A Message from our President, Dave German:
Hello lacrosse players, parents, and supporters,
It has been several months since we concluded our ’09 season. I would like to update you on upcoming events related to STS and Plant Lacrosse. First, I’m glad to see so many players participating in off - season activities. For the first time, we have a “South Tampa” Fire Select team with over 30 players, a middle school girls Tribe team consisting of almost entirely South Tampa girls, and many of you are playing Shooters and other elite teams with Sand Sharks and Fire. Sharpening our skills for the upcoming season is key to a successful program.
I want to remind you about a couple of key changes this year. STS youth boys and middle school girls and boys will continue with no significant changes this year. However, we are adding an STS Varsity boys program and possibly an STS JV boys depending on the numbers. These programs will consist of players primarily from Plant, Robinson, Tampa Prep and Jefferson. STS Varsity will play in the “community division” in the newly formed Sunshine State Lacrosse League (SSLL) , which is focused on community - based teams. Wesley Chapel, Fishhawk, Citrus Park are just a few of the programs which will participate in the SSLL. Our Plant Varsity will continue participating in the West Florida Lacrosse League (WFLL), which has become “in-school” only in preparation for the eventual migration to FHSAA Varsity. We will carry only one Plant JV team this year , which will consist primarily of freshmen and sophomore players attending Plant , who we believe will feed our Plant Varsity in coming years. You may recall, we had over 100 boys playing for Plant last year. With only two Plant teams this year, we have created the STS Varsity/JV for those players who are not selected for Plant’s teams. Tryouts begin with our fall scrimmages, but no decisions will be made until after the season begins in January. As with any growing sport, we are feeling the limits of our capacity for field space and coaching. We look forward to fielding competitive teams in every division.
Fall Clinics for STS are taking a different form this year. We are conducting novice/refresher clinics over specific weekends (depending on gender/age/team) as listed below. Also, we have a fall scrimmage schedule for experienced high school players and anyone interested in trying out for Plant Varsity. Please check the STS and Plant websites (www.stickslax.org and www.plantlax.com) for fall scrimmage and clinic information and registration, which will be on-line only this year.
Fall Schedule (all Sessions at Anderson Fields):
Boys High School Fall Ball (for experienced players only; must have played for an established HS or MS Program last year and be a US Lacrosse Member): Sundays, October 25th to November 22nd (3:00 to 5:00 p.m.)
Novice Boys High School Clinics: Saturday and Sunday, November 7th and 8th (12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m.)
Boys Youth and Middle School Clinics: Saturday and Sunday, December 5th and 6th (1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
Girls Middle School Clinics: Saturday, December 12th and Sunday, December 13th (1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m)
Finally, I’d like to update you on the Anderson Fields. We are planning to have lights installed on one and a half fields (1/2 field will work for practice, but not games). We now have light bids and the price tag is somewhere between $100,000 and $120,000 depending on materials and configuration. We also hope to turf the 3rd and 4th fields so all our programs can practice and play at Anderson. Until Anderson is complete, we will continue to leverage Coleman and other local fields available to us. We need your help with contributions. If lacrosse is to continue to grow and set the standard for programs in West Florida, we need facilities that will keep pace.
Thank you for your support.
