Common Myths
There are many myths about commitments involved with travel soccer. Below are some of the frequently asked questions about travel soccer with the Springfield Fire:
Q. How much does it cost to belong to the Fire? A. The fee to belong to the Fire is just $25 a month, January through June ($150 total). This fee gets us 4-5 tournaments in the Spring, league fees, and ref fees. We have a team sponsor (Small Business Growth Corp.) that purchases team uniforms (two jerseys, two shorts, two socks, warm-ups and travel bags). That $25 also pays for one session of indoor and at least one indoor tournament during the winter. Parents are responsible for any hotel and gas cost that comes with the travel.
Q. How long does the travel soccer season last? A. Now that all of our players are on high school rosters during the Fall, the Fire's seasons include indoor soccer and training during the winter months (November through February) and then an outdoor Spring season from March through June.
Q. How many games do you play? A. We will play 15-20 indoor games in the winter, and 20-25 outdoor games in the spring.
Q. How many weekends are involved? A. In the Spring we will most likely play eight league games either on four different Sundays (doubleheaders) or tournament style (two on Sat. and two the next day on Sun.), and will go to 4-5 weekend tournaments. The winter will consist of 1 to 2 weekend tournaments and maybe a few indoor games.
Q. How far do you travel? A. League games are typically played in Central Illinois. Locations include: Bloomington, Peoria, Champaign, Morton, Springfield, Quincy, and Charleston. Tournaments are chosen each season, but in the past we have traveled to: Chicago, Peoria, Champaign, Rockford, Alton, Collinsville, Granite City, Belleville, Naperville, Quincy, and Edwardsville. We've also begun seeking some of the more high-powered tournaments in the Midwest in order to challenge our players. By doing so we've gone to Louisville, KY; Dayton, OH, Memphis, TN, Indianapolis, IN, South Bend, IN, St. Louis, MO and St. Charles, MO.
Q. How often do you practice? A. In most cases we practice twice a week. At times we will give the team a breather and just go once a week or even give the boys the entire week off. Our practices are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 - 7:00 at Centennial Park.
