Wednesday, February 27Umpires
Interested in umpiring?
Requirements
Open to girls and boys age 12 and up. All candidates must take an umpire's clinic.
Umpire Clinics
For you "new" umpires, this will require a clinic, and for you “seasoned” umps you too, a clinic is required.
There are two clinics available for the SSWRMSA umpires, but neither is in the South Surrey/White Rock area this year. The next available clinics:
Held on: Saturday, March 15, 2008
Held at: Green Timbers Elementary School, 88th Ave. and 148th Street, Surrey, B.C.
- Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. and the clinic commences at 8:30 a.m.
- Soft runners, pack a lunch, and it should wind up about 4:30.
- This will be a full day, probably most appropriate for umpires that have worked a season or two.
Clinic B
Held on: Saturday, March 29, 2008 AND Sunday March 30, 2008
Held at: Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, 6151 – 180th Street, Surrey, B.C.
- Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. and the clinic commences at 8:30 a.m.
- Soft runners, pack a lunch, Saturday should wind up about 4:00 p.m. and Sunday about 2:30 p.m.
- This is a two-day clinic, most appropriate to those new to umpiring.
As you can see, both clinics start fairly early and the closer to 8:00 a.m. you arrive the easier the registration process is – my recommendation, be there as close to 8 a.m. as you can.
Both clinics offer an excellent opportunity to get involved with very seasoned clinicians (a number of senior umpires). Phone a friend or a teammate and make an event of it. The one-day clinic on March 15th is probably better suited for returning umpires, but if this is the only day available to you it would be perfectly acceptable to attend this clinic. There will definitely be a number of new umpires from other associations there as well. The two-day clinic on March 29/30 will probably be not as rushed or condensed, but probably a larger group. Both clinics will have some classroom presentations, and gym drills (and yes, even the senior umpires do “drills” at the beginning of every season – it’s comparable to “hitting off the tee”). At the end of the day an exam will follow. Don’t worry about the exam, it’s done in a group setting and learning is the desired result.
