Coach Mike Gatt retires; Coach Jeff Sugg takes over St. Edith Football

Sugg1
Coach Jeff Sugg named Varsity #1 Head Coach
Dear St. Edith Football Community,

As many of you know, our coach Mike Gatt has stepped down from his role as the head football coach of St. Edith Varsity One team. I wish to talk about this in greater detail later in this note.

At St. Edith we are very fortunate and I am pleased to announce to our parents that Jeff Sugg will be our new head football coach for St. Edith Football.  Jeff has been a part of our program for five years, and has coached on the Varsity 1 team for the past two years. Jeff has a great deal of football  knowledge and experience, including the experience of having played for the University of Toledo during his college days.

Jeff and his wife Danielle are members of St. Kenneth parish, and they have three boys. Their oldest boy, Jeffrey is a sophmore at Catholic Central, their son Andrew is a 7th grader and is playing football and basketball at St. Edith CYO, and their youngest son Alex is a second grader. We are sorry to see Mike Gatt retire, but we are fortunate to have such a fine leader as Jeff ready to step into the role.

I also want to thank Mike Gatt for his years of coaching within the St. Edith program, including the last two as the head coach. Mike and his wife Maureen, and their three boys have all been great contributors to our program. Mike has helped our football program achieve some great success, both on and off the field. He is a very good man, who represented our program with knowledge, respect and integrity. His leadership was invaluable to our program and helped reinforce the strength of the St. Edith CYO program among our peers.  He put in many hours over the years, and we can never fully thank him, but I hope all of you will join me in thanking Mike and his family for their efforts, energy and leadership.

As some of you also realize, our football coordinator, Doug Lippert is stepping back from the duties of helping administer the activities of the football program. Doug has done a great service for all of us. He put in many hours dealing with equipment, fields, referees, etc. Without Doug's efforts, our games don't happen. I thank Doug for all that he has done, as well as a big thank you to his wife Mary. For his efforts took the support of his wife and their four children.  Fortunately we are blessed once more, for Michelle Skillman is going to step in as the new coordinator for our football program. However at this time, we will alter the duties of the role.  Michelle will be directly responsible for the varsity teams, but we will have other coordinators for the JV teams and Freshmen teams, both of whom will coordinate their efforts under Michelle's guidance. In this way, we believe we can lessen the workload and make the activity more manageable.  We are seeking people to fill the two other coordinator roles, and I would encourage you to contact Michelle if you are willing to serve our CYO community with the dawn of these changes.

With the beginning of this new chapter, Jeff Sugg will continue the great traditions that have been established within our program, but Jeff will also bring some changes, new plans that will further enhance the quality of our program. I encourage you to welcome Jeff in his new role, and lend your support to his efforts. You may not realize this, but Jeff's responsibility is more than just being the coach of our Varsity 1 team, he is the director of all of our football teams. He creates the "program" and pulls together the coaching staff. He is already seeking additional coaches, and if you are interested, please contact Jeff, or myself via email. Football is a great sport, but it does require the consistent efforts of many dedicated people to exist successfully.

You may be thinking about your ability to be involved, and you probably doubt that you can afford to sacrifice the time. But the fact of the matter is that all of us live with conflicting demands upon our time. Jeff for example is the president of a bank, Mike Gatt is a doctor, two pretty demanding jobs, but they made the time. So you CAN make the choice to willingly give of yourself, to be intimately involved in the activities of your children. For the success and enjoyment of your child's experience is dependent upon your involvement and contribution of your energy to the program.

Please volunteer yourself. Take on responsibility for the sake of your child, and for the benefit of all the children. Trust me, I am in my 15th year at St. Edith School/CYO, and now my youngest is finishing his 8th grade year. I can't believe how fast the years have flown by, but I know that my children and I will always keep in common the bond of our mutual involvement with CYO. As you become more involved, you too will realize the value of your "sacrifice".  Indeed, you no longer view it as a sacrifice, but rather it becomes an honor, a very worthwhile use of your minutes in life.

SO even though your efforts may occur off the field (or maybe on the field), you need to know, that either way they are critical to the success of St. Edith football.

Thank you for being a part of the St. Edith CYO family.

Sincerely,
Steve Cooper
Athletic Director

St. Edith Basketball Sign up

It is that time of year for basketball sign up. CYO Basketball is without question a very competitive form of basketball that is wrapped within the CYO environment.  This week is our initial turn in date. On Thursday and Friday, forms can be turned in at the CYO Football trailer. On Friday, we will also collect forms at the St. Edith gym.  Soccer players can turn in forms after a practice on Thursday or Friday to John Micallef.   Forms are available on the web site.

Basketball will begin in the first week of November. Schedules for teams will be determined in the next week.
