Paige Neville Game Winner

In the most dramatic of all possible outcomes Senior PAIGE NEVILLE scored in the 78th minute to clinch an emotional back and forth game vs. Grossmont Hills Rival Helix 3-2. After Helix scored first, Freshman KIANA QUARLES answered back with a header off of Paige's cross to make it 1-1 going into halftime. In the second half, the Cougars continued to dominate play, and their efforts paid off in the 64th minute when Junior BRITTNEY BEAM flipped throwed a ball deep into the box, and found Junior MEGAN MCDERMAND, who calmly beat two Helix defenders and the keeper to make it 2-1. The Highlanders would not give up, and with five minutes left(75th minute), Helix tied the score on a bullet from 35 yards out, that beat Senior DANICA ANCELL's valiant diving attempt.  Having seen their lead evaporate and CIF hopes fading, emotions were high and tears began to flow on the field, but the the Cougars quickly regrouped and minutes later, Paige hit the game winner!!  Thank you to all who came out in support of the team tonight, your presence was felt! Next up Mt. Carmel Tuesday time TBA by CIF.

Cougars display heart in OT loss on Golden Goal by El Capitan

Playing their best game of the season, the Cougars battled back twice to tie the score and send the game to Over Time, but in OT, El Capitan scored the game winner on a header from a corner kick. Down 1-0 going into halftime, the Cougars came out in the second half fired up and scored when Freshman JENNA HUGHES battled in front of the box and scored her first Varsity goal and tying the game 1-1. Minutes later, El Capitan scored to make it 2-1, but 15 minutes left, Freshman PAIGE NEVILLE was fouled hard in the box and Senior ALYSSA LLANOS in her last game knocked the PK deep into the net, sending the game into overtime. "I have never been more nervous in my life," stated Alyssa later.
In overtime, El Capitan ended the young Cougars fairy tell run in CIF. Coach Charlie stated, "I have never more proud of a team then I am of this one. To battle back twice to tie the game, go to Overtime in the CIF playoffs, says more of this team's heart, intestinal fortitude, and desire then any score. They were truly inspiring!" Starting 3 freshman, 4 sophomores, 2 juniors, 2 seniors and with 18 of the 22 players returning next year, and with all of the great players on JV looking to make the team next year. Coach Charlie said, "It's gonna be interesting next year, there are so many great players in the program, nothing but good can come from this CIF experience. It's gonna be fun! Is it November yet!!"

Couguars lose 2-0 to Granite Hills, but play awesome! JV ties 0-0!

Playing their best game of the season, the young Cougars shutout the Number 2 Team in the County Granite Hills on play through 78 minutes, but it was two set pieces that the older, bigger, and stronger Eagles scored on. Eagles Seniors McKenna Waitley(University of Washington) and Ashli Sandoval (USC) scored on headers leading Granite Hills to victory. Coach Charlie stated, "By far the best game, we have played as a team this year. It was amazing watching. Most of the time we had up to 9 underclassman and most of them were Freshman and Sophomores matching up against all of their college bound players. A great effort. I couldn't have been more proud of them."  Ed Francel, father of Granite Hills Senior Taryn Fancel (University of Wisconsin) said, "They remind me of our team a couple of years ago. They're good!"  Yes they are!! Senior Night Friday Night!

chelsea
Chelsea, Alyssa, Holly lead the Defense
The Cougars thought they were ready to play Valhalla and extend their unbeaten streak to 6 against the Norsemen, but Valhalla would not have any of that, completely outplaying the Cougars. Norseman Senior Lisa Marlow stated, "Tonight was our night, We were tired of losing to Steele Canyon, and we refused to lose. We really wanted this game and it showed." Coming out uninspired, the Cougars found themselves down 2-0 going into halftime, but rallied in the second half to draw the game closer on a beautiful through ball from Brittney Quarles to Melissa Saunders who calmly beat the Norsemen keeper to make it 2-1. But the rally was cut short when the Norsemen Freshman Devany Savage scored the game winner. Next up Monte Vista on Wednesday!

Cougars Hang on for 2-1 over Santana. JV wins 2-0.
The Cougars came on strong in the first half getting goals from Sierra Hartwell and Candace Newton and just missed on many other opportunities to put the game away, but going into half with the 2-0 lead, the Cougars must have felt the game was over. After Captains Alyssa Llanos, Adelina Martinez and Amy Hendel all stressed that the game wasn't over during halftime, the Cougars still came out flat and let the Sultans hang around the second half and with fifteen minutes left, the Sultans scored to make things interesting. But the Cougars with stood the challenge and came away with the win. Next up the America's Finest Classic after Christmas.

JV IN BARONS FINALS!
The Cougars JV Team made an incredible run through the Barons Tournament, beating La Costa Canyon, El Capitan, tying Mission Hills, and beating Our Lady of Peace in the Semis to advance to the Championship Game. In the finals they played West Hills in an incredible game in which the Cougars played mostly without subs due to injuires. The game was 0-0 at halftime with the Cougars dominating play, but unable to put one in the net. In the second half, West Hills scored early and looked to just finish the game playing defensive. The Cougars continued to pound the final third of the field and finally with about 8 minutes left, EMILY STEINBERG hit a 35 yard blast that floated beautifully over the keepers head into the net to tie the game at 1-1. At the end of regulation, the teams went to OT and  in the second OT, West Hills scored the golden goal for the Championship. After two tough losses the Cougars faced D3 rival El Capitan in the final game for both in the Baron's Tournament and a rematch of last year's CIF Quarterfinalist match in which EC knocked out the Cougars in Overtime. The game featured the debut of offensive star Chelsea Jenner as the Sweeper and freshman Danica Ancell as the stopper. Both played extremely well and led the defense along with Alyssa Llanos and Holly Moody. Keeper Summer Bland had 7 saves, including a diving one to save the game in the 70 minute.

Cougars stumble against Horizon.
mia
Mia Jackson
With the young Cougars opening up against Horizon in the Barons Tournament and of the best players in the County Senior Hannah Waggoner, the Cougars knew they would have to score some goals to match the powerful Horizon Squad. And for 65 minutes the Cougars played even. Despite going into halftime down 2-0, the Cougars came out for the second half fired up and scored to make 2-1 when MIA JACKSON lined a bullet from the right side through the box that a sliding MELISSA SAUNDERS knocked in for the first goal of her Varsity Career. With momentum on their side, the Cougars pounded the final third of the field, but the Horizon defense would deny any shooting opportunities for the Cougars and with 15 minutes left, Waggoner displayed her brilliant dribbling ability beating the Cougars defense and chipping Cougar keeper SUMMER BLAND to burst the Cougars bubble. Horizon added two more for 5-1 win. Next up Mission Hills!

The JV team beat La Costa Canyon 4-0 on four goals by PAIGE NEVILLE giving her 10 goals in 3 games and her second 4 goal game. After the game, Varsity Coach Charlie Cleaves called Paige at home and informed her that she would be called up to Varsity for the Mission Hills game, and stated that "Paige is the fastest player in our program and has demonstrated an ability to score goals, which we need right now with some of the injures we have. I believe that she will give us the ability to stretch the field and give us another weapon up top, especially on the Mission Hills turf field."

The Cougars battled for 105 minutes against El Capitan in an epic defensive war. JANEL SANCHEZ, AMANDA ROBBINS, ALYSSA LLANOS, HOLLY MOODY, and SUMMER BLAND played an incredible game, but in injury time after over-time had ended, El Capitan scored on a loose ball to send El Capitan to Semi-Finals. As devastating as the loss was, Coach Charlie stated, "The girls have nothing to hang their heads down for. They were amazing all year. I'm so proud of their efforts tonight. It's tough, but with only three seniors playing, the girls have picked up some valuable expereince that can only help this program in the years to come."

Coach Charlie, stated, "It  was a coming out party for Sierra. Her potential has always been there, and tonight, stepping up for Court, she was our playmaker, and the cross to Chelsea was classic soccer at it's very best!  A great win, but now we must focus on El Capitan on Friday."

DRAMATIC ENDING FOR 13th WIN!

It was Senior Appreciation Night. The roses were ready. The Balloons were ready. Cameras were ready. The score was 1-0 over Monte Vista with 15 minutes left. Everything was place for the ceremonies to begin, except for one thing. Monte Vista scored to tie the game! In a bizarre twist of fate, Monte Vista scored to stun the Cougars and their plans, sending the game into a frenzy and setting up a BRITTANY QUARLES dramantic goal with less then 2 minutes to play. Starting with MIA JACKSON's cross into the box, numerous Cougars took shots in the crowded box, all resulting in hitting the crossbar, or blocks by the Monte Vista Goal Keeper and defenders. Finally Brittany tapped in the winning goal, giving Coach Charlie Cleaves time to call out Seniors COURTNEY CLEAVES, JANEL SANCHEZ, JENNIFER SCHAFER and AMANDA ROBBINS to the acknowledgment of the crowd. In their last home game of the season, the Cougars won their 13th game of the season to set an all-time record for wins for the program with 2 games left in the regular season. Next up Granite Hills on Tuesday!

EMILY MONFORT and JENNIFER SCHAFER scored for the Cougars in a game that showcased the centermid playof COURTNEY CLEAVES, BRITTNEY QUARLES and ADELINA MARTINEZ. The three completely dominated the middle of the field, placing ball after ball into the final third of the field. Next up #4 Granite Hills at Steele Canyon!

COUGARS SWEEP VALHALLA!

STEELE CANYON - 1    VALHALLA - 0

In an epic game between neighborhood rivals, the Cougars won 1-0 before hundreds of fans celebrating the turning of the lights for the first time in school history. Like a heavyweight championship fight, the Norseman and Cougars slugged it out for 80 intense minutes of exciting soccer. Late in the first half, CHELSEA JENNER scored an incredible goal jumping high into the air heading JENNIFER SCHAFER's corner kick into the net for the game winner. Seniors JANEL SANCHEZ, AMANDA ROBBINS, COURTNEY CLEAVES, and JENNIFER SCHAFER led the Cougars inspiring their underclass teammates with their intensity. When asked if the team was ready to play, Captain JANEL SANCHEZ simply stated, "It's Valhalla!" In the JV Game, the Cougars also won 1-0 in a great game. Next up Monte Vista on Tuesday!

Cougars lose opener!

The Cougars arrived for the 4:30pm game at 4:24 and never got ready to play, losing to Helix 3-0 in the Grossmont South League Opener. After beating the Highlanders last month 3-2, the Cougars never threatened as Helix dominated play throughout the game. Coach Charlie stated, "I don't want to blame the bus issue, but it's very hard to get ready to play a 90 minute match with a limited warm-up. By the time we're warm-up, we're down and it's extremely hard to come back on a very good team like Helix. This happens everytime we ride the bus. I'm done with transportation. It's not worth having the girls not ready to play these tough league games. But again, late or not, we did not arrive to play this very important game. Hopefully the girls get up for Valhalla. I believe they will!"

JENNIFER!
With minutes left in a 1-1 game vs. OLP, JENNIFER SCHAFER spinned and from 30 yards out blasted a ball into the left corner of the net for the game winner. As dramatic as any goal/win in SC's history, the Cougars survived without some key players and falling behind 1-0 late in the second half. But with approximately 18 minutes left, CHELSEA JENNER stripped the OLP keeper and scored to even the score and setting up Jennifer's game winner. The win would not have been possible without GILLIAN HUGHES and BETHANY RANGEL stepping up in starting roles, helping JANEL SANCHEZ and ALYSSA LLANOS shut down OLP. Coach Charlie stated, "Gillian and Bethany played an incredible game for us, and Jennifer's goal was just unbelievable. She had taken some big shots throughout the game, and I was surprised that even  from that far out, OLP didn't step up to defend it." OLP's sweeper JESSICA ACEVES stated, "I didn't think she was going to shoot!"  A great win against a D3 Rival with seedings on the line. Next up West Hills after the break. The win moved the Cougars to 8-3!

Cougars move to 6-1!
The winning week continued with wins over Pt. Loma 4-0, and Grossmont 3-1. In the Pt. Loma game, BRITTANY QUARLES scored her first varsity goal and JANEL SANCHEZ scored for the second game in a row on a beautiful header off JENNIFER SCHAFER's corner kick. Adding goals were Jennifer and EMILY MONFORT on a beautiful 30 yard shot that left the crowd awed!

In the Grossmont game, JENNIFER SCHAFER scored on a PK and an incredible set piece from 25 yards out. Slowly coming back from her severe ankle injury COURTNEY CLEAVES added a goal and had an assist. ADELINA MARTINEZ also coming back from injuires played in her best game to date leading the offense. But once again, the defense led by JANEL SANCHEZ, AMANDA ROBBINS, ALYSSA ILANOS and HOLLY MOODY stymied both Pt. Loma and Grossmont leading the Cougars to a 6-1 record.

Cougars start slow, win 2-0 over Santana!
Arriving at 4:34pm for the 4:30pm, the Cougars used the first half to warmup and then proceeded to shutout Santana 2-0. Another awesome game by the defense and goalkeepers SUMMER BLAND and LAUREN RADICE paced the Cougars and their fourth win a row, moving the team to 7-1. COURTNEY CLEAVES led the offense, assisting on both goals for JENNFIER SCHAFER and CHELSEA JENNER. MIA JACKSON's cross from Courtney's through pass to Chelsea in the opening minute of the second half set the tone for the half as the Cougars dominated the Sultans.

In the JV game, the Cougars won 2-0 on goals by CANDICE NEWTON and MELISSA SAUNDERS, moving the JV Cougars to 6-1-1. Next up Vasqueros Tournament!

Cougars rebound, beat Helix 3-2!
The Cougars rebounded from Saturday's loss to San Pasqual, winning 3-2 at home against league rival Helix in the Barons Tournament. Helix scored three minutes into the game stunning the Cougars, but SC quickly recovered scoring 3 unanswered goals by CHELSEA JENNER, JENNIFER SCHAFER, and JANEL SANCHEZ's incredible running header on off Jennifer's corner kick. Defensively, HOLLY MOODY, ALYSSA LLANOS, BETHANY RANGEL, AMANDA ROBBINS, and JANEL SANCHEZ stepped up winning numerous key balls in the air in stopping Helix. Freshmen MIA JACKSON, and BRITTANY QUARLES continued their impressive first season assisting the Cougars on the winning goal. Next up Pt. Loma @ Home.

Cougars fall to San Pasqual at Barons. JV ties!
The Cougars fell to San Pasqual 5-1 to open the Baron's Tournament. In a game that San Pasqual dominated throughout, the Cougars managed just a couple of shots and only one quality scoring opportunity when CHELSEA JENNER was taken down in the box. On the penalty kick, JENNIFER SCHAFER blasted a ball pass the San Pasqual keeper making the score 3-1, but it would be the closest the Cougars would get.

In the JV game, Steele Canyon and San Pasqual fought to 1-1 tie in a great game at Bonita High School. Down 1-0 late in the game, JESSICA HARTNETT  on a break away placed a beautiful shot over the charging keeper for the equalizer.

Varsity and JV move to 3-0 with wins!
With dominating wins over Mar Vista and Montgomery, Varsity and JV moved to 3-0 going into the Barons Tournament this weekend. Led by KELSEY EASTERLY's 2 goals and MIA JACKSON's breakaway goal late in the 2nd half, the Cougars won 3-0 over Montgomery.

In the JV game, the Cougars scored often and early, winning 10-0 over Montgomery. Details coming...

Next up Barons Tournament!

Cougars impressive at San Marcos!
The Cougars traveled to San Marcos and opened their season with impressive wins. In their first Varsity game, Freshman MIA JACKSON (2) and SIERRA HARTWELL scored and played well in their debut. Also, scoring were BETHANY RANGEL, and Senior JENNIFER SCHAFER, who played in her first game since breaking her ankle in July. Despite still not being 100%, JENNIFER and COURTNEY CLEAVES, also playing her first soccer since August due to an ankle injury played well, showing glimpses of their All League performanaces from last year. The defense was led by Seniors JANEL SANCHEZ AMANDA ROBBINS, HOLLY MOODY, and ALYSSA LLANOS. The shutout was recorded by SUMMER BLAND, HILARY GASTRICH and LAUREN RADICE.

In the JV game, JESSICA HARTNETT, SQUEAKY PERUCHITI and CANDICE NEWTON each scored leading the Cougars to a 3-0 win over the Knights. Next up Mar Vista today @ 3:00pm at SCHS!

Freshman lead the Way over Monte Vista!

A let down was waiting after the Cougar win vs. Valhalla Wednesday, but the team pulled through in a constant down pour to win 2-0 over Monte Vista. Goals by Freshman ALLIE BAILEY and SUMMER BLAND were all the Cougars needed as the defense led by DELCIE THANKACHAN, JANEL SANCHEZ, JOHANNA SHAFFER, and BECCA SANDERS denied any opportunity for Monte Vista to put together any threats. CARMEN URIBE and SUMMER BLAND combined for the shutout. Allie's shot was set up by LISA MIX's through ball, that Allie struck first touch into the far corner of the net. Goal Keeper Summer scored the first goal of her entire career on a PK, set up by COURTNEY CLEAVES take down in the box after dribbling through 3 Monte Vista defenders. Next up Granite Hills Wednesday @ home.

STEELE CANYON - 3   VALHALLA - 1

The Seniors (Becca Sanders,Lisa Mix, Sarah Young, Delcie Thankachan, Suzanne MacNaughton, Jill Feinberg, Johanna Shaffer) playing in their last game vs. Valhalla dominated play throughout the game. They led 1-0 going into halftime, when Courtney Cleaves made a dribbling run down the left side of the field and crossed to Amanda Robbins, who one touched it to Lisa Mix who beat GK Dani O’Brien on a nice shot into the left corner. The second goal was scored by a header from Sarah on a long throw in from Lisa Mix. Late in the second half, Valhalla scored to make it 2-1, but Lisa Mix scored on a shot from the 18 yard line on a beautiful through ball from Courtney Cleaves to clinch the victory. Coach Charlie stated, "Great win for our Seniors, and team. They were determined, and able to put the heartbreak loss to Helix on Friday behind them."

Heartbreak!
After winning at Mt. Miguel 6-0 on goals by LISA MIX, COURTNEY CLEAVES, JANEL SANCHEZ, ALI MENDOZA, BECCA SANDERS, and JILL FEINBERG, the Cougars traveled to Helix for their usual war against the Highlanders. The Cougars defense led by BECCA SANDERS, DELCIE THANAKCHAN, JOHANNA SCHAFFER, and JANEL SANCHEZ.dominated for the first 70 minutes of the game shutting out Helix and starting the offense with great service to forwards LISA MIX, AMANDA ROBBINS, and JILL FEINBERG. But the Helix defense playing the off-side trap stymied the Cougars time and time again on offside calls. Finally in the 70th minutes, JOHANNA SCHAFFER collected a loose ball off LISA MIX's throw in, beat a Helix defender and placed the ball into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. With the defense playing at it's best, a Cougar win seemed likely, but Helix refused to lose, and with 5 minutes left in the game, scored to tie the game; and then quickly followed with an another goal with minutes left that left  the Cougars stunned. Coach Charlie Cleaves stated, "My stomach is sick, the girls played an incredible game, and for this to happen to them, is unbearable. The pain of this loss can never go away, we must never forgot it, we must use it as reminder that the game is never over, until the final whistle. We must  figure out a way to win these big games. Hopefully we can. Valhalla is coming Wednesday!!"

Cougars Cruise.........
After an intense week of league games, the Cougars made up an rain game with El Cajon Valley at El Cajon tonight. With the starters sitting except for a few minutes of the game, the Cougars were led by their talented  Freshmen EMILY MONFORT (2 goals), ALLIE BAILEY (1 goal), and CARMEN URIBE, who scored the first goal of her Varsity career. Other goals were scored by COURTNEY CLEAVES, LISA MIX, MARY BELT, and JENNIFER SCHAFER. NAOMI CARDENAS playing in her first varsity game registered the shutout. Next up Monte Vista on Wednesday.

League Starts!

What a week! First the team welcomed JOHANNA and JENNIFER SCHEAFER to the team from North Carolina. The two talented sisters have added maturity to the young program and had an immediate impact for the Cougars. First up was Helix. Despite losing 1-0, the Cougars dominated the game throughout, but let Helix hang around long enough to score late in the second half. The Cougars wasted many scoring opportunitities, including numerous breakways that just missed that would have put the game out of reach in the 1st half. In second half, it was more the same, as the Cougars were frustrated from finding the back of the net. Captain BECCA SANDERS stated, "Obvisouly, we did not play our game. Very frustrating, because if we could have just finished a couple of the scoring chances, we would have won easily."

Then came Valhalla at Valhalla. Cousin vs. Cousin! Uncle vs. niece! Club Teammates vs. Teammates! Club coach vs. club players! The air was filled with drama before the game started, and once it did start, it was non stop high drama action as Valhalla struck first on JENNIFER DRIVIK's 40 yard flip throw into the box, which was knocked passed a diving DELCIE THANKACHAN. DELCIE playing keeper for the first time since she was 10 years old, played incredible through out the game in the absence of injured keepers SUMMER BLAND and CARMEN URIBE. The Cougars evened the score 1-1 late in the first half when COURTNEY CLEAVES headed a ball pass club teammate DANI O'BRIEN in a wild exchange in front of then net. COURTNEY's goal was set up by BECCA SANDERS' shot that hit the crossbar after two shots by SARAH YOUNG and AMANDA ROBBINS. Coming out of halftime, the Cougars were flat as Valhalla was relentless in trying to score. With each DRIVIK flip throw, the Cougars held their breath, as the defense led by JANEL SANCHEZ cleared the ball, and attempted to transition without much luck. Finally late in the 2nd half the Cougars put together a string of scoring opportunitiites that Valhalla survived and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Having coached most of the Valhalla players over the years in Club, Coach Charlie stated, "That was the most gut wrenching game I have ever been a part of. Not only did I have to face my niece LISA MARLOW, and Valhalla players that I have coached since they were 10 years old, all summer we worked on JENNIFER DRIVIK's throw ins for our club season. She literally turned every ball out of abounds into a scoring chance for Valhalla. I'm pretty sure that I wll have nightmares leading up to our rematch!" Next up El Cajon Valley on Monday.

Youthful keeper inexperiences catch up to Cougars.
Four minutes into the game, COURTNEY CLEAVES' dribbling run down the sideline and flick pass to a streaking DELCIE THANKACHAN easily beat the keeper 1v1 and had the Cougars up 1-0 against a senior laden and powerful West Hills team. But like a heavyweight champion stunned from a counter punch, West Hills evened the score less then 2 minutes later. The Cougars played even and had quality opportunities to score throughout the 1st half, but weren't able to find the net. After making numerous dives to stop West Hills, Freshman keeper CARMEN URIBE misjudged a ball from a West Hills direct kick that slipped through her hands at the 38th minute to send West Hills into halftime up 2-1. Quickly in the second half, the Cougars realized that a win was not to be, as the Cougar's other talented Freshman Keeper SUMMER BLAND failed to catch balls that gave the West Hills forwards easy second chances that they converted for goals and left the Cougars stunned. Despite the final score, Coach Cleaves stated, "CARMEN and SUMMER have been incredible this year, and are a big reason for our success. They will learn from this game, and be better for it. West Hills with all of those seniors are of the best teams in the County, people will see the score, and say we were over matched, but we know better, with CARMEN and SUMMER at their best, this game is 1-1!" The loss was the first in the county for the Cougars. Next up Helix and League play.

Cougars frustrated in tie with Santana.
Despite dominating the entire game, the Cougars were unable to add to their 1-0 score and with 12 minutes left, Santana scored on a counter off a Cougar corner kick. The Cougar goal was set up by a brillant 40 yard dribbling run from box to box by COURTNEY CLEAVES, in which she beat 4 Santana players and passed to EMILY MONFORT, who calmly one touched the ball into the back of the net. Coach Charlie stated, "Courtney's dribbling run was awesome, but in the end the game's result was very frustrating. If us missing 5 open net goals was not enough, our lack of intensity after the Santana goal was even worse. We are really going to have to pick up our mental game if we are to compete for league and CIF titles." Next up, El Cajon Valley on Friday.

Cougars shutout Grossmont 2-0!

After playing the worst half of their season to date, the Cougars were still tied with the Grossmont 0-0. After an inspirating talk by the coaches and players, the Cougars woke up and scored two goals in dominating the 2nd half. With her Club obligations done, DELCIE THANKACHAN made her first appearance of the year by assisting to LISA MIX for a one touch shot that found the net. On the second goal, Freshman EMILY MONFORT dribbled to the corner, beat two defenders, giving her space to deliver a beautiful cross that JILL FEINBERG headed deep into the net. SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON and SARAH YOUNG again led the defense by shutting down Grossmont's forwards. The win moved the Cougars unbeaten streak to 6 and undefeated heading to Las Veags.

Freshman Keepers Shine!

With last years goalkeepers JESSICA BRUCE and JOY BLAND graduted, the Cougars have turned to Freshman CARMEN URIBE and SUMMER BLAND to lead them this season. And the two talented first year players have responded allowing only one goal and recording 25 saves helping the team go 3-0-2 to start the season. Awesome!

COUGARS ATTACK MONTGOMERY!
The Cougars traveled to Division 1 Montgomery and came away with 8-0 win on a cold wet day. LISA MIX led the way with a hat-trick, and the defense led by BECCA SANDERS, SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON, SARAH YOUNG, and AMANDA ROBBINS shut down Montgomery's every offensive threat. Adding goal were JILL FEINBERG, COURTNEY CLEAVES, ALLIE BAILEY, ADELINA MARTINEZ, and BECCA SANDERS. COURTNEY and LISA also added 2 assists a piece. SUMMER BLAND and CARMEN combined to record their 2nd shutout of the season.

COUGARS OPEN SEASON!
The Cougars opened the season with a 3-0 win over Division 3 Rival Otay Ranch at the Otay Ranch Stadium. LISA MIX opened the scoring early in the 1st half, and the Cougars went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. In the second half, SARAH YOUNG placed a beautiful corner kick into the box, where BECCA SANDERS headed the ball deep into the net. Freshman EMILY MONFORT added a late goal, by heading LISA MIX's long throw in for her first goal of her high school career. But the difference in the game was the Cougar defense and the marking of  Otay Ranch's top scorer BRITNEY BENNETT by JANEL SANCHEZ and SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON. JANEL and SUZANNE completely blanketed last years top scorer.  CAPTAIN BECCA SANDERS, SARAH YOUNG,  and AMANDA YOUNG anchored the defense, and Freshman CARMEN URIBE and SUMMER BLAND registered the first shutout of their high school careers. AWESOME!

JV opened their season with a dominating 13-0 win over Otay Ranch. Goals came fast and often! AMANDA PERUCHITI scored a hat-trick (3 goals), CECILY CARRILLO had 2 goals, and adding 1 goal each were KELSEY EASTERLY, AMY HENDEL, ALY TIMMERMAN,  CHELSEA JENNER, HILLARY GASTRICH, GILLIAN HUGHES, ALISON ARAGON, and STELLO MUNRON. Varsity plays well at Granite. JV wins at home!
The score was not indictive of the game on the field, but for 80 minutes the Cougars gave #4 ranked Granite Hills a game that they actually felt their 15 game winning streak might be in Jeopardy. With LISA MIX playing behind sweeper BECCA SANDERS, and AMANDA ROBBINS and DELCIE THANKACHAN playing forward, the Cougars battled in front of the goal just missing some early opportunities. In the second half COURTNEY CLEAVES nicely kicked a left footed 18 shot yard shot underneath the diving Granite Hills goal keeper to make the game 3-1, but in the end fell 4-1. Once again the Cougars fell victim to defensive miscues from balls in and around the 8 yard area. MARY BELT in her Varsity debut played impressively displaying her incredible speed on the outside.

JV WINS! The JV team played their most impressive game to date winning 3-0 over Granite Hills at the Steele Canyon Women's Soccer Complex. Details to follow.........

Cougars win over Mt. Miguel!
LISA MIX scored her second hat trick of the season, and 51st goal of her Cougar career in a 5-0 win at Mt. Miguel. Going into halftime with only a 1-0 lead, the Cougars came out inspired in the second half scoring four unanswered goals before the 60 minute, and playing great defense by DELCIE THANKACHAN, BECCA SANDERS, JANEL SANCHEZ, SARAH YOUNG, SARAH DIEM, WHITNEY WHITE, and SUZANNE MACNAUGTON. DELCIE playing in her first game at sweeper in over a year continues her recovery from the ACL injury that has kept her out since the summer. But the key to this game was the play of Midfielders MEGAN VARNEY, COURTNEY CLEAVES, MARY BELT, ALI MENDOZA, ADELINA MENDOZA who placed a ton of balls in the final third of the field for scoring opportunites. AMANDA ROBBINS making her second start at forward scored her first career varsity goal, and COURTNEY CLEAVES added a breakaway goal on a beautiful through ball from DELCIE THANKACHAN.

JV WINS also at Mt. Miguel!! Details to follow...... Next up Helix at home Thursday!!

Cougars miss playoffs!
2004
After reaching the Quarterfinals of the CIF Playoffs the last two years, the Cougars missed the post season due to a very strong Division 3 bracket. The bracket included 6 League champs and the three D3 teams that the Cougars lost to this year. The seedings:

1. University San Diego High School (League Champ)
2. Westview (League Champ)
3. Our Lady of Peace
4. University City (League Champ)
5. San Dieguito (League Champ)
6. Coronado
7. Serra
8. La Jolla
9. Pt Loma
10. Clairemont (League Champ)
11. Santana
12. Central Valley (League Champ)

Basically it came down to our loses against Coronado, Pt. Loma and Santana. That's how close we came to getting in, despite our crazy season. Hopefully we will never forget that 2-0 loss to Pt. Loma on our home field!!

Cougars at City College for Girls Sports Festival!
city2
Cougars DELCIE THANKACHAN, JILL FEINBERG, COURTNEY CLEAVES, AMANDA ROBBINS, JANEL SANCHEZ, ADELINA MARTINEZ, and Coach Charlie Cleaves spent Saturday at the CITY COLLEGE SPORTS FESTIVAL for GIRLS. The event sponored by CITY COLLEGE and CITY COLLEGE WOMEN's SOCCER Coach ANDI MILBURN drew over 400 inner city girls for a day of sports and fun. COACH ANDI and the Cougars were in charge of the Soccer Portion of the festival and more than one festival participant was heard to say, "I loved soccer the best!" The participants moved along throughout the day playing different sports, and enjoying lunch with the various volunteers from the sports world, including our Cougars! For the girls it was a chance to be exposed to sports, but for our Cougars it was a chance to help the community and be a positive role model for young girls without many role models. Awesome!

Cougars, Helix Battle!
In the very first game on Helix's brand new turf, the Cougars lost to Helix 3-2, but once again played incredibly well, except for a 10 minute defensive lapse beginning the 2nd half. With the game tied 0-0 starting the 2nd half, HELIX scored within a minute to start the 2nd half on goal that bounced off the back of a Helix player into a open net. Within 2 minutes, Helix scored again, and then 5 minutes later, Helix scored again to make it 3-0. The Cougars stunned, rattled, and seemingly knocked out, regained their composure and made the score 3-2 on two LISA MIX's goals, the last one coming with 12 minutes left in the game. With the momentum clearly on their side, the Cougars threatened over and over again to tie the game, but in the end, Helix hung on for the victory. In goal, Senior JESSI BRUCE played brilliantly and continued her run at ALL LEAGUE Honors. Up next VALHALLA! on Thursday at Valhalla!

2-2 again for Varsity. JV WINS BIG!
The Cougars continue to be gracious hosts and allowed the 3rd team this year to come back down two goals late in the game and tie the game. First it was East Lake, then Valhalla, and last night Mt. Miguel. In what is becoming a very crazy season, the Cougars COURTNEY CLEAVES scored from LISA MIX'S beautiful cross 57 seconds into the game. LISA later in the half dribbled through the Mt. Miguel defense and beat the keeper to make it 2-0 at halftime. With everything seeming to be place for a victory quickly unfolded and Mt. Miguel tied the game on 2 very nice shots, the last one coming with 3 minutes left in the game. Coach Cleaves stated, "We are being tested as coaches, players, and as a team. Yes, this is a very frustrating result, and one of many this season, but how we deal with this frustation will determine our future."

In the JV Game, the Cougars won big 6-0! TORREY INNISS had two goals, MARY BELT, MIRIAM RUIZ, KELSEY EASTERLY, and ALLY TIMMERMAN added goals to pace the Cougars past Mt. Miguel. The team coached by TOM NOAKES continues to play extemely well, and moved to 2-2 in League play. Next up Helix on Tuesday!

Jessi saves, and saves, and saves, and saves...
As the number 4 rated team in the County, Granite Hills came to visit the Cougars not knowing what to expect from the up and down Cougars. What they got was a inspired Steele Canyon team, and a goal keeper that had a career night. Senior JESSI BRUCE had a team record 18 saves, and displayed leadership sorely missed so far this season. Her inspiring play lifted her team with each save. Defenders BECCA SANDERS, AMANDA ROBBINS, SUZANNE MACNAUGTON, JILL FEINBERG, SARAH YOUNG, EMELY RODRIGUEZ, and SARAH DIEM denied Granite Hills allowing only a corner kick goal that bounced around the box, before being kicked in, and a long throw in that was headed into the net. The Cougars once again proved they can play with anybody, and await the rematch. Next up Mt. Miguel on Thursday!

ANDI GOING BACK TO COLLEGE!!!
Steele Canyon High School Assistant Varsity Coach ANDI MILBURN has been named Head Coach at San Diego City College. The Regis University and Valhalla graduate will take over a program that has been struggling for the last couple of years. Andi stated, "I'm ready for the challenge, and excitement of building a successful program." Congrats!!

COUGARS OPEN LEAGUE PLAY!
Within minutes of closing out the biggest league win in their young program, the Cougars allowed the tying goal to visiting Valhalla, and settled for the 2-2. With the Cougars leading 2-0 with 15 minutes left, the referees called a controversial PK that left the Cougars and the home crowd watching as Valhalla's MARESA BAILEY converted the shot. With the huge momentum swing, the Norseman with renewed fight came back hard and got the equalizer when LYDIA JACKSON pushed a ball pass Goal Keeper JOY BLAND. Despite the heartbreaking tie, the Cougars showed incredible heart throughout the game and deserved better. ALI MENDOZA's incredible clutch goal with 2 defenders on her back and the keeper in her face had the Cougars up 1-0 at halftime. In the second half, EMELY RODRIGUEZ kicked a 50 yard ball that bounced high and over the Valhalla keeper's head to put the Cougars up 2-0. Coach Cleaves stated, "Another step for our program. As we continue to grow, we will learn how to close out and win these type of games. A great effort though. I'm very proud of the girls!" Next up, Monte Vista!!

Cougars Roll!
The Cougars scored 10 unanswered goals in the 1st Half against El Cajon Valley and went onto win 10-0 in their final tune up before league starts on January 20th. COURTNEY CLEAVES started the scoring off quickly in the 5th minute of the game with a shot from the top of the box. After that the goals came quickly, and often, highlighted by ALI MENDOZA playing in her first Varsity game, scoring a hat-trick! JILL FEINBERG, JANEL SANCHEZ, SARAH DIEM, and LISA MIX's 2 goals added to the offensive show. But the highlight of the half was Goal Keeper JESSI BRUCE's PK goal. As the crowd stood to their feet, the Senior Keeper jogged from her goal box down the field, and calmly placed a shot in the left corner, beating the El Cajon Keeper for the first goal of her Varsity Career! In the second half, the Cougars played possession and tight defense led by BECCA SANDERS, AMANDA ROBBINS, SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON, LAUREN KIME, WHITNEY WHITE, SARAH DIEM, and in Goal LISA MIX for the shutout. Next up Valhalla!!

FRESHMAN MAKING THEIR MARK!
The Freshman Team completed an impressive week of soccer, beating Santana 2-1, losing to Grossmont 6-4, and then winning very impressively against Valhalla 3-0! Coach BRIAN ARNOLD stated, "the girls are starting to put some passes together, and getting into the final 1/3 for some scoring chances." Great Job Freshman!! Next up OLP Saturday at 9:00am!!

Cougars roar, but lose to Grossmont!
The Cougars played their best game of the season despite losing to a very good Grossmont Team 3-1. Led by Seniors JOY BLAND, JESSI BRUCE, SARAH DIEM, EMELY RODRIGUEZ, LINDSEY SIMPSON, MEGAN VARNEY, and WHITNEY WHITE, the team played with emotion, and heart throughout the game. Depsite an injury that kept her out the entire game except the last ten minutes, LISA MIX scored on a perfectly executed Counter-Attack breakaway goal. On the goal, LISA refused to be denied, finally beating Grossmont's sweeper and keeper after a 30 yard run. Next up, El Cajon Valley.

Cougars split with Pt. Loma.
In the first game back from the Christmas break, the Varsity Team still without key players from the line up, lost 2-0 to visiting Division 3 Rival Pt. Loma. With DELCIE THANKACHAN and EMILY RODRIGUEZ watching from the sidelines, the Cougars and Pt. Loma went into halftime tied 0-0. The defensive battle continued late into the second half, until Pt. Loma scored twice on Cougar defensive mistakes. The offense was held scoreless for the 2nd game in a row, and Coach Cleaves, after the game stated, "The girls came out flat, lacked intensity, and really didn't understand the importance of the game. Hopefully the team will step up soon." Not all was lost as JV won convincingly 4-1, in their first game without ALI MENDOZA who was pulled up to Varsity. Next up, Grossmont Thursday!!

Cougars roar back, win 6-2!
With the CIF Football Playoffs still fresh in the cold air, the Cougars found themselves down to 2-0 to Division 3 rival Mission Bay late in the first half when AMANDA ROBBINS played a beautiful ball down the left side of the field to a streaking SARAH YOUNG, who one touched the ball to LISA MIX, who placed the ball into the back of the net as the second half ended. The Cougars came out of second half determined to avenge their football friends and scored 5 unanswered goals. COURTNEY CLEAVES tied the game with a goal from LISA MIX's corner kick. Minutes later, BECCA SANDERS converted a PK to put the Cougars ahead to stay. LISA MIX added two breakaway goals to finish the game with her 2nd career hat trick. Finishing off the scoring was Freshman LAUREN KIME, who scored her first varsity goal, and the first goal in her life! The talented freshman has always played defender and is enjoying playing midfield and forward!
Next up, Santana on Tuesday December 16th!

Heartbreak.................
Santa Fe Christian dealt the Cougars their first home lose of the season with 2 late goals in the final minutes to win 4-3. The Cougars still trying to put it all together and find themselves were down 2-0
just 10 minutes into the game, but fought back to take a 3-2 lead on goals by BECCA SANDERS, COURTNEY CLEAVES, and LISA MIX. Just as the Cougars appeared to take control and put the game away, Santa Fe Christian scored on 2 breakaway goals, the last one with just 3 minutes left that sealed the win. Next up, Mission Bay at the Steele Canyon Soccer Complex.

COUGARS COMEBACK!
The Cougars rebounded from Saturday's loss to Coronado in the opening game of the Barons Tournament, with a dramatic 3-2 win over Chula Vista at the Steele Canyon Women's Soccer Complex. The Cougars led 1-0 at halftime following LISA MIX's breakaway goal from the first of many quality through balls from COURTNEY CLEAVES. In the second half, Chula Vista scored on two breakaway goals that left the Cougars stunned, and down 2-1. In the 63rd minute, LISA MIX delivered a corner kick perfectly to BECCA SANDERS in front of the goal that BECCA headed into the net to tie the match 2-2. For the next 17 minutes, the Cougars pounced on the goal, but failed to find the net on many point blank shots on the goal. With time under 3 minutes, MEGAN VARNEY found LISA MIX in front of the goal, and LISA beat the keeper for the game winner! SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON playing in her usual star-killer rule shadowed and defended Chula Vista's incredible forward all night and saved the game with a brillant run and tackle in the final minute! Next up, Santa Fe Christian!

Cougars and Eastlake tie!
In a game that felt like a CIF playoff Championship, the Cougars survived a dramatic Eastlake comeback 2-2. Eastlake down 2-0 with 15 minutes left, tied the game with under 3 minutes to play, on some very phyical play. For over 60 minutes of play, the Cougars dominated the action with LISA MIX scoring 2 goals. One from a beautiful cross from JILL FEINBERG, and the other on a breakaway that LISA calmy beat Eastlake's Keeper ASHLEY MOORE. This year's match once again pitted 15 club teammates against each other for added drama!! Can't wait till next year!

Cougars open season!
The Cougars opened the 2003-2004 Season with a dominating 6-0 win over Montgomery High School @ the Steele Canyon Women's Soccer Complex. Goalkeepers JESSI BRUCE, JOY BLAND, and CECILA CARRILLO playing in her Varsity game recored the first shutout of the year. Leading the defense BECCA SANDERS, SARAH YOUNG, SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON, AMANDA ROBBINS, EMILY RODRIGUEZ, and JANEL SANCHEZ eliminated any threat from the Aztecs. On the offense side, LISA MIX and JILL FEINBERG each scored two goals, while COURTNEY CLEAVES and MEGAN VARNEY added goals. Despite the six goals scored by the Cougars, the offense struggled in the box, not being able to finish many quality scoring opportunites. But, overall a great start to the season! Next up, South Bay rival Eastlake!!

In a dramatic game without seven players, JILL FEINBERG scored the Golden Goal winner in the 8th minute of the sudden death overtime over Clairemont High 2-1! The goal was set up by LISA MIX's breakaway that Clairemont's goalkeeper blocked, but JILL was there to put it in the back of the net. DELCIE THANKACHAN led off the scoring in the first half from a beauiful play from first LINDSEY SIMPSON, and then COURTNEY CLEAVES, who crossed from the right side to DELCIE who made a diving first touch that beat the keeper. The Cougars held the lead all the way to the 70th minute, when Clairemont was able to score on an unbelievable shot into the upper right corner of the goal. But in the end, it the Cougars defense led by Sweeper BECCA SANDERS, AMANDA ROBBINS, SUZANNE MACNAUGHTON, SARAH YOUNG, and Goalkeeper JESSI BRUCE, who made three incedible game saving saves to secure the win. Cougars end season in CIF Quarterfinals!
The Cougars remarkable season came to an end against #1 seed Francis Parker in the CIF Playoffs Quarterfinals, losing 3-0. Except for the 1st 15 minutes, the Cougars played the senior laden Francis Parker Team even. But it was those first 15 minutes that the game was won. The Cougars came out a little tentative not wanting to make mistakes and gave the Parker girls to much space that resulted in 2 early goals. The Cougars rebounded and played an inspiring 2nd half that resulted in many scoring opportunities and left all that watched the game pondering the future for this talented bunch of Freshman and Sophomores!

After a week of very stressful tryouts for the 65 players that came out for this year's teams, the teams have been selected for this year. Thanks to everyone that came out, and congratulations to all of the players that made the BLUE and WHITE JV Teams!

The BLUE team is the JV Team that will compete in the Grossmont League. The WHITE team is a developmental team that will be coached by TOM NOAKES, with the goal of preparing as many players for the JV and Varsity teams that will be formed next year. Our goal in forming the teams, was to build a program for the future, and the girls were selected not only on their playing ability today, but on their potential for the next few years! We are very excited about the future, but it will take a lot of hard work in the next few years to achieve our goal to win a CIF Title!!

Cougars lose on Golden Goal in OT.
