Celebrating 49 Years (1958 – 2007)
Welcome to 2006 - 2007 Season
This is our 49th Season. With the start of 2007 we will be celebrating our 50th year. Our meetings will be on Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:30 PM. The doors will be open at 6:45 PM. Our meetings will start promptly at 7:00 PM.
Activities: The Staff has been busy planning for our program. Some of the things we have planned are a Columbus Day Parade, in Astoria on Saturday, October 7th; Halloween Party October 26th; Veterans Day Ceremony, Saturday, November 11th; Christmas Party December 7th; St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City, Saturday, March 17th; Memorial Day Parades and Ceremony May 27th and 28th; Drill and Music Competitions in Rosedale at St. Clare’s on a Sunday in April.
Other things that we are working on are: day trips, our year-end weekend trip, and other activities. Details of extra-curricular activities will be given as they are planned. All our functions are in uniform, you will be instructed on the wearing of the uniform.
PARENTS: Cadets and Staff are required to attend all meetings, parades and functions of the Sea Cadets. In order for our program to work we need your input and help at times for driving, helping out at the parties either in the kitchen, serving, making baked goods, donating items needed, etc. If you have a skill that you can offer, please let us know. Every little help that you can give will be appreciated.
Classes: Our program doesn’t only have planned trips and activities. We have offered our Cadets the opportunity to learn drums, seamanship, knot tying, leadership skills, honor guard, as well as other skills. The drum corps requires strict discipline and home practice. We are fortunate to have qualified instructors available to teach the courses. Other courses we have been able to offer in the past when we have had qualified instructors are (arts & crafts, cooking, first aid). The courses are offered at St. Kevin’s. All our instructors are volunteers and the courses are free of charge. There may be a nominal charge for some supplies.
Drill Team: In addition to our classes we also have drill teams. The Drill Team marches with or without a rifle. We have a Trick Drill Team which is marching with a rifle and fancy movements with the rifle and marching. We also have a Silent Drill Team that performs all routines with the rifle and no voice commands. Everything is done by memory. If you would like to be a member of one, two or all three drill teams, you need to stay until 9:30 PM to practice for the drill teams, starting in January, 2007. At Parent’s Night, which is the last meeting for the season, we will put on an exhibition for the guests.
(cont’d)
Awards: At our Parent’s Night you will also receive all the awards you have earned during your Cadet year. We have special awards, activity awards, promotions. Some of the award ribbons are the recruiting ribbon. You will receive this ribbon if you bring in a new member. Outside activities ribbon for attending outside functions, such as parades and trips. After completing successfully the class you are assigned to and if you are the top Cadet for the class you will receive a medal. Perfect Attendance Ribbon and medal requires that you have perfect attendance for every meeting. You can be excused for a meeting if it is a religious function or if you are a member of a school band that is performing on one of our nights.
Please Note: It is up to the Commandant to determine if you will be excused for the activity. You must let us know ahead of time, if possible, in order to be excused; or you will be marked absent.
Merits and Demerits: We also have a merit and demerit system. Merits are given to Cadets who do good deeds, at the discretion and recommendation of a staff member. If you receive a total of 10 or more merits during your Cadet year you will receive a ribbon. Demerits are given to Cadets who misbehave and are not in proper uniform. Each demerit has to be walked off for 10 minutes. If you do not walk off the demerits you can be denied receiving your awards.
All Cadets will be assigned to a Squad. We run a weekly contest; the Squads are graded on the neatness of uniform, attendance, and promptness. At the end of each month a winning Squad is announced and that Squad will choose the game we will be playing for Tac Night (sports night). On Tac Night the Cadets must wear their uniform. They may bring a change of clothes with sneakers to play the game that evening. At the end of the season the Squad with the best overall score will be awarded the Squad of the Year Award. Each Cadet in the winning Squad will receive a ribbon. Remember it is team work.
We would like to welcome all cadets on board. We hope you have a great time. Any questions you might have please ask our Staff.
