November 2, 2003 -- The nationally top-ranked Kane County Eagles ended their first season in the North American Football League undefeated at 16-0 by edging the Eastside Hawks, 24-17, in the 2003 NAFL Championship Game Saturday at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.

Kane County was one of many teams who left the Mid-Continental Football League and finished their NAFL debut season as the 2003 Eastern Conference champion. The Hawks (14-3), already champion of the Northwest Football League, won the 2003 NAFL Western Conference title.

The Eagles took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Clemons, who was named Championship Game Most Valuable Player, to wide receiver Curtis Gordon, and a field goal by Peter Cebulka.

They extended the lead to 17-0 with 12 seconds left until halftime on a pass from Clemons to wide receiver Mark Watson.

Eastside rallied for 17 unanswered points in the third quarter behind a touchdown run by wide receiver Derek Williams, a touchdown pass from quarterback Lance Westendorf to wide receiver Jakoba Squares, and a field goal by Craig Hawley, who was named Special Teams MVP.

But, with 1:29 left to play in the game, running back Leroy McFadden, named Offensive MVP, ran in a score from three yards out to win the championship.

Eastside wide receiver Julian Williams was also named Defensive MVP of the game.

- The East All-Stars edged the West All-Stars, 21-16, in the 2003 NAFL All-Star Game, played at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex prior to the Championship Game. Quarterback Scott Perrone of the Asheville Grizzlies and Courtez Oliver of the Chapin Timberwolves were named co-Most Valuable Players of the game.

- November 13, 2004 was announced as the date for the 2004 NAFL Championship Game, to be tentatively played at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.

Rifles Unveil New Logo!

OUR NEW LOGO!

As you likely noticed at the top of this page, the Rifles have a new logo, which you will be seeing around Springfield a lot this season!

The new logo was designed by Steve Krone, Senior Art Director at The TEAM, a local advertising agency that began a partnership with the Rifles during the 2002 season. With the nearby Wilson's Creek National Battlefield creating a strong connection to the Civil War for our area, the Union/Confederate theme for the new logo was chosen. The Rifles Silver and Navy Blue team colors also lent themselves well to the theme.

Our thanks go out to Steve, Jim Grundy, Craig Funk, and the whole crew at The TEAM that are helping to make YOUR Rifles look even better!
