staff and Stingers with to thank Alyssa, Wendy and Kayla for playing with us - you all were great and loved having you play with us!

Stingers Runner Up in College Exposure Tournament
The St. Louis Stingers took second place this past weekend.  As the host of the St. Louis Stingers College Exposure tournament, we hosted 15 teams to the St. Louis Sand Lot facility.  The Stingers lost in the finals to the Olathe Rockets Gold 2-0.  All weekend, the Stingers played outstanding defense including some ESPN web gems from Amanda and Kelsey.  Pitching was top notch by all three pitchers (Sarah, Michelle and Ashley).  And the hitting was solid and came through when the team needed it most.

CRAZY BOWL 2011 ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS!!

The St. Louis Stingers held their 5th annual Crazy Bowl fundraiser and let me say what a huge success.  For the fifth year in a row, the Stingers sold out Concord Lanes and hosted 192 bowlers to a night of fun!  Under the hard work of the Boyer family, the Stingers were able to raise enough money that each girl could use the tradition team fees for traveling expenses to out of town college exposure tournaments.  This group of 12 young ladies is greatly appreciative of all that has been given to them and the Stinger tradition lives on!!

A First of Many Days Like This Ahead - Grace Signs To Play On In College

Today marks a new day in Stinger history.  At 12:10 pm today senior Grace Fritz signed her college commitment letter to play for the East Central Falcons.  "Grace is a tremendous player that brings so much to the game and the Stingers.  Now she gets to bring her talents to East Central College" according to Coach Parks.  He added "it's really hard to find players with her attitude, work ethic and just geniune desire to get better."

Grace was celebrated at today's practice with a congratulations cookie cake and card.  She set the bar for the other Stingers!

Grace, on behalf of the Stinger organization we congratulate you on your successes and look foward to seeing you play at the collegiate level.

Bretts Buddies Fishing

Stingers Participate in Brett's Best Buddies

On October 24, 2010, the St. Louis Stingers participated in the Brett's Best Buddies First Annual Fishing Tournament.  The tournament was a Make a Wish fundraiser for a little youngster (Ryan) who is battling (and I might say a very tough battler!) Leukemia.

The Stingers were there for support, volunteering and even a few to fish!  It was a great day for weather, the lake was beatiful and we were even well represented with winning the largest fish caught - an 8 pound catfish.  Way to go Sarah, I mean Frank.

While it's our goal to play hard on the field it's also a major part of life to play hard off the field.  We have formed a special bond with Brett and his family over the years.  Brett's dad is the owner of Sports Image and he is the Stingers's uniform provider.

Brett, Jimmy and Shelly - what a great event and we were glad to be part of it!!

Stingers Take 5th Place at 16u USSSA Nationals!!

The St. Louis Stingers 94 took 5th Place at the USSSA Nationals in Overland Park Kansas this past week!  This year's nationals featured 65 teams from many different states.  Many of the teams are very well known and have outstanding clubs and teams.  After battling rain and temperatures in the 100s, the ladies showed no end to their run on Sunday.  After two hard fought games, the Stingers ending up meeting their match to the Nebraska Blue Diamonds and settling for a fantastic 5th Place finish.  They ended up going 5-2 in bracket play and saw gusty performances from all the girls and when they hit baby they hit that ball!!

Congrats on a great season ladies!!  The Stingers ended up this year with a final record of 57-30-1 playing some of the best competition from the east coast through the southern belt!

Stingers Tie for 9th at ASA 16u Memorial Day Tournament

The Stingers ended up tying for 9th place over the Memorial Day weekend (out of 44 teams) at the ASA KC Memorial Day Tournament.  This was by far the toughest competition that the Stingers saw so far in 2010.  All of the Stingers opponents were top notch teams and most of the games were intense until the end.  We saw pitching at the D1 and D2 college level in over half of the games.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the annual "skits" where the the players have free reign to make fun of the coaching staff.  This year, the skits were the best they have ever been!  All in all, the weekend was a great success and now the Stingers are back home to play in the USSSA 18u June Tournament this weekend.  The Stingers are 39-14-1 so far for 2010!

Stingers Crazybowl Another Huge Success
Stingers Lovin the Boyers

Go crazy folks! Go crazy folks!  Those were the famous words of Jack Buck a few years back and those words held true last night at the 4th Annual Stingers Crazybowl event held Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Concord Bowling Lanes.  The Stingers hosted 192 bowlers to this year's event (sellout each and every year) sporting ages from 5 to 75.  The night saw crazy bowling and crazy bidding on some really cool baskets and autographed items.  In between all the balls heading towards the pins were three raffles with winning prizes of Cardinals tickets to a 50/50 money split.  The winner's payout was $330!!  Wow!!

This event was not possible without the dedication of all Stinger families but especially one in particular - the Boyer family.  With their endless work on this event, we as Stingers, extend to you our deepest thank you to all that you do for this team.  Thank you Matt and Mary.

The Stingers thank all our friends who came to the event and hope you enjoyed your time as much as we did seeing you!

The Stingers thank our three main sponsors (as pictured): Sports Image (Jim Hammond), Keystone Financial (Mike Corgiat) and Game Day Academy (Ethan Silverman).  All three sponsors have and continue to play a much more important role than they will ever realize in the development of each of the Stinger's personal and sporting lives - Thanks guys!

See you at the 2011 Crazy Bowl!!

Stingers Win Second Fall Tournament and Post a 11-0 Start to 2009/2010 Season
Stingers Win!!
The St. Louis Stingers won their second consecutive tournament this weekend by going 6-0 and improving to 11-0 for the 2009/2010 season. The Stingers weekend included a thrilling game against a very good Wicked team out of Illinois. The Stingers were down 12-6 after the 5th inning and made a late running charge to score 5 in the 6th and win it in the bottom of the seventh with a walk off double by Haley. Both teams displayed a tremendous level of hitting. Over the weekend, the Stingers enjoyed solid pitching again from Ashley and Michelle. The bats kept on rolling all weekend long. Many of the girls batted in excess of 400 over the weekend. Amanda was named player of the tournament with her outstanding offensive and defense output all weekend long. Mara and Anna may have hit the hardest balls ever in the entire 10 years of the Stinger program. Key defensive plays during the weekend came from Sierra, Abby, Anna, Mary, Linsey and Emily. In addition to solid defense, several key hits came from the entire team. The Stingers defeated the Classics, Warcats, Mustangs, Wicked, Nemo Hot Shots and the Down State Rippers in the finals. The Stingers averaged over 10 runs per game. Congrats on a great fall season. The Stingers are off to practicing now and will pick back up games in the early part of 2010. Ladies, keep up the “team” attitude and best of luck for the remainder of the season! Coaching Staff

Stingers Tie For Third in College Exposure Tournament
The Stingers 94 improved to 14-1 for the 2010 season by going 3-1 in the College Exposure Tournament at Jamestown Sports Complex this past weekend.  The Stingers lost to the St. Louis Synergy 18u team in the semi finals.  Congrats to the Synergy for winning it all.  While the Stingers fought hard giving up on average of 2-3 years in age, they just couldn't pull off the upset win against the Synergy.  The Stingers beat the Metro Mustangs, KC Diamond Skilz and the 18u Warcats (in a thrilling ITB showdown) capping off a 3-1 weekend.  The Stingers saw stong performances on both the offensive and defensive side of play.  The Stingers are next scheduled to play in the February 13-15 College Exposure tournament at Jamestown.  Keep up the hard work ladies!!

Stingers Take First Place in USSSA National Qualifier
10-16 USSSA Tournament

The St. Louis Stingers went 5-0 this past weekend and in the process took first place in the USSSA October 17/18 National Qualifier Tournament.  The Stingers scored 43 runs in the five games and gave up 7 runs to its opponents.  The Stingers defense was outstanding from all positions including top performances from Michelle and Ashley at pitching.  Mara caught all 5 games and gave up no stolen bases.  The offense was electric!  Anna sent a ball close to 300 feet and became the first Stinger to hit a dinger in the 2009/2010 season!  Had the games been played on fields with 200' fences, the coaches concluded that there would have been 6 homeruns from Abby, Anna (3), Linsey and Mara.  Mary came up with the key hit of the weekend that blew open the championship game.  The defensive play(s) of the tournament were awarded to Sierra as she was given the team trophy.  Amanda was by far the most solid defensive player for the weekend and received the highest praise award possible (from the competition).  She was singled out from a player on the second place team (of the tournament) as the best short stop she had ever seen (but we already knew that)!!!  Amanda, that's really cool - that doesn't happen very often!  The Stingers were back to their old crazy ways stealing over 25 bases in the weekend (even Linsey).

The team was happy to see Haley back in uniform after sustaining a serious injury to her knee back in early July.

Emily, we missed you but you're going to state for High School - Good Luck girl!!

The Stingers are off to a little Skyzone battle this upcoming weekend.  Then they are back in action in a few weeks for their final fall tournament.

Great start ladies!

PREP SOFTBALL: Lancers still excel in league play in reloading season

By Mike Elder

Even in a 'down' year there is still something very positive going on with the Lafayette High softball team.

Depite having an 11-11 overall record this year, the Lancers, who have won a record eight state titles, are still in position to win the Suburban West Conference title heading into this week's play. Coach Scott DeNoyer's team was 5-0 in league games going into Monday's game with 4-1 Oakville.

"We're building confidence," said DeNoyer, whose team has won seven of its last 11 games after a rough start. "Of late, we've been doing exceptionally well. Timely hits, good fielding and solid pitching are what have gotten us to the top of the standings."

A lot of the solid pitching has come from Ashley Parks. Despite being a freshman, she's posted a 9-5 record, a 3.53 earned run average and 47 strikeouts in 93.3 innings pitched.

"She's our go-to pitcher," said DeNoyer. "She's become confident that she can compete at this level. She's willing to take on and challenge anybody."

Parks is not the same as former Lancer superstar pitcher Meghan Lambert who helped lead Lafayette to a state title two years ago. Lambert moved on to Northwestern University after an outstanding prep career.

"She was a big-time power pitcher," said DeNoyer of Lambert. "Anne Parks is more of a crafty pitcher. She concentrates on mixing up her speeds and hitting spots."

Because Parks is not a big strikeout pitcher, the area team has needed solid glovework to win. DeNoyer said he's gotten that from players such as senior shortstop Liz Desloge, junior center fielder Dana Lawson, catcher Mara Worley and third baseman Mariah Furman.

"With championship-caliber teams, you have to build them up the middle," said DeNoyer. "We have three kids who have been there. Dana brings the numbers and has a lot of experience under her belt."

Lawson leads the team in hitting with a batting average of .418 and is far and away the squad's top run scorer with 24. Other key offensive performers have been Desloge, who is hitting .339 with 12 runs batted in, and Worley, who is batting .306 with 12 RBI.

DeNoyer said the Lancers have benefitted from being a team that others sometimes look past. Lafayette is not the bully on the block this season.

"It's not bad being an underdog," said DeNoyer. "We try to take advantage of that. It's always fun doing things other people say you can't do."

Lafayette will begin district play in a couple of weeks. The other teams in the district they'll be battling include St. Joe's, Marquette, Ladue, Parkway West and Gateway Tech.

"We're expecting to go into district strong, confident and with high expectations of trying to uphold our tradition," said DeNoyer. "Once you get to that point a lot of crazy things can happen and our opponents hopefully will underestimate us."

Stingers in the news....
Michelle pitching against Fox

PREP SOFTBALL: Boyer helps Panthers hunt down Fox
Freshman pitches a gem in Mehlville's 3-2 win

Mehlville softball manager Bob Kern called it a typical Michelle Boyer pitching performance.

Boyer, who is just a freshman, pitched a nine-inning complete game Wednesday as the Panthers avenged a loss to Fox in the Suburban South-West Conference Tournament, winning 3-2 at Mehlville.

Fox had runners on base in every inning but only two were able to score off Boyer, who struck out only three, none after the fourth inning.

"I think that Michelle has the type of stuff somewhere down the line to be able to dominate games," Kern said. "But right now what we want her to do is throw strikes and keep us in the game."

She has been able to do that in her first handful of varsity starts.

"I just go out there and try to get three outs the best way I can," said Boyer, who has been pitching since she was six.

There were certainly some adventures for the Panthers against the Warriors, who had scored 11 runs against Mehlville in a game in which Boyer did not pitch in the tournament.

Fox left runners on second and third in both the second and third inning without scoring. The Warriors scored their only run of regulation in the fourth but stranded a runner in scoring position in the sixth and left two on and had another thrown out at the plate in the seventh inning.

Fox had the leadoff runner on in the eighth and she eventually reached third base. But, once again, Boyer got out of the jam with a groundball.

The Warriors would take the lead in the top of the ninth inning on doubles by Courtney Durst and Tory Ellis but they again stranded a pair of runners in scoring position. Boyer retired Kayla Meier on a grounder to second. Meier had three hits in the game.

"It seems like Michelle has the ability to bear down when there are runners on base," Kern said. "She gets the strike out or the grounder back to the mound with a runner on third and one out. She has that knack as a freshman. She is doing an outstanding job."

Boyer also got the bat going for the first time this year as she had three hits, including an infield hit in the bottom of the ninth inning after Fox had taken the lead. That scored Kirsten Rogles who led off the inning with a single. She moved to second on a sacrifice by Corel Hezel. Another freshman, Jenna Parrott, singled to right with Rogles moving to third.

Boyer then tied the game with her infield hit. Molly Roesch, who is a two-time all-state player, struck out for the second time late in the game with the winning run on third. Jessica Tod walked on four pitches to load the bases.

Meggin Werner, who has already had a pair of four RBI games this season, came through with an infield hit of her own for the game-winning RBI as she barely beat the throw to first from Fox shortstop Ellis.

"It was exciting coming up in that kind of situation with the game on the line," said Werner. "It was a close play but I was safe. I wanted to go home at that point, but only if it was a win."

Fox would leave 11 runners on base and had a couple of others thrown out on the bases, and, in one instance, at the plate.

"I really try to pitch the same no matter the situation," Boyer said. "I try to pitch the same the whole game."

It was a frustrating loss for the Warriors, who had won the consolation championship of the Suburban Conference Tournament with wins over Parkway West, Mehlville and Lafayette.

"We just did not play our best game today," Warrior manager Terri Williams said. "We are still searching for that best game. We made some mental mistakes today and just did not come through in the clutch. Their pitcher did a good job out there."

Stingers Split Saturday's Play Going 2-2 in Tennessee

The St. Louis Stingers visited the southern softball world for the third straight year and ended Saturday's play with a 2-2 record before the heavy rains came and washed out play on Sunday.  The Stingers lost their first game 1-0 on an outstanding pitching performance by Michelle B.  The Stingers just couldn't figure out how to hit the pitching of the Tennessee Stars pitcher.  In the second game the Stinger bats exploded and the Stingers won 10-0 against the Stealers from Indiana.  In the third game, the Stingers beat Team Worth from Nashville in a perfectly executed game by the score of 2-1.  The Stingers ended the night with a 4-3 loss to the Tennessee Ball Hawks.  The main highlight of the day came with the 15 minute video presentation as prepared by Coach Harper and his Stinger Bee Production Company.  The video highlighted several Stinger moments and a look back on memory lane for the girls and coaches.  Thanks Coach Harper!!

The Stingers are now 19-10-3 for 2009.

Stinger Head Coach goes the "extra mile" to help solve team's base running woes....
Funny Linsey Pic
Linsey "Hollywood" Button

After studying game photos and watching countless hours of game tape, the Stinger coaching staff came to the conclusion that maybe some of the team's baserunning woes could be attributed to vision problems. In an unprecedented move, head coach Dave Parks enlisted the help of the Gateway Opthamalogy Treatment Center for Hopeful Athletes (GOTCHA) to test his theory. Medical specialists confirmed that poor vision indeed was hampering the teams ability to steal bases. In an amazing act of kindness, GOTCHA clinicians agreed to donate special corrective lenses to the St. Louis Stingers softball team. After an on-site eye exam at the Stingers practice, the girls had no problems seeing when to leave the base as it was pitched.  The Stingers would like to thank GOTCHA for their support!

Jan 24 tournament

The St. Louis Stingers took second place this weekend by going 2-1-1 over the weekend.  The Stingers faced 4 excellent 16u teams at the Jamestown Indoor Complex in St. Louis.   The Stingers started off the 3 game round robin format with a tie to the 16u Lady Booyahs.  Then the Stingers went on to beat the Indiana 16u Silver Lightning and the 16u Illinois Wicked Stixs.  By going 2-0-1 in round robin play, the Stingers advanced to the finals for a rematch with the 16u Lady Booyahs.  Both teams played extremely well and the Lady Booyahs came out ahead beating the Stingers 2-0.  Congrats to the Lady Booyahs.  This was the first big test for the Stingers as they made a commitment to play 16u most of the year (as they are a 14u team) and they looked very good against some very solid 16u teams.  Congrats Stingers and keep up the good work.  The Stingers record is now 6-1-1 for 2009.
