St. Augustine Saints: Welcome
|
|
|
Welcome to the home of the St. Augustine Saints Summer Collegiate baseball team. We are proud members of the Great South Baseball League, the former Georgia Collegiate League. The Saints return for their second season with student athletes representing Junior Colleges and four year Colleges/Universities. Local area schools include Jacksonville University, Flagler College, Thomas University, University of North Florida, St. Johns River Community College, Santa Fe Community College, Seminole Community College, Florida State University, Valdosta State University, and Brewton Parker College.
The Great South League morphed from the Georgia Collegiate League. The Georgia Collegiate League was formed in the fall of 2005 by the state-wide Georgia Dugout Club, an organization which promotes high school and college baseball within the State of Georgia. Recognizing the demand to play high-quality wood-bat summer baseball in the South led to the formation of the league and its inaugural 2006 season. The GSL has expanded for the 2009 summer season.

July 11, 2009 Macon, Georgia
In game 1, the Saints came out flat after a week of rainouts and managed one hit in a non-conference double header. Not withstanding the Saints struggle with the offense, it was discovred the baseballs put into play were non-regulation baseballs which were slightly larger than collegiate baseballs and had a soft loose feel to them. Kris Castellanos picked up the loss for the Saints as the Saints come up short 4-0.
In game 2, after Coach Strecker questioned the baseballs at the plate conference, the umpires agreed the baseballs provided by Macon were not regulation and the Saints provided baseballs for game 2. The Saints put a better attack together with the bats as they took game two, 3-2 to raise their record to 13-9. Shane McIntyre picked up the win for the Saints going four innings with Ty Smith coming in to throw two shutout innings and Josh Murray picked up a save coming in to close the seventh.

McIntyre (RHP) finished the summer with a 1.56 ERA in 18 quality innings with 15 K's and 7 walks.

In relief, the Saints were led by Adam Jaudon (Flagler College), J.W. Deighton (Flagler College), Kris Linster (UNF), Andrew Dismukes (Flagler College), and Mike Gottlieb (UNF).
