Welcome to the Somerset Senior Girls Softball League web site. The 2009 season will be our 34th year of offering competitive fastpitch softball for young ladies between the ages of 13-18. What started out as a 3 team league with no "home field" has devolped into an 7 team league with a state of the art 3 field complex. In addition to the league teams we support 4 travel teams; 1 at the 14-u level , 1 at the 16-u level and 2 at the 18-u level. We also support a 19-over womens team. We are a league that never turns away any girl who has a desire to play organized softball. Over the 34 years that the league has been in existence we have watched womens softball develop into a major sport.
Flash back to 1975 when Gordan and Sandy Brunt moved from the midwest to Somerset along with thier two daughters. As both girls were invovled in softball, in the midwest, one of thier concerns was if Somerset had a summer softball league. Not knowing if there was a league Gordan made a promise to his daughters that if there was not a softball league in town he would start one. A promise he kept.
Along with his new neighbors; Kathy Sullivan, Del and Richard Blais and Barbara Sowden he formed the first ASA Junior Olympic Softball league in Somerset. Looking back to those days: there were no aluminum bats - yes the ladies used wooden bats, and no womens gloves, no dazzle type uniforms and no softball shorts either and the hockey style catchers mask would not make an appearance for another 20 years. I bet that more than half the girls showed up at that first tryout with a borrowed glove and a wooden bat that probably weighed more than they did. Their first uniforms were their father's and brother's dyed t-shirts.
One thing is for sure over the last 34 years we have had many dedicated volunteers who have kept this league running, but mostly we have a lot of dedicated young ladies who have a lot of fun playing softball with their friends and making new ones along the way.
We have added somethng new at the complex; a 2nd floor on the exsisting clubhouse. Finally the league will have a place where we can hold our monthly meetings . Through the efforts of the President of the league and a few other volunteers the league was able to raise the money to complete the long overdue addition. Stop by and check it out if you have a chance.
Once again, Welcome to the Somerset Senior Girls Softball League 2009 season.
