Stallions lose to Steelers in National Championship game

Another National Championship game has come and gone, and unfortunately the Stallions lost, again.  This time 65 - 6 in front of 4500 Steelers fans.  Right from the start the Steelers avoided the Stallions strength of Special teams and early turnovers cost the Stallions.  The Stallions only TD was scored on a 68 yard pass from Willie King to Rookie SB Ray Nattress.  Another touchdown, on a 38-yard reception by Orrin Bailey, was called back on an offside penalty.  Nattress was named offensive player of the game for the AFL champions. He finished with a game-high 116 receiving yards.   Defensively LB Yuri Wishloff led all Stallions with 7 tackles.

Up next for the Stallions will be the season wind up party.  Stay tuned to the website for details.

Stallions rock the Wolfpack, claim 2nd AFL title in 3 years

Sunday afternoon was a scortcher in Calgary with temperatures near 30C, but that didnt stop the Stallions from claiming back the AFL championship.  The Stallions took the lead early and never looked back all day.  Offensively led by WR Ryan Batcheor and SB Ray Natress, the Stallions cosistantly gained solid field position.  QB's Travis Tyler and Willie King rotated all game and allowed for various offensive looks.  The Stallions scored on 2 runs, set up by the passing game.  HB Manny Goedon scored on a 1 yard TD and FB Ridley Chen did the same.

Defensively the Stallions were unable to figure out QB Darryl Leason early, but by the 2nd quarter had all of there stars on the field.  LB Real Bouchard returned a Leason INT 55 yards for a TD, as did DB Rio Wells.  FS JR Larose was laying some serious Lumber all game when any Pack receiver caught a pass in the middle of the field.

Special teams were key today and return specialist Ray atress and Rio Wells all game gave teh Stallions Offene amazing field position.  K Brad Matheson kicked 3 FG's.

The final score was Stallions 39, Wolfpack 32.  The Stallions will now injoy a week off before preparing to battle the NFC champs, the Sault Ste Marie Steelers for the CMFL National Championship on Sept. 19th.

Stallions defeat Vandals in Semifinals.

3rd time was the charm for the 2009 Stallions as they travelled into Lloyd for the third time this season, and the AFL semi final.  The Stallions had lost there previous 2 games in Lloyd this season 14 - 0, and 39 - 24.  But this time the loser was finished and the Stallions had unfinished business.

The Vandals took a early lead on the Stallions 6 -0 on 2 FG's.  Then shortly afterwards scored a TD and made it 13 - 0, and still in the 1st quarter.  K Brad Matheson kicked 2 FG's to make the score 13 - 6 by half time.  The story of the Stallions in the first half was there inability to sustain drives.  QB Travis Tyler started the game, but was pulled at the start of the 2nd quarter for QB Willie King.  Willie also had a tough time moving the ball against the Vandals swarming defence in the 2nd quarter.

However in the 3rd quarter the Stallions were able to move the ball and scored 21 points.  Willie King threw for over 200 yards and 1 TD pass.  This was to SB Ray Natress.  RB Manny Gordon scampered in for a 10 yard TD run.  However the story was the Stallions Defence.  8 QB sacks and 2 INT's.  Sacks came from Wishloff (2), Oakley Siewert, Petit, Bouchard and Heathcote.  DB Rio Wells and oakley both had a INT.

The Stallions managed to control the ball and the clock in the 4th quarter and the final score was 27 - 23 Stallions.  Up next is the AFL Championship against the Calgary Wolfpack.  Gametime is Sunday Aug 30th at 3 pm!

Stallions defeat Panthers in 1/4, now a date with the Vandals

Saturday night the Stallions managed to muster up some players for there 1/4 game.  Back in action was FS JR Larose, CB Grant Shaw DB Jordan Heathcote.  Plus back from what appeared to be season ending was Willie King.  However with the Stars back the game didnt start how the Stallions had planned and before they knew it, it was 10 - 0 Panthers.

The Stallions Offense did start moving the ball, and managed to drive down field and set up K Brad Matheson for a FG, making it 10 - 3.  Matheson ended up going 3 / 4 on the night.

Parkland did manage another FG, but then the Stallions offence picked it up and scored on a run by RB Manny Gordon, and a  little later scored on a 85 yard pass from QB Travis Tyler to SB Ray Natress.  The D also got a safety.

Defensively DE Guillaume Petit got a sack and the Stallions secondary had 3 INT by CB Mike Oakley, FS JR Larose and CB Grant Shaw.

The Stallions will now travel to Lloydminister Saturday, AGAIN, to battle the Vandals in the AFL Semifinal match.  In the other AFL semifinal match the Wolfpack will travel to GP to play the Drillers on Sunday afternoon after defeating the Calgary Gators 19 - 3 last night.

Stallions unable to protect lead, finish season in fourth place.

Saturday afternoon the 5 - 2 Stallions travelled to Sunny Lloydminster to battle the 6 - 1 Vandals.  The Stallions were only able to muster up 25 players for the all important game and at half time held a 24 - 12 lead.  But unfortunately the card house collapsed and the Stallions found themselves victoms of the Vandals yet again, losing 39 - 24.

It wasnt all negative for the Stallions, as QB Travis Tyler threw for 2 TD's and managed to drive the ball down field.  One TD pass was to SB Morgan Lidka, and the other was to WR Orrin Bailey.  PR specialist Ray Natressed returned another punt for a TD, this one was over 80 yards.  K Brad Matheson was also 1 for 1 in the FG department.  But all the Stallions points came by halftime.

The 2nd half was a completely different game.  Fatigue was the reason, as Linemen were playing both ways as only 2 of the Stallions Olinemen managed to make the trip East.  DE Guillaume Petit had a solid game with 2 QB sacks.  DE Tim Siewert also had a sack.

The loss puts the Stallions in 4th place and gives us a home date this Saturday against the cross town rival Parkland Panthers.  Take note that this game will be played at Clarke Park as Foote field is unavailable.

Stallions rock the Seahawks, advance to 5 - 2

Friday night lights was the nickname of this past Stallions game.  It should've been called Friday night snoozer as the Seahawks failed to impress and lost 64 - 7 to the Stallions.  On the Stallions first possession they ran the ball down field and scored on a 3 yrd run by FB Ridley Chen.  On the 2nd Stallions possession the Stallions scored on a pass to SB Morgan Lidka for his 1st TD of 3 on the night.  On the insuing K.O., FB Omar Parchment stripped the Seahawks returned in the endzone and the ball was recovered by Rookie WR Yembeh Moiba.  This put the Stallions up 23 - 0 with only half the first quarter finished.

QB Travis Tyler went 11 / 12, 173 yrds passing and 4 TD's.  Plus Travis rushed for 54 more yards.  HB Manny Gordon carried the ball 10 times for 101 yards.  The Entire Stallions rushing game tallied 216 yards rushing and 2 TD's.  Rookie SB, Morgan Lidka caught 3 passes for 30 yards and 3 TD's. WR Coconut caught his first pass as a Stallion tallying 15 yards.

Defensively the Stallions were once again led by there captain Yuri Wishloff, who rallied the defence by recording 9 tackles, 4 tkls for loss and 1 INT for a TD.  DE Tim Siewert recored another QB sack.  In total the defence only 1 TD, had 3 INT's (1 for TD) and 1 sack.

Specials were great when they wern't committing penalties!  Mike Oakley returned a punt 85 yards for a major, and they recovered a fumble for a TD early in the first quarter.

The AFL has a Bye this weekend so we dont play again until Saturday August 8th.  Kickoff is at 1 PM in Lloydminster with HUGE playoff implications on the line.  The Stallions can finish as high in the standings as 1st and as low as 4th.

Storm cuts game short, but Stallions still victorious

Saturday night was one of the most intense storms to hit the Capital region this year, but not even mother nature could stop the Stallions as they beat the Panthers 9 - 6.  The game started off slowely for the Stallions as Penalties was there main opponent.  For the first 6 minutes of the first quarter the Stallions found it extremely tough to move the ball against a stingy Panthers defence.  Then the rain and Lightning came.  The game was post poned for 45 minutes.

Once the referee called the game back on, it was the Stallions ball.  And adjustments made allowed the offence to start moving the ball.  The Panthers scored first on a 1 yrd score by there FB but missed the convert.  But the Stallions did answer with a consistant barrage of medium and long passes by QB Travis Tyler, plus a solid running game by HB Manny Gordon.  The Stallions scored on a 20 yard pass by Tyler to WR Ryan "Lanke" Batchelor, making the score 7 - 6.  Midway thru the 2nd the Stallions defence forced the Panthers to punt from there own endzone, and the Panthers chose to conceid the 2 pt safety.  This gave the Stallions a 9 - 6 lead.

With no halftime and the next storm closing in on the field the third quarter was as exciting as the 2nd.  The Stallions went directly into the wind for the third, thus making a passing game almost non exsistant.  But the Stallions running game moved the ball.  HB Manny Gordon moved the ball and rushed for close to 60 yards thru 3 quarters, thou the stats arent in yet.

And, unfortunately, with 3:51 to play in the 3rd quarter the Referee called the game and the clouds opened up a minute later.  A close game made even closer due to the weather that these 2 teams had to play thru.  Up next for the 4 - 2 Stallions are the 0 - 6 Seahawks Friday night at Foote field.  Kickoff at 7 pm

Stallions back on the winning track

Every season a team needs there Defence to win a big game.  Last night the call was made to the Defence, and they answered, shutting down one of the most explosive passing teams in the League.  The Stallions defence kept the Drillers receivers quiet all evening and denied any sort of running game which resulted in a 28 - 15 Stallions victory.

The pressure got to teh Drillers with the Stallions recording 8 sacks, 3 by LB Yuri Wishloff.  The secondary had 5 INT's all game, 2 which were run back for TD's.  One was by FS Rio Wells and the other was by DB Ray Natress.  Rio's was for a 35 yard score while Ray's was for 70 yards.

The Offense was able to move the ball against the Drillers defence, sustaining 4 long drives. But were unable to score once in the red zone, resulting in 4 FG by kicker Brad Matheson; who was solid all night going 4 / 4 on FG, 2 / 2 on XP and punted extremely well.

Up next for the 3 - 2 Stallions are the 3 - 2 Panthers this Saturday.

Stallions defeated in close game against Pack

Saturday night the Stallions rolled into Calgary to battle the 2008 National Champs in what was a very low scoring affair.  The Pack opened the scoring on their first posession and unfortunately never looked back from there.  Even thou the Stallions efforts made the final score 24 - 21.

A lack of depth, stupid penalties and injuries were the Stallions problems.  5 minutes into the 3rd quarter QB Travis Tyler went down with a head injury.  Although he did return late in the 4th quarter there were other injured players that didnt return.  On a good note the Stallions run game managed to rack up 198 yards and 2 TD's on the ground against the Wolfpack.

The Stallions will enjoy a well needed bye week and return for action Saturday July 11th against the 1st place Drillers.

Stallions lose to Vandals in Mud bowl!

The Father's day matchup ended in the Edmonton Stallions first loss of the 2009 season.
In what turned out to be a mudbowl the Stallions lost 14-0.
The defense gave up the first TD on a 53 yd reception but held strong for the rest of the game not conceding anymore points. The game's only other TD came from an interception return by the Vandals defense.

The offence sputtered however the defence was strong, led by DE Tim Siewert.  Siewert finished the game with 4 solo, 2 assisted tackles, and 2 sacks.  LB Yuri Wishloff was all over the field tallying 9 tackles.  The defence totalled 3 INT's, 1 FR and 4 sacks.

Next up for the Stallions are the 1-2 Calgary Wolfpack this Saturday at McMahon stadium.

Stallions roll thru Red Deer
The Edmonton Stallions in their second game of the 2009 season defeated the Red Deer Buccaneers Saturday night by a score of 48 - 13.

The Stallions offense came into their own on Saturday, led by former Vanier Cup Champion Travis Tyler. The offensive line provided Travis with more than enough time to find the open receivers and opened holes for the running backs.
The Stallions defense held the Buccaneers to very minimal gains however the majority of the Bucs yards gained were c/o the 100+ yards worth of penalties against the Stallions.

We were happy to welcome to the lineup, JR Larose (former Edmonton Eskimo). He made an immediate impact at the Free Safety position.

Every player on the team contributed to the victory however player of the game honours goes to cornerback Grant Shaw who had a game high three interceptions but also contributed on offense with 2 catches for 140 yards and 2 TD's.

Full stats will be posted on our website by Monday June 15.
Our next game is in Lloydminster on Sunday, June 21 at 3pm.

Stallions defeat Gators in season opener, but with a cost

Last night the Stallions hosted the Gators in there 2009 Season opener infront of a decent crowd at Foote field.  The visitors travelled well and kept the game close but in the end the Stallions prevailed 27 - 10.

Opening the scoring for the Stallions was Rookie SB Ray Natress.  Ray returned a punt early in the 1st quarter 90 yards for a TD.  Later in the 1st quarter K Brad Matheson his a FG making the score 10 - 0.  The Gators managed to kick a FG making it 10 - 3.

However Special teams were the difference as Ray Natress led all Stallions returners with over 150 yards and a TD thru the entire game.  Midway thru the 3rd the Stallions kick another FG; later the Stallions had a rare bad moment on there Specials as the snap on a attempted punt deep in the Stallions end managed to go over Brads head and the Gators recovered it on the Stallions 3.  They did manage to score there only TD.

Near the end of the 3rd quater a scary moment, when Stallions QB Willie King was hit from behind while he was scramblling from the Gators pressure and took a severe hit from behind.  After countless minutes of Willie lying on the field near motionless, he was carried off the field.  Minutes later a Ambulance took Willie to the U of A hospital.  2nd string QB Travis Tyler took over the offence and lead the Stallions on some successful drives thru the 4th quarter, including rushing TD's from FB Ridley Chen (1 yrd) and HB Yemi Adeniyi (30 yrds).

Defensively the Stallions shutdown the Gators, which was led by CB Grant Shaw 3 INT's. Grant actually had 4 but it was called back on a defensive penalty.  DE Tim Siewert had 1 QB sack.

As of this morning Willie is awaiting surgery for his dislocated hip at the U of A hospital.  Up next for the Stallions are the Red Deer Buccaneers next Saturday night at Great Chief park in Red Deer.  Kickoff is 6 PM.
