Spokane South Little League: League News
Juniors Update
Dear SSLL Parents,
We’re gearing up for the Juniors season! Little League baseball on the South Hill does not end when a player reaches age 13 and can no longer play Majors. SSLL also has a Juniors division for players age 13 & 14 to continue to play until they move into high school baseball. As we have done in the past, SSLL forms 4 teams based around the two middle schools (Chase & Sacajawea) and two Catholic schools (All-Saints & Cataldo). Unlike the Majors, we do not have a draft in Junior’s but will form teams based on where a player will or currently goes to school, unless we get a request to consider having a player play on a different team because of team sizes or another hardship issue. Players who played Junior’s last year, can return to the team again if they so desire.
The Juniors season will begin right after school baseball is completed. This is usually in the last week of May after Memorial Day. We attempt to get in 14-18 games over the next 4-5 weeks before teams have to be formed for Juniors All-Stars. Some teams will have a practice or two during the week but that will depend on available fields and our playing schedule. We hope to be able to play two games at Avista Stadium as in the past but it totally depends on the Indians baseball schedule and other events.
We will have game versus the other South Hill teams, but also games against teams from West Plains, Riverview and Northwest Spokane. Travel to their Juniors fields will be required. This year, we may only have two available fields to play on. At the Juniors level, we play on 90 foot bases and 60 foot mounds, just like in high school and college.
Two years ago, the SSLL Juniors All-Star team took 2nd place in the State tournament, the best finish ever by a District 13 baseball team. This year, the District All-Star tournament and the Washington State All-Star tournament will be played in Medical Lake. This is a great opportunity for the SSLL Juniors team to win at District and not require the players and families to travel to the West Side to play. This may be the last time in many years that the State tournament will be held so close to home.
We must begin to get the teams formed as soon as possible. So, if you haven’t registered yet, please consider doing so now. Jeff Aaro has indicated he will return to manager the All-Saints team. Jeff Reynolds will be returning to manage the Cataldo team. Jay Kirkpatrick will manage the Chase team. We are still looking for someone to manage the Sacajawea team. It is possible we may merge the Chase and Sacajawea team which will be managed by Jay Kirkpatrick. What we do depends on how quickly parents register their players to play Juniors baseball.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me.
