Tuesday, August 8 IWPA Joules Women's National Championships Last weekend Stewarton ventured South to the Women's National Championships. This well organised event gives the girls a chance to test their skills against some tough opposition. Saturday put Stewarton against Diva's and Maywood. Diva's featured the very strong Annabel Macnaught-Davies who looks very good value off -1. An early goal by Stewarton put them in the lead but lack of experience playing together proved a deciding factor when Diva's pegged one back. MacNaught-Davies then converted a 60 yard penalty and again another penalty put paid to Stewarton's chances as they lost 3-1. The second game against Maywood, Stewarton regrouped and set off at a march. With the experienced Aurora Eastwood this should have been a tough game but with Eastwood playing the ball forward to give her less experienced team mates the chance to play and learn, Stewarton were able to romp home with an easy victory 5-1. Saturday's results put Stewarton in the Subsidiary Final against Dark Horse. The teams were well matched but countless fouls led to a slow and sticky game which frustrated both sides. The match never gained any momentum and even with Stewarton's Judith Grant hitting some marvelous long shots there still never seemed to be any pace to the game which slowly went in favour of one team then the other. Eventually Stewarton won by 3 to 3 and a half goals but this certainly was not a game to remember. |
