Frequently Asked Questions about the Speedcats
When are Tryouts?
We usually have tryouts in early September for our Fall season and late March for our Spring season. Tryouts this year will be the week of September 9th.
When does the season start and end?
We typically begin practices right after tryouts, and the season usually begins in early October. Each team will play in some kind of league in the fall, and then play in 4-6 tournaments. The fall season ends after our tournament Dec.7-8th of this year.
Where are practices held?
We use gyms all over the city, but most of our practices will be held at South Eugene High for the 8th grade team. The other teams will practice where gyms are available in the fall, usually Jefferson Middle, Roosevelt and Spencer Butte.
What type of funds are needed and how are they raised?
The usual fee for the fall season in approximately $180-200. This fall season we have a great fundraiser that will allow the player to raise enough money for the entire year with a little hard work and hustle. The fees collected will pay for league fees, tournament fees, replacement uniforms and stipends for some of the coaches. Additional fees will be needed for travel expenses and these are borne by the parents. We make every effort to find the nicest and least expensive accomodations wherever we play.
Is there travel involved?
Yes. This fall our eighth grade team will play in a Portland league. Plus, all teams will play at least one tournament in the Medford area, Portland area and Seattle area.
This is necessitated by the small amount of tournaments in our area in the fall. Our tournament is the only one scheduled.
Who can play?
Our tryouts are open to all girls in the Eugene-Springfield area who are enrolled in the 8th grade and below for the 2002-2003 school year. We will have as many teams as we have competent coaches. We anticipate having at least two 8th grade teams and one 7th grade team, but we will have a 6th grade team if we have enough players. We try to have a team for every participant to play on, but sometimes we don't have enough coaches, so cuts are made.
