Finally, a Win Over the Dawgs 5-3...

Brian leads off second after 2RBI hit...

On a warm Sunday afternoon at Bucks Mill, the Stampede returned to the winners circle downing the New Jersey Madd Dawgs, 5-3. It was a closely fought contest from beginning to end. The Colts Neck battery proved to be more productive than usual, outhitting the Dawgs 7-3 and the defense was solid, committing only one error. It was fun to watch a game with no opposition big inning that required the team to struggle to overcome. However, this team has proven that they can bounce back from adverse situations.
Innings 1 & 2: Patrick struggled in the first inning, allowing 2 runs to be posted by the visiting Dawgs, before striking out their final hitter. The top of the Stampede order whimpered through their half of the inning, failing to move the ball out of the infield. Brian took over in the second inning and sent the opponent batting order down quickly on two infield flys and a strikeout. Paul led off the Colts Neck second with a single but was nailed on a double play ground ball to first. After two innings were complete, the score saw the Madd Dawgs leading, 2-0.
Innings 3 & 4: Brian continued his prowess on the mound into the third inning, preventing all visiting batters from reaching first base. As the Colts came to bat in the 3rd, Greg shot out of the gates with a single and made his way to second on an error by the third baseman. A.J. followed with a single and Matt G. grounded to the pitcher, but aggressive base-running by Greg, allowed him to score from third. The next batter, Brian, stepped into the box and nailed a low liner into right center that brought Evan and A.J. around to score, giving the home team their first lead at 3-2. Marco became the pitcher of record in the fourth, becoming the Stampedes third pitcher of the day. The first batter successfully garnered first base off an infield error and would later score to tie the game at 3. Marco struck out two of the next three batters. The fourth inning came to a close without injury by the Stampede lumber handlers, with the score knotted at 3.
Innings 5 & 6: Marco struck out the first two batters in the fifth before hitting a control bump that put two hitters on with walks. A single by the next hitter loaded the bases, but Marco calmly went back to work, striking out the next batter to snuff out any dawgy hopes. Big John took center stage and promptly laced a long double as the first hitter in the bottom of the fifth. Paul pushed him home with a single, giving the saddle boys the lead once again. Greg would notch his second single of the day that would result in Paul scoring a Stampede fifth run before the inning ended. Dylan stepped atop the hill in the sixth and struggled a bit with control, but successfully maneuvered his way through the inning, keeping the ball in the infield and striking out the last batter. The Colts Neck battery dropped in order in the bottom of the sixth, but sported a two run lead as they headed into the final frame.
7th Inning & Game Summary: Jimmy was beckoned as the team closer in the seventh and performed mightily. The first dawg batter popped out to Patrick at short, while the second batter grounded to second. With fire in his eyes, Jimmy bore down on the final Madd Dawg batter and sent him packing, breezing a fast ball past his belt buckle while he flailed helplessly. The win this day went to the Stampede and it felt good. The team had been playing close of late, but seemed to be unable to close the deal. It is fun to play basically errorless baseball and equally fun to outhit our opponent. Coach Grzelak's hitting instruction is finally bearing fruit... GO STAMPEDE!

Heartbreak Loss to Wall, 13-12...

Things don't always go our way...

Although the outcome of this game was not the one the team wanted, there were a lot of positives that came out of the contest. The team hammered out 14 hits, which is something we have always needed to be competitive. We only had 3 errors, which was not too bad, since one could attributed to the sunlight and another was due to an overextended stretch at first. I believe this team is going to be okay and we now know that we can compete very favorably in this league. Look for us to be a force in the second half of the spring season, especially with the pitching stable this team has. Also, it was very gratifying to see the team work their way back twice and if not for a mistimed steal, the Stampede might have pulled this one out.
Innings 1 & 2: The game began in the right direction as the first two Wall batters flied out to the infield. But then 4 hits and 2 walks later, the visiting Wall squad had racked up a 4-0 lead. A long fly ball to John in right field would finally end the Wall assault. On offense, the first two Stampede batters went down quickly, before John launched a solid single to left center. He would later score off a Matt J. single to narrow the gap to 4-1. Brian hit the hill in the second and pitched very well, shutting the visitors down in order. Evan, Matt G. and Brian all singled in the bottom of the second which was enough to bring AJ around to score. With two innings wrapped up, the Stampede trailed 4-2.
Innings 3 & 4: Again in the third, the Wall hitters made little noise, registering only a lone single. The Stampede appeared to settle into the bottom of the inning on a mission. First, Ryan reached base on an error, stole second, and then was driven home off a big John double past the center fielder. Paul walked and Matt reached on an error before AJ drove both home with another single. By the time the dust had settled, the Stampede had dashed into the lead, sporting a 6-4 advantage. Unfortunately, the fourth inning would prove to be very pivotal. Patrick struggled throughout on the hill. Three hits, three walks, and two errors later, saw the Stampede fade into the distance, giving Wall back a commanding margin of 12-6. The Stampede offense was no where to be found in the bottom of the fourth, as the stunned batsmen succumbed quietly.
Innings 5 & 6: Stll jubilant, Wall went easily in the fifth off a strong performance by Dylan. Paul led off the bottom of the frame with a single, Matt J. and Greg walked, while Evan and AJ singles cranked out three more Stampede scores. The team was valiantly fighting back. Wall would add a thirteenth run in the sixth. The Stampede was not done however as they continued the offensive onslaught in their half of the inning. Brian and Dylan got things rolling with singles. Ryan and Patrick would also work their way onto the basepaths. Three of the four would eventually find their way across home plate to bring the Stampede back to within one at 13-12.
7th Inning and Game Summary: Greg pitched the seventh inning and sent the Wall squad packing. If somehow the Colts could just muster one more run, maybe there was hope. Jimmy led off with a single. On the second pitch, an attempted steal resulted in disaster. Jimmy got a great jump, but a diving catch by the pitcher off a low line drive by Evan allowed Wall to double up the hapless horsemen. A final pop out to third base would end the Stampede quest for victory, dropping the slugfest, 13-12.

It was a great and gratifying effort by the team. It would have been easy to give up in the face of the early disaster, but the boys showed tremendous heart. They all know now that we really have a pretty good team and we can be a contender in the league. We have a lot of pitching and a lot of potential bats. The USABL has not heard the last of the Colts Neck Stampede.... GO STAMPEDE!

Gloomy Day Leads to Gloomier Loss...

Sadly, everything got all turned around in the 7th...

As the Stampede version of the Titanic sailed into the 7th inning on Sunday sporting a 9-1 comfortable margin, a cold drizzle steadily falling, little did anyone realize that mammoth icebergs were looming dead ahead. Eight walks later, the winning run coming home on a head doink, and the Stampede lay lifeless at the bottom of the North Atlantic off the coast of Pt. Pleasant. Weathering 10 walks in the first 6 innings, the Stampede somehow escaped major injury. It was one of those days where it did not matter who took the mound in the 7th, they were not going to catch a break. You won’t find many teams that can claim victory while walking 18 batters and the Stampede were not the exception, losing 10-9...
Innings 1 & 2: The horsemen got off to a sluggish start in the first, reaching base only on a second base error. Off two walks and a double, Pt. Pleasant jumped into the early lead at 1-0. Patrick struck out the final batter with two aboard to escape further insult. The Stampede snoozed again in the second, bringing only three batters to the plate. Patrick added two more walks in the bottom of the second, but did strike out everyone else to remain unscored upon in the inning. After two innings, Pt. Pleasant led 1-0...Walk Count=4
Innings 3 & 4: The Stampede began to show a little life in the third, when AJ and Matt G. walked and Chris loaded the bases reaching on an error. Unfortunately, they would become stranded as the inning came to a close. Marco took over pitching duty in the bottom of the third, struggled a bit, but the defense played well behind him to get through the inning. Off two singles in the top of the fourth by Patrick and Paul, four horsey runners crossed home plate to give the visitors the lead at 4-1. Marco and the defense again handled field duty well in the bottom of the inning, shutting down the Panthers without incident. With the game now past the midway point, Colts Neck held onto a 4-1 margin...Walk Count=2
Innings 5 & 6: Ryan and Chris singled in the fifth, pushing four more Colt runners into greener pastures, giving the Stampede a commanding 8-1 lead. It surely appeared that the Colts Neck horsemen would cruise on home to victory, but one must remember to keep proper orientation with the cart. Marco sailed through the bottom of the fifth unscathed. Paul added a score in the top of the sixth as the boys in orange continued their run for the roses, never looking back—oops! In the bottom of the sixth, Jimmy strolled to the mound and shut down the Point ratherly easily on two strikeouts. So, after 6 innings had been archived, it appeared that this game would be firmly tucked into the Stampede’s back pocket...Walk Count=2
Inning 7 and Game Summary: The visiting Colts did little in the 7th as they were rustled back into the barn easily. Under a steady rain, Jimmy headed back to the mound to complete the days task. Somewhere along the way, the orange pitching staff or the man in blue behind the plate, forgot what a strike looked like, because there were few in the inning. Only one strike comes immediately to memory and that strike became a grand slam that tied the game. This followed a wagon train of walks that would total 8 before the game ended. Although there was no comedy in the way this game concluded, in retrospect, one funny moment did occur in the final stages. Paul had told the coaches several times that if we needed him on the mound, that he would gladly volunteer and he felt he could get the ball over the plate. With the game tied and the bases loaded, the coaching staff decided to take up Paul on his proposition. He warmed up and declared himself ready. Unfortunately, his first pitch made a bee-line straight for a Pt. Pleasant helmet, as if drawn by a powerful magnetic force, dinking the final batter directly on the noggin to drive in the winning run. I guess it was an appropriate conclusion to a gut-wrenching day on the diamond...Walk Count=8; Doinks=1

We were not juggernauts at the plate, but we did only strike out 5 times and only once looking. All was not doom and gloom as there were several highlights coming from the Stampede stable. Ryan played super behind the plate, possibly his best effort in two years. He kept runners close all day and displayed great energy. Marco was solid on the mound as a middle reliever. Matt G. garnered three walks for a perfect day at the plate. Jimmy made a great catch in right, perfect throw to second, to double up the runner. It was a shame that it ended this way. Hopefully, this will not happen again this season. Time to move on......GO STAMPEDE!

Opening Day Mustang Victory....

Victorious 2004 Stampede...

The boys of summer opened their season in grand fashion on Sunday, downing their archrival neighbors, the Marlboro Mustangs, 3-2. Weighing in with only 4 strikeouts on the day, the team clearly stepped up to the plate with hitting the ball in their game plan. The team practiced only twice before opening day and there were many question marks that were still to be answered, but the pitching was an area that was a pleasant surprise. Jimmy, Dylan, and Patrick scattered five hits around the park that gave the boys in orange just enough room to pull off the victory. The defense also handled themselves well, with only two miscues on the day. Things are looking up for the Stampede with this great opening day triumph.
Innings 1 & 2: Jimmy sat the opposition down in order in the first with some soft dribblers around the infield on only 12 pitches. The Stampede, while being aggressive with the bat and driving some solid line drive fouls, also succumbed in order through the bottom of the inning. Marlboro cranked out two lead-off singles in the second and loaded the bases on a walk, before Jimmy closed the door with two consecutive strike-outs and a meek grounder back to the pitcher for the easy throw to first for out number three. In the lower half of the inning, Matt J. reached first on a defensive error and then scurried to second on an overthrow. With two out A.J. singled and stole second. Evan hit a sharp grounder to short that resulted in an error, allowing both Matt J. and A.J. to score. After two, the Stampede were in the lead, 2-0.
Innings 3 & 4: Once again in the third, the defense held solidly, sending the visitors back into the field quickly. Chris led off the third frame drawing a walk and Dylan followed up with another, putting runners on first and third, but that was as close as the home team would come to scoring in the inning. Dylan took over pitching duties in the fourth and was greeted with two quick runs off two errors and a walk. John closed the door before more damage could be caused, slickly picking up a hard grounder and making the perfect throw to first for the final out. John crushed a double to left-center to start things rolling in the bottom of the fourth and Matt J. brought him home with a sharp single up the middle to put the horsemen back into the lead. After 4, the score was now 3-2, Colts Neck.
Innings 5 & 6: Marlboro again threatened in the fifth off two singles, but Matt J. handled a hot ground ball near second with one away, tagging the runner and firing to first for the double play off a fine scoop by Paul, ending the Mustang threat. Jimmy led off the bottom of the fifth with his second single of the day, but the team could not muster enough offense to bring him around to score. Good pitching and strong defense, sent the Marlboro crew packing quickly in the sixth. Dylan again kept the ball in play, allowing the highly paid defense to earn their paychecks. The home team rattled Marlboro’s cage in the bottom of the sixth, but again could not muster a run. With only 3 outs remaining for a victory, the Stampede held onto a 3-2 advantage.
7th and Game Summary: Patrick took on the role of closer in the seventh and immediately walked his first batter. The batter then advanced to second on a passed ball, but the next batter grounded to first for the first out. Patrick fanned the next batter to bring the home team to within one out of their goal. Patrick walked the next hitter and for some unexplained reason, the Marlboro runner on third decided to come running towards home. Ryan, alertly, ran back to home plate, ball snugly affixed to his mitt, and tagged the confused runner to end the game, giving the Stampede their first taste of victory for 2004.

The game was a fast moving and well-played event, largely due to the solid pitching and great defense. The pitching staff threw 60 strikes and 59 balls on the day which was superb. Dylan was the control leader, with 24 strikes against only 13 balls. This team shows a lot of promise and hopefully they will continue to show good progress as the season goes on. Congratulations on a great win... GO STAMPEDE!

Journick Blasts Colts To Victory, 2-1

The joy of hitting a home run...

Just when it appeared that the Stampede would once again go feebly into the night with the offense barely noticable, a couple of timely hits turned the tide for the Colts quickly. The defense was outstanding and the pitching was keeping the team in the game. The offense was nowhere to be found for most of the contest, while Spotswood was cranking out 6 hits. It was gratifying to finally pick up a closely played game as the team had dropped several over the season.
Innings 1 & 2: With the Colts sitting in the visiting dugout, they had first at-bats. Other than Patrick hitting himself in the leg, nothing much happened in the opening frame for Colts Neck. Spotswood picked up a double, but Paul shut down the other three batters easily. In the Stampede second, two more strikeouts and a soft popup to second quickly ended the visitors hopes. Spotswood added two more singles in the bottom of the inning, but once again the defense stood their ground, stranding the two baserunners and keeping the game scoreless through two.
Innings 3 & 4: Two more strikeouts and a tepid grounder to second to start the third was not giving the Colts much hope as half of the offensive game was now history. On a walk and a single to right field, Spotswood finally got on the board in the inning. With the way that the Stampede was attacking in the box, it appeared that this might be enough to snatch the victory. Colts Neck did not answer the call in the fourth with two more dinky popups and a strikeout in the fourth. Spotswood was able to load the bases in the fourth, but a ground ball to A.J. at second ended the inning with the Colts unscathed. After four innings, the Colts trailed 1-0.
Innings 5 & 6: Ryan stepped into the box in the fifth with the fans beginning talk of what they were going to do when they get home. Suddenly Ryan launched a promising double to left-center. This was exciting in that the Colts had one of their fastest runners in scoring position with no outs and one of the teams best RBI hitters coming to the plate. Matt J. stepped to the plate and fouled off the first pitch. On the third pitch, Matt understood what it meant when a ball meets the bat on the sweet spot with his body in perfect alignment. Matt crushed the ball deep toward center field and with his mother forming a conga line in the stands, the ball sailed well over the fence and pushed Colts Neck into the lead, 2-1. Oh, the sweet taste of success. Hoping that this moment would inspire the team, the next three batters could not get the ball out of the infield, but at least made contact. A.J. strode to the mound in the fifth as the team closer and sent Spotswood packing without incident. Nothing for Colts Neck in the sixth as the game came down to the final three outs with A.J. posing as Mariano Rivera. A.J. sent the lead off batter to first on four straight balls. Just to keep it interesting, the next batter singled. The next batter hit a sharp grounder to Greg at third and Greg smartly stayed with the ball for the force out. A towering pop fly back to A.J. registered out number 2. With two out, the next batter crushed a line drive toward right field. With Matt G. driving hard toward the ball, he made a spectacular diving catch that gave the victory to the Colts and a little hope for the future. The Stampede had brought home a victory, topping Spotswood in the second round of the Hazlet tournament, 2-1.
Game Summary: The team was making great plays on defense, but as everyone knows, to win, the offense has to do something to give the team a chance. We didn't do much, but fortunately it was enough to win. There was some great defensive moments on the day, with Patrick covering a lot of ground at short, Greg showing good poise at third, Matt G. closing down a late Spotswood rally, and numerous other game-saving plays. Timing was everything on offense, with Ryan coming up with the solid double just at the right moment and Matt bringing them both home. A great victory for the Colts Neck!!! GO STAMPEDE!

Quest for Williamsport Ends In Marlboro...

The players are announced for their final game...

The Colts Neck boys journey west ended in Marlboro on Thursday dropping another tough contest, this time to Eatontown, 13-1. For the second game in a row, the prospects looked promising as the game progressed through the first couple of innings, before the boys began to unravel. The mental errors were the toughest to handle as players forgot defensive assignments often and batters were seen to take numerous called third strikes. Regardless, the Little League event is one that you pass through only once and we were fortunate enough to get that experience.
Innings 1 & 2: Greg started as pitcher for the Colts in the first and promptly forced the first batter to pop up to Tony at third. The next hitter launched a triple and would eventually score off two base hits. The second out came when Chris B. made a nice shallow left field catch in full stride. Matt G. opened for Colts Neck with a single to left off a changeup and Greg scorched a double to bring Matt home to score. Matt J. and Paul then walked but were left homeless when the inning ended. Two errors in the second allowed another Eatontown run to light up the scoreboard. Matt G. collected his second single in the second inning, but a ground ball back to the pitcher left him out to dry. After two innings, Colts Neck trailed 2-1.
Innings 3 & 4: Despite a great double play in the third, Eatontown still managed to add to their ascending score. Tony picked a ground ball at third, looked the runner back and fired to Paul at first for the out. Paul then fired home for the runner from third and Matt J. made the tag for out number 2. Greg struck out the final batter. Matt J., Paul, and Aaren were all K-birds in the third with two caught looking on a called third strike. Once again in the fourth, an error allowed a run to score with two outs, putting Eatontown at four. Only Chris B. made noise in the fourth for the Colt squad, picking up a base hit on good hustle to first base. With four innings in the books, Colts Neck was still riding the caboose at 4-1.
Innings 5 & 6: The wheels really began to come off in the fifth, once again with two outs in the books, two errors allowed 3 runs to make the circuit in Eatontowns favor. Matt J. singled in the bottom of the fifth, but two more strike-outs left little room for gaining on the opponent. With the score now 7-1, the floodgates eased open for Eatontown in the top of the sixth. Eatontown would go on to score 6 in the frame and snatch away the last breath of hope that Colts Neck could muster. Chris D. was able to pick up a base-on-balls in the sixth, but the rest of the battery failed to step up and meet the challenge. Colts Neck's final out came with ground ball back to the pitcher to eliminate the Colts from contention in pool play.
Game Summary: Though the outcome was not the one we wanted, the game still proved to be valuable experience for the team. All these tournaments are measuring devices so that we can gauge our progress against other towns and have some fun along the way. We still have much to improve on and we have some boys whose futures look promising. We just have to become smarter, more aggressive, and much more focused. Thanks to Chris B., Andrew, and Brian for their contributions in the tournament and good luck during the rest of your summer USABL season. You boys were great. For the Stampede, we will now get ready for the Hazlet tournament that starts on July 12 and then on to Cooperstown the following week. We hope to practice three times next week, so make sure that you check this site on Sunday night and Monday for the schedule. Enjoy your July 4th!!! GO STAMPEDE!

Colts Muddle Through Middletown, Losing 5-0

The 2003 All-Stars are introduced to their fans...

It was another dark day in Dry Gulch, as the hapless horsemen offense nearly went hitless and the daffy defense was often in denial. There were some exceptional defensive efforts however with Chris D. nailing a runner at third and home and Andrew scooping up everything that came his way at second, despite the scorching speed with which they were delivered. Evan gave a very capable performance on the mound. But the teams presence in the batters box was woeful, especially considering the level of the opponent pitching. The Middletown outfield was playing very shallow in their belief that the Colts were merely shadow boxing with their bats, all of which in the end, proved accurate. In 9 innings, the Colt All-Stars have garnered only 1 hit and struck out 15 times. Middletown gave Colts Neck every opportunity to take this contest, but the boys from out west did not take advantage.
Innings 1 & 2: Evan started the game on a good note, outrunning a bobbled ball to secure his place on first base and Matt J., displaying a great eye, gathered in his first of three walks. Despite the shaky Middletown pitching, the remaining three Colts were caught napping on strikes and left their fellow teammates perched on the basepaths. Middletown tallied a run in their half of the inning on three hits. In the Colts second, three weak grounders to the pitcher were the best the team could offer, as the teams dugout rest was short-lived. Middletown was no luckier in their at-bat, succumbing to three consecutive fly-balls, but retained the second inning lead at 1-0.
Innings 3 & 4: As the Middletown outfield crept closer and closer to the infield, Colts Neck responded with only three weak ground balls for quick disposition. Middletown cranked out two big hits and another insurance run in the third to expand their lead to 2-0. Matt J. picked up his second base-on-balls in the fourth, but that was the end of the Colt threat for the inning. Middletown added yet another run in the bottom of the inning to extend their margin to three.
Innings 5 & 6: Middletown's right fielder picked off a Chris D. fly ball down the line to start the fifth and Chris B. displayed a sharp eye collecting a walk. Andrew hammered a hard ground ball up the middle but the Middletown center-fielder made a spectacular defensive play, cleanly fielding the ball and firing to second base ahead of Chris' slide, robbing Andrew of the base hit. Two more hits in the fifth propelled Middletown to a 5-0 lead. Colts Neck was now only 3 outs away from going hitless once again in two days. Only a great running effort by Greg on a ground ball ruined the day as he beat out the throw as he collected the lone Colt base hit in the game. Matt J. followed by getting doinked by the disappointed Middletown pitcher. With two runners on and one out, Colts Neck still held out hope. Two soft ground balls later and the game was over with Middletown sporting a 5-0 victory that effectively wiped out the Colts chance of advancing from the first round.
Game Summary: It was another tough day for the boys in green as the move on to face Eatontown in Marlboro on Thursday. Hopefully, the team can rebound for a moral victory in this final contest and show Monmouth County that Colts Neck can be a team that can be dangerous to deal with. Eatontown triumphed over Middletown in their first game, 5-3, so they are beatable if the Colts use an aggressive bat and make their defensive reads correctly. GO STAMPEDE!

Lincroft Dominates in L.L. Opener, 10-0

Coach, I'm having trouble seeing the ball. Any suggestions???

Reality check for the Colts as they took the field for the opening round of the Little League International Tournament at Lincroft on Monday. Lincroft displayed high velocity pitching and bone-crushing hitting to thoroughly dominate the contest. They seemingly hit every available hole on the field when hitting. The Colts Neck squad could not must much as they were struck out 11 times in 13 plate appearances, as they went hitless for the evening. Several bright spots were apparent for the Colts in the loss. Greg made a super throw from center to Chris D. at the plate to nail the Lincroft runner. Andrew made a nice diving catch of a pop fly at third. Chris D. picked off a couple of foul pop-ups and Marco threw very well on the hill. Now its on to Eatontown to play Middletown on Tuesday in the second round of pool play.
Innings 1 & 2: Only Matt was able to draw blood in the first off a two-out walk. All other Colts Neck batters were overcome by smoke. For Lincroft, the offensive game began with the first batter reaching first base on an error. Two singles and a home run later, Lincroft had not exactly made Paul's day aa they took the lead in the first, 4-0. Matt G. led off second with a ground ball to second that was cleanly fielded for the only action in the second inning. Seven Lincroft hits in the second nearly sealed the fate for Colts Neck as they hammered out 5 more scores to take a comfortable 9-0 lead heading into the third.
Innings 3 & 4: Three more strikeouts in the third for the boys in green was not making the Colts fandom hopeful. Marco took over the pitching duties in the third and cut down two Lincroft batters on strikes and popped out the third. In the fourth, the Colts Neck battery still had nothing to build on as they once again succumbed three times to the mighty K. Finally, in the Lincroft fourth, Lincroft added the run needed to end the game and send the Colts Neck squad home with their first loss of the tourney, 10-0.
Game Summary: It was a tough way to begin our hopes for Williamsport, but we are still not out of it. If we can manage a victory against Middletown on Tuesday, then we are right back in the hunt. The loss of 5 feet on the mound made the opposing pitcher appear like Randy Johnson and the Colt bats saw little contact. Hopefully we will fare better in round 2.GO STAMPEDE!

Season Finale-South Plainfield 11, Stampede 10...

As the game slips away...

The team offense in the last two games has made significant strides. The boys looked strong in the box and aggressive on the base paths. With South Plainfield giving up 8 walks, it appeared that the Colts would ring up their second victory in two games. However, todays Achilles heal turned out to be defense, as at least half of the South Plainfield run production came off errors. As the USABL season concludes, the team has hopes of better fortune in the upcoming Little League tournament.
Innings 1 & 2: Greg was first on the hill for the Stampede as the game began. The first batter grounded to Tony for the opening out. South Plainfield notched two runs on consecutive base hits before the inning ended. In the Stampede first, Ryan reached on a error and Evan backed him up with a base hit. Matt J. grounded to first that brought Ryan home to score and Paul singled in Evan. After 1, the score was knotted at 2. Greg struck out two in the second to send the Vipers packing. Aaren, Chris, and Marco broke out in the second with all three collecting base hits. Aaren and Chris would eventually score to give the Colts the 4-2 lead.
Innings 3 & 4: Matt G. was next on the mound and met with stiff Viper resistance. On two base hits, the South Plainfield squad rang up three more runs to take charge once again. Not to be outdone, Paul opened the third by smashing a triple. With the bases loaded and two outs, Marco strode to the box and promptly launched a base clearing double that sent the Stampede back into the lead at 7-5. Paul stepped to the mound in the fourth and once again the Vipers were in attack mode, tying up the contest at 7. In the bottom of the inning, the Stampede was finally held hitless and scoreless. After 4 innings, the score was again locked up with both teams sitting on 7 runs.
Innings 5 & 6: South Plainfield was still cranking in overdrive to begin the fifth and once again brought home three runners to score to take the lead, 10-7. Paul led off with a walk in the lower half of the inning. Greg and Matt G. loaded the bases with walks before Aaren and Chris singled home the trio to tie up the game again, this time at 10 apiece. Ryan came on as the Colts Neck closer in the sixth and off an error, South Plainfield was able to add another run to their bottom line. When it came time for the Colts to respond, the tank appeared empty as they could not manage another score, dropping an exciting contest at 11-10.
Game Summary: The Colt bats were hitting pretty well in the game and the eyes of the batters seemed sharp, collecting 8 walks. Even with 10 strikeouts, the team managed to register 10 runs. Now its back to the 60 foot fields as we enter the Little League tourney, followed by the Hazlet tourney. Little League is pool play and the team is guaranteed 3 games with the first and second place teams in the pool moving closer to Williamsport. Good Luck Colts Neck… GO STAMPEDE!

We have a winner!! Top the Wall Cyclones, 6-5

Coolest job on the field...

One hurdle jumped(1st victory) and hopefully more victories to follow. The team seemed stymied by the oppressive heat, but Wall fared no better. With both teams hitting sporadically, the game came down to who would be more aggressive and the Stampede prevailed. This was probably the teams best baserunning effort of the season as they time and time again, got into the opposing pitchers head, forcing him to throw erratically. When Wall got lazy, the Stampede was off and running.
Innings 1 & 2: Patrick shut down the Cyclones in the first inning, striking out two and gobbling up a ground ball for the third. On offense, Patrick, Ryan, and Matt J. lead off with walks. By innings end, all three had traversed home plate to put the home team on top, 3-0. Patrick's controlled began to wander in the second inning with Wall pushing across two runs of their own. Marco and Tony both hit grounders but were unable to reach first. Chris walked and worked his way to third with Brian at the plate. With a substantial lead at third, the Wall pitcher became flustered and threw a curve ball wide that the catcher had trouble handling. The miscue allowed Chris to score to give the Colts the 4-2 lead.
Innings 3 & 4: Marco hit the hill in the third and was greeted by a long double to open the inning. Aaren hit the cut-off(Patrick) and Patrick threw a perfect strike to third to nail the runner for the first out. Marco settled in and worked two ground balls to Matt on second for outs 2 and 3. Ryan and Matt J. opened the bottom of the third by getting on base and stole their way to second and third. Paul placed a perfect single to right field that scored Ryan and on a passed ball Matt also made his way home. A couple of big hits in the top of the fourth allowed Wall to get back into contention, adding 3 runs to the scorebook. With the score now favoring the home team at 6-5, the Colts came to bat. Both Matt G. and Aaren smacked singles through the infield. They were ultimately left stranded when the inning came to a close.
Innings 5 & 6: Brian was next in line for pitching duty and he kept Wall off-balance throughout the inning. No runs advanced in the inning. Patrick and Ryan notched singles to open the fifth. Patrick was caught stealing third off a perfect throw from the center-fielder. The inning subsided with a grounder from Matt J. to the Wall shortstop. Brian stoically squared off against the first hitter and promptly got down in the count at 3-1, but fought back and struck the batter out. When the next batter walked, stole second and on an attempt to steal third, was barbecued by a perfect throw from Ryan behind the plate. The final out came on a ground ball to second to give the Stampede a sweet victory, winning 6-5.
Game Summary: The orange boys wanted the game more than Wall and especially the fine base-running was the difference. The pitching was great, but a few balls again got by our outfielders. The infield was sharp, but the hitting was a little lethargic-hopefully because it was so hot. Hopefully, we can notch our next victory on Saturday against South Plainfield. Good Job Team... Horsemen Toppled by Monmouth Yankees, 12-3...

The Babe lives after Brian crushes home run to straightaway center...

With the opening round of the Cheesequake tournament coming two days late due to the rain, it appeared that this tourney had become Cheesequack. On a cold, soggy, and foggy morning, the Stampede hit the field to play the Monmouth Yankees. The boys were playing fairly well through four, but seemed timid on defense and punchless on offense. In the final two innings, Monmouth added 10 runs to their total and pretty stopped the music for the boys in orange. With only 1 hit for the team going into the sixth and down 12-0, it seemed that the hitting drought would continue. Fortunately, the 6th brought a little sunshine to the struggling Colts, when Brian, with Chris on board, launched a rainmaker to the swamp in deep center field that would finally give the team something to cheer about...
Innings 1 & 2: The Monmouth leadoff hitter began the day with a single and the second batter was thrown out on a heads-up coverage play by Matt J. at first. Monmouth would go on to add a run in the inning. Matt J. stroked a line drive base-hit in the bottom of the first to right, but was left stranded when the inning closed on a strikeout. The Yankees notched another run in the second, but Paul was pitching well, keeping the blue marauders close. Again, in the lower half of the inning, Colts Neck put two runners aboard off walks to Tony and A.J., but three more strikeouts left them anguished, perched on the basepaths. After two innings, Colts Neck trailed, 2-0.
Innings 3 & 4: Paul kept the Yankees off base and the Colts out of trouble in the middle innings, giving up nothing but infield garbage for the defense to collect. The Yankee pitching staff was equally stingy with the Colts, sending them packing with nary a base-runner for the two frames. With four in the books, Colts Neck was still pulling the caboose at 2-0.
Innings 5 & 6: As the game wound down, Paul began to struggle in the fifth. Four walks and 6 runs ensued before the door could be shut on the Yanks. A shocking inning for the orangemen as the mountain just got bigger. K-K-K was the Colt answer in the bottom of the fifth. Brian took over pitching duties in the sixth as the Yankees came alive once again for four. Tony flew out to center to open the final inning and A.J. collected a walk. Chris dropped a single into left and Marco hit a sharp ground ball to second that brought A.J. across home plate for the Stampedes first score of the day. With two outs, Brian stepped to the plate and politely smacked a base-clearing home-run to center that gave the Colts 2 more face-saving runs. The game ended with some smiles, despite the loss.
Game Summary: Paul was the biggest thing to report in the first 4 innings, holding down the Yankees rather easily, with Matt J. covering first a couple of times from second base that made the coaches proud of his effort. The boys lack aggression at some key positions that will have to be adjusted to compete. Eleven strikeouts are too many for the team to absorb when stacked on top of the 5 errors with only three hits on the positive side. Our pitchers are letting the opposing baserunners run at will, but they will get better with experience. We will perform better as the season goes along... GO STAMPEDE!

Stampede Nosed Out By Wall, 4-3

Patrick bringing the heat!

On a blustery, cold afternoon at the Wall High School, the Stampede took the field hoping to capture their first victory of the year. The game looked great early on, as the horseys crossed home plate three times in the first two innings. Unfortunately, Wall crossed it four times. The boys battled well and except for a couple mental mistakes, the team could have walked away with the victory. They held wall scoreless after the second inning and equaled Wall's hit count. The team is one hit, one error, or one mental mistake away from the victory circle and we hope to make a trip there before the Belmont...
Innings 1 & 2: Patrick, Ryan, and Greg began the game with base-on-balls hat trick to load the bases. Paul hit a sharp ground ball to second that brought Patrick home for the opening score and Matt G. hit a grounder to short that sent Ryan scurrying across home plate for score number 2. Off a lone double in the bottom of the inning, Wall notched up to runs of their own to tie the game at 2. A.J. led off the second with a walk before Marco singled him in for the go-ahead score. Wall added two more in the bottom of the second to squeak ahead of the Stampede at 4-3.
Innings 3 & 4: Paul cracked a single to open the third, but was left standing on second with the final out. Patrick cleanly fielded two infield ground balls for the first two outs in the bottom of the frame and A.J. picked up the force at second for the third. There was little noise for the Colt battery in the fourth as they were silenced quickly. Patrick handled the first two batters easily in the Wall half of the fourth, with Paul gathering in the unassisted third out at first base. After four complete, Wall still led, 4-3.
Innings 5 & 6: With one out in the top of the fifth, Paul laced a long double to right center that put hope back into the Stampede squad, while Aaren drew a walk. Unfortuately, as Paul attempted the steal of third, the ball reached the third basemen first. Patrick silenced the Wall bats again in the bottom of the inning, as the Colts Neck crew were down to their last three outs. The first two batters succumbed to strike-outs, before Marco launched a single to left center off a Wall knuckleball and moved to second on an error on the left-fielder. He remained there as the game came to a close. Colts Neck fell once again with the score, 4-3 Wall....
Game Summary: We played good baseball but are still not running the bases well as a team. A couple more balls should have probably been fielded and we must begin to get more hits. The Wall baserunners moved around the basepaths easily, even with their slowest runners. We have to stop that from happening. With all these mistakes, we still almost came out the winner. Now on to Cheesequake and maybe some victories... GO STAMPEDE!

Stampede Drops Mother's Day Contest, 3-0

Surrounded in enemy territory...

The team appeared to have left their lumber back in Colts Neck as they visited South Plainfield on Sunday. The mighty Colts managed only two hits on the day while striking out 10 times. Only Paul and Evan managed base hits on the day. The pitching and the defense performed well however. In the end South Plainfield would persevere, dropping the Colts for the third time this season, 3-0.
Innings 1 & 2: The game began with an apparent miscall when Patrick appeared to have easily beaten the throw on a hard grounder to third, but the resident umpire disagreed. Ryan racked up a walk, with Greg and Evan flying out to end the inning. Paul mowed down the home team easily in the first, sending them packing in order. In the second, Paul led off with a base hit, while Matt reached on an error. With two aboard and no outs, things were looking favorable for the orange Stampede. Unfortunately, the Vipers dispatched the next three batters without incident. The lead-off S. Plainfield batter opened the second with a long double. Remaining composed, Paul comfortably disposed the next three hitters. After two innings, the game stood scoreless.
Innings 3 & 4: AJ was first up in the third and drew a walk for his efforts. He was able to advance himself to third, but was unable to score when the Stampede battery left him stranded. Patrick took the mound in the third and had trouble acclimating from the outset. Off a hit batter, a single, and a double, Plainfield was finally able to tally the first run of the day. In the top of the fourth, the Stampede made little noise as succumbed in order. Not happy with hitting only one batter, Patrick proceeded to plunk the leadoff hitter for the Vipers. He seemingly had the runner picked off at third base, but the subsequent rundown ended with the runner safely diving back into third. He later scored. With four gone, the score now stood 2-0, Plainfield.
Innings 5 & 6: As the game neared its conclusion, Evan crushed a lead-off double, however he was thrown out at third when the second baseman missed the throw from the catcher trying to secure the out. Paul and Matt J. added walks, but again the Colt runners were left stranded. Evan became the pitcher to start the fifth and allowed only a lone single. This hitter scored ahead of a terrific throw from Patrick in shallow center to AJ at third to catch the Plainfield runner at third for the final out. The Stampede had only three outs remaining to redeem the day. Things looked up momentarily when Marco lined what appeared to be a base hit to right field. As Marco left the box however, he slipped on home plate and the throw from right to first beat him by a step. The final two Colt batters struck out, ending hopes for a Mothers Day miracle. Final score, Plainfield 3, Colts Neck 0…
Game Summary: The hits just did not come today. The boys were swinging, but the contact was not very solid. Paul looked sharp on the mound and the defense made several spectacular plays in the field. In the final analysis though, the lack of offense summed up the game. Rarely do teams win when the hits are not in attendance. We'll work hard and there will be improvement in our next outing.GO STAMPEDE!

Edison Overpowers Colts, 13-4...

Matt heads back on the field after a crushing 2 run double...

With mental mistakes still taking center stage, the mighty horseys stalled once again. They did contend until the 5th, when defensive aggression seemed to take a back seat and 3 errors opened the door for an 8-run Edison onslaught. The team compiled 5 errors for the day and added 1 to their total hit category, racking up 5, but the boys are still a bit timid in the box. We did run the bases better and the pitchers pitched well and held runners mostly in check.
Innings 1 & 2: The game began rather well, when Greg pounded a single to left, but as Ryan's legs did to him in the last game, Greg's also led him astray today. As they pushed on toward second, the brainy-side of Greg realized that a serious mistake had been encountered and he was thrown out heading back into first. OUCH! Evan pitched masterfully, allowing two hits in his 2-inning outing with no runners traversing homeplate. After two innings, the score was tied at 0.
Innings 3 & 4: In the third, Chris became the second horsey hitter to hit paydirt, cracking a single up the middle. A.J. and Tony filled the bases on a walk and fielders choice, before Brian went down on strikes to end the inning. Paul took the hill in the third and the defense took the inning off. Paul pitched well, but 5 runs made they way home to give Edison the early lead. The Colts answered with three in the top of the fourth with Paul cracking a single and Matt G. powering a two-run double. Tony came out of the bullpen and shut down the Edison crew easily. After 4 innings, Edison was still on top, 5-3.
Innings 5 & 6: Colts Neck added another run in the fifth and Tony gained access to first base off a solid hit. Matt G. was next out of the pen and it appeared as if he were the only one who took the field. Edison moved around the bases at will, accumulating 8 runs off 4 hits, but only 3 were earned... Sad, sad defense! Colts, now down by 9, struggled in the final frame and very quietly added their second notation in the loss column, dropping the contest, 13-4...
Game Summary: Bad Mentality and lack of aggression were pretty much the theme of the day. Players several times gave up on easy pop fly balls, allowing runners to successfully reach their next base. We want players to be smart and lay it out for the team on every defensive opportunity. When we find those 9 guys, then we have found our starters and we will start cranking out the victories for all those folks back in horse country... GO STAMPEDE!

Colts Drop Opener to Wall, 3-1...

Evan rumbles to first Stampede score...

On a beautiful day for baseball, the 2003 version of the Colts Neck Stampede took to the field, somewhat under-practiced, for what was hoped would be a more competitive season in the USABL. On the mound the horsemen showed great promise holding Wall to only two hits. On defense, only two errors made their surly appearance. At the plate, too many players were too passive---taking pitch after pitch. To compete successfully, the team must always be in ATTACK mode. Running the base-paths was another weak point, as we did not force the Wall pitchers to throw to a base all day and we did not steal a base. All in all, a good opening day as team orange out-slugged Wall, 4-2 on three doubles.
Innings 1 & 2: Wall led off in the first banging out a single and a double. The Clippers went on to score one, before the stingy Colt defense gathered in two fly balls that ended the inning with only minor damage. The Stampede had a rough first with Ryan and Aaren going down on strikes and Evan grounding back to the pitcher. After one the score was 1-0, Wall. Wall added another run in the second, when the first batter walked and easily made his way to third on steals. Evan struck out the next hitter and Matt J. made a spirited flyball catch at deep second, but his throw could not beat the runner before he scampered across home-plate. Again, the inning ended with a Wall run coming home to score. In the bottom of the second, the Stampede went quietly with two K's and a mild popup to second base. With two now in the books, Colts Neck trailed, 2-0.
Innings 3 & 4: Greg took over the pitching duties in the third. The first two batters sent soaring fly balls to center with Ryan judging both perfectly, gathering them in for the first two outs. Marco fielded a ground ball at second to halt the Clipper advance with no runs scoring. Matt G. and Marco led off the bottom of the third, successfully securing walks. Matt was picked off second on a attempted steal as the Colts Neck battery once again went silent. With half the game now over, the Colts remained hitless and trailing, 2-0. The defense held tough in the fourth with Paul, Matt J., and Evan, fielding flawlessly and shutting down the opponent in order. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Brian registered the first hit of the season with a hammer-shot to right-center. Ryan became the second, when he nailed a double, also to right-center, but was caught at second when he couldn't stop his legs from heading for third. The Colts left Brian stranded at third as the inning stalled with the score remaining at 2-0.
Innings 5 & 6: Brian took the hill in the fifth and promptly struck out the lead-off hitter. The next batter walked and stole his way to third. He scurried home on a perfectly executed bunt, with Brian making a valiant fielding effort, but a second too late. The defense cleanly fielded the next two ground balls to halt any further damage. Evan cracked a lead-off double down the third base line to start the fifth and then successfully maneuvered his way to third on a wild pitch. He came home when the third baseman missed an errant throw from the catcher. With one out, Matt J. became yet another Colt hitter to drive a rocket into the outfield for a standup double. With two outs, Matt G. walked, before Marco went down on strikes. In the final frame, Paul sent the Clippers packing, dropping them in order, while letting the defense do the work. Likewise, Wall summarily sent the home team down quickly, with only Matt G. garnering a base-on-balls. The game ended with the final score Wall 3, Stampede 1.
Game Summary: Though the game did not end as well as we had hoped, the team did show a lot of positives in their debut. First off, the pitching showed real promise. With some work on holding runners, the team appears deep on the mound. The team showed sparks of power, with three doubles and a driving single. The defense looked good, committing only two errors, better than almost every game we played last year. We just need to work on being aggressive at the plate and becoming rabbit-like on the base paths. We have to make the opponent think that we are running on every pitch. Stay tuned, this team is going to be pretty good. GO STAMPEDE!

Stampede Rampages Through Little Silver, 8-0

The Stampede finally get their victory...

On one of those rare days that keep us coming back to the ballpark, the Stampede rode into Little Silver and restored some baseball law and order. The team did everything required and more to bring home the victory in the semi-final round of the league playoffs. Patrick pitched great(1-hitter), the fielders were solid, and the offense was on the attack. One can only imagine how our season would have gone if this kind of effort had been with us for the entire year. Nevertheless, the boys did what they had to do when it counted. The effort did not go unrecognized by the Little Silver coaching staff as they left the field, noting that Colts Neck really came to play today. Great job......
Innings 1 & 2: The Colts did not enjoy much offensive success in the first as the boys went down in order. Patrick also had a rocky start on the mound, walking the first two batters. The pony defense stepped up and closed the Thunder down without incident. The Stampede was thankful to be on the receiving end of four walks in the second and Greg popped a single that eventually allowed the horseys to register an early 2-0 lead. Patrick hit his stride in the second, striking out two and A.J. picking off the third. With 1/3 of the game behind us, the Stampede led, 2-0.
Innings 3 & 4: Once again in the third the Colts offense stalled even though the batters were aggressive. The Thunder led off the third with a left-center double that worried the Stampede faithful. With two more K's and a solid fielding job by A.J. and the Thunder rally was nipped in the bud. In the fourth, the Stampede was on the move once again. Matt J. opened with a double while Tony and Brian also added singles. Throw in a couple of walks and the Colts would traverse home plate four times in the inning. Tony locked down two outs at third in the bottom of the inner, one on a catch of a screaming line drive down the third base line to once more stop the Thunder cold. With four innings played, Colts Neck held a whopping lead of 6-0.
Innings 5 & 6: Patrick led off the fifth with a single which was followed by a Ryan single. Both players would later score as the wheels were coming off the Thunder pitching staff. Patrick could now see the potential victory and he cranked his pitching up a notch and struck out three. In the final inning, Brian led the way with a walk, but was forced out on a fielders choice. The inning ended on two more fielders choice plays. With only three outs standing in the Stampede path to victory, the team once more took the field. Brian made a great defensive play at first to nab the first out. A pop fly to A.J. at short would make it two. The final out came on a ground ball back to Patrick on the mound that sent the Thunder to the showers. A sweet Colts Neck victory for the deserving boys in orange, 8-0.
Game Summary: From top to bottom, the team was firing on all cylinders. Several times, potential cracks were quickly sealed by deft defense and heroic pitching. Player after player took their turn in the box and were rewarded handsomely. Not once in the entire game did the boys let up, never discounting Little Silver's talent to come back. Now it's on to the championship game on Sunday at Laird Road. Regardless of the outcome of Sunday's game, the Stampede made their coaches and fans very proud here today. Good luck tomorrow horseys!!! GO STAMPEDE!
