San Rafael Little League: Umpires

General Information  SRLL employs boys and girls as well as adults as umpires of Little League games.  This is a great opportunity for young people who know and love the game to gain valuable experience in their first paying job.

SRLL youth umpires are compensated for their services and are expected to approach their role in a professional manner.  They are expected to arrive at the field at least a half hour before the scheduled game time and uphold the rules of Little League baseball before and during the game.  This is a fun and important role in our league and should be taken very seriously.

We utilize umpires in the Upper Rookie, Minors, Majors and Juniors divisions.  Upper Rookies uses two field umpires.  The other divisions use one field umpire and one plate umpire.

Eligibility, Training and Requirements   Umpires must be at least 10 years of age.  First time umpires will only work Upper Rookie games.  Umpires with previous experience can umpire other divisions based on their age and playing level, provided that an umpire must work 5 games as a field umpire in a particular division before serving as a plate umpire in that division.  Umpires may only ump games in divisions below where they play.  For example, Majors players can only umpire Minor and Upper Rookie games.  Minor players can only umpire Upper Rookie games.  Non-players can umpire games based on their age and ability.

Both new and returning umpires are required to attend rules and field training run by the district.  Rules training now takes one night in San Rafael (joining just Dixie/TL umpires in training) while field training consists of a half day (with southern Marin).  Dates are determined by the district and will be posted on SRLL website when known (see Important Date section).  If the umpire in training cannot attend both training dates, then he/she will be required to pass a written exam before being allowed to umpire.  There will be one field training make up date run by SRLL if needed.  Umpires must attend the field training.  These requirements apply to all new and returning umpires.

Umpires must have a thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of LL Baseball.  Failure to do so can compromise the game and their eligibility to umpire future games.

Scheduling umpires for hundreds of games in a season is a big undertaking. Therefore, umpires are required to work the games they are scheduled.  Failure to show up for games may lead to the forfeiting of umpiring duties for future games.

Umpires get paid!  Field umpires earn $15 per game, while plate umpires earn $25 at the Upper Rookie, Minors and Majors level.  Juniors' umpires earn more and is set by the District.

If you are interested in attending the umpire training, please email Ken Reich, the Umpire Coordinator, at srllumpire@gmail.com.  Plan on attending the both trainings.

Once the 2013 Umpire Schedule is created, it will be found in the downloads and handouts section.
