Thaddius Lowry signs letter of intent

With the baseball season set to start soon, at least one Spring senior begins the year with big expectations and a bright future.

Senior Thaddius Lowry signed a letter of intent to Texas Tech University. A third-year varsity player, Lowry committed to Texas Tech as a right-handed pitcher, but also plays catcher and some first baseman for the Lions, coach Kyle Humphreys said.

Humphreys said his team this season will play a lot of small ball, but Lowry is capable of providing power to the middle of a lineup which will need it. He said Lowry was an All-District player as a sophomore and he praised the senior for putting in the work during the offseason, bulking up at Tomball Sports Medicine.

“He was real inconsistent in terms of swinging at the right pitches. But he’s improved a lot this year and he’s got a lot of power,” Humphreys said.

However, it’s perhaps Lowry’s pitching where he provides the most value to Spring as one of the team’s two key starters, Humphreys said. A 6’4”, 220-pound righty, Lowry has a fastball which has grown from the 88-90-mile-per-hour range last year to as high as 94 this season. He also throws a slider and a split finger pitch to confuse opposing batters, the coach said.

“He didn’t start as much as we thought he would last season, but he’s really improving,” he said.

With new additions and growth to District 13-5A, Humphreys said there will be more weeks this season with three games instead of two. Additional games will require starting pitchers to throw more pitches and try to not get into deep counts with each batter, Humphreys said.

Recruited for his pitching talent, the coach believe Lowry could potentially be drafted in the MLB draft next year as well. He praised Lowry’s size, strength, intelligence and work ethic. He said he has been contacted by scouts, but couldn’t predict what round he could be drafted.

If he were drafted, Lowry would be the second Spring player picked in as many years. 2011 graduate and RHP Jeremy Kivel was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th round last year, 322nd overall.
