RESOURCE GUIDE MONTHLY TIPS – OCTOBER 2009
NOT "JUST FOR SEEING THE BOARD"
It has been said that eighty percent of the information we take in comes to us through the visual system, and it's possible that, in a fast sport like ice hockey, it's even more than eighty percent, especially during the acts of shooting, making a defensive move, or making a save. Unless you have the very best information your eyes can obtain, your performance could be less than your best.
Many youth hockey players wear optical corrections while in school, but not while competing on the ice. If your child needs an optical correction, and thinks that it's "just for seeing the board at school," then it might be a good idea to rethink the matter. Ask your family eye care practitioner to help you be sure that the prescription is for seeing at distance (in other words, not just a "reading glass") and ask what your visual acuity is without the correction. So don't go out on the ice without making sure you're seeing the best you can. It can make a big difference.
Thanks to Robert A. Buonfiglio, O.D. and Gary G. Kalloch, R.D.O. of Eye On Performance - Saugus, MA (www.eyeonperformance.net) for the article and can be reached at (781) 231-1100 for further information.

GOALTENDING – REBOUNDS & RECOVERY
Goalies can get careless at practice, particularly if the drills aren’t designed with the goalies in mind. Two simple priorities should help the goalies get something out of every practice. First, notice where you are after each shot or situation. Adjust your positioning accordingly. And second, care about where you put the rebound. Even if there is no rebounder in the drill, care about where you put the puck. Otherwise, you will develop bad habits that will carry over into games.

USA Hockey H1N1 Update
USA Hockey, with the counsel of Dr. Michael Stuart, its chief medical officer, issued the following information regarding the H1N1 infection, including recommendations to reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection. USA Hockey Recommends:
Providing individual water bottles for players and not sharing water bottles. Regularly washing hands. Cleaning workout gear for each practice/competition. Keeping gloves on during the traditional handshake with opponents
Individuals with influenza may develop typical signs or symptoms, including: fever (102 degrees fahrenheit or greater), cough, muscle aches, runny nose, headache or sore threat, with the potential for more serious complications, including pneumonia. This year's influenza virus strain has particularly affected children and young adults.
Transmission of the influenza virus may occur from the day before the onset of symptoms and during the five-to-seven days that the symptoms are present. Infected individuals should stay home until signs and symptoms have resolved, with no fever present for at least 24 hours. The 24-hour no-fever timeline should be achieved naturally, without the aid of fever reducing medications.
Additional information regarding H1N1 is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
