GUIDELINES REGARDING

H1N1 INFECTION

USA Hockey, with guidance from its Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Stuart, has issued the following information regarding the H1N1 infection, including some basic recommendations to reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection.

USA Hockey Recommends:

1. Provide individual water bottles. Do not share water bottles.

2. Regularly wash hands.

3. Clean workout gear for each practice/competition.

4. Keep gloves on during the traditional handshake with opponents.

Individuals with influenza may develop typical signs or symptoms of: fever (102 degrees F or greater), cough, muscle aches, runny nose, headache, or sore throat with potential for more serious complications, including pneumonia.

This year's influenza virus strain has particularly targeted children and young adults. Transmission of influenza virus may occur from the day before onset of symptoms and during the 5-7 days that these symptoms are present.

Infected individuals should stay home until signs and symptoms have resolved and they have not had a fever for at least 24 hours. The 24-hour no-fever timeline should be achieved naturally, without the aid of fever reducing medications.

STHA COACHES SCREENING

All STHA coaches, manager's, board members, and officials are required to provide background information for screening purposes.

All Coaching Staff, Volunteers, and NYSAHA Officials are required to submit a limited amount of personal information directly to a nationally-recognized organization that performs background checks on volunteers.  This allows the NYSAHA to continue to provide adequate protection to our youth hockey participants while at the same time protecting applicants from identity theft.  Your information is not printed, transmitted or shared with any parties outside of the NYSAHA Screening Committee.

Starting with the 2008/2009 season, all screenings are valid for three (3) years. Thus, all members who performed screenings last year will not be required to submit new screening information this year.

All members of the STHA who require screening for the 2009/2010 screening will be contacted directly.  If you are contacted please use the following instructions to perform the screening.  After you have completed your screening please provide the Volunteer Request Confirmation to Kirk Avery.

SOUTHERN TIER HOCKEY ASSOCIATION PARENT EDUCATION PROGRAM SCHEDULE 2009 - 2010

All sessions will be held at the BCC Ice Center Party Room (next to snack bar)

Please note that every Player must have at least one parent at one session

or they will not be allowed on the Ice.

It is important that each family attends during their assigned times so that

fire codes are not violated.

The STHA has over 500 youth participants, ages 4 to 18, and their families enjoying hockey every week from September through March.  A team sponsorship is a great way to market your business or organization to the hockey community of the Southern Tier.

NEXT BOARD MEETING

The next board meeting will be held on November 16^th, 2009 at The Relief Pitcher, 197 Conklin Avenue, Binghamton NY, beginning at 7:00 PM.

Please come out and help support youth Hockey in the Southern Tier.

STHA DECEMBER RAFFLE 2009

The STHA will be having a fundraiser during the month of December

Numbers:  000 through 999

Winners will be determined by the evening number of the New York State Lottery

The pre-sale of lottery raffle tickets will conclude on Friday, October 9th 2009.  We will begin distribution of the remaining tickets to the Travel and House division teams this weekend.  We are asking each member of the team sell 3 tickets each.  Additional tickets are available for sale if any team member would like more than 3 tickets.  Your participation in this fundraising effort is appreciated as all proceeds will go to the STHA General Fund to help offset costs for next season.  Thank you for your help.

Explanation of determining winners each day

There is a $5 donation per ticket.  Each donation entitles the participant to three daily cash prizes.  The winning number will be determined by the New York State Lottery number drawn each evening (the midday drawing will not be used).  In case no number is drawn, we will use the previous evening's number in reverse.  $50 will be awarded each Friday, $100 will be awarded December 24th, and $25 will be awarded on all other days of the month.  $5 will be awarded for one number above and $5 for one number below the drawn number.  All winners will be notified and awards paid to them. 

COACHING CLINICS

USA Hockey will be offering two (2) Coaching Clinics in the Southern Tier this year. 

The clinics will support USA Hockey CEP Level 1 or CEP Level 2

coaching certifications.

The clinics will be offered on November 14^th 2009,

and taking place at the Broome County Sheriff's Office

(155 Lt. Vanwinkle Drive, Binghamton NY 13905).

Bill Pfeiffer Memorial "Between the Pipes" Fund

The 2009/2010 "Between the Pipes" award selection process has completed. 

Recipients will be receiving notification via mail by August 28^th, 2009. 

The Between the Pipes Fund was established in 2007 to benefit members of the greater Binghamton area youth ice hockey community and to memorialize Bill Pfeiffer as a long-term supporter of youth hockey.

The STHA grows this fund with the STHA Ice Breaker Fundraiser and other events. The fund will provide the base fees associated with each age group, based on USA Hockey's standard of classification.
